What are the best companies to go with?

Is it always a case that you have to have another "main" car insured and classic car is a second policy?

Can UK companies insure cars in Ireland, I Was talking to someone who has insured their classic car with Abbey autoline up north. He was of the impression (as with everything it seems) its very hard to get insured in Ireland one a classic car let alone get a good quote.

Yes -You always have to have another main car for daily driving for new classic business (Usually a yearly mileage limit applies)

UK companies - No

NI - yes, Autoline in particular are very good at covering where others don't but their underwriters are changing acceptable for new business so just becuase someone else got cover in the past doesn't mean you will. Ring them to find out. Once you get cover, keeping it renewed is very important.

Autoline's policies here are underwritten by Allianz Ireland - its not a UK issued policy. They were very flexible in the past, not so much now. You'll need to be 30 years of age with full use of another car for most policies. A lot of Japanese cars will also need to be 30 years of age. Most other stuff will get coverage from 20 years, although Autoline used to cover Porsches from 10 years of age - so criteria can change, and they do change - regularly.

Autoline policies are generally at market value now, even though their website says agreed value - so you'll need to stump up for a valuation if you want them to honour the value you provide in the event of a total loss. First Ireland are decent too - probably cheaper than Autoline - similar coverage criteria. I'm with Chubb, no mileage limit and agreed value too - which suits my stuff.

I dont have a main car. I will only need the insurance for a couple of months in any given year if even that.

My old man has a classic car policy with autoline and had two cars under this policy. One of those cars is sold now. Is there something that can be done in this regard for me to get covered?

What options do I have? Call Autoline, Chubb and First Ireland, I suppose. I was told by an insurance broker that FBD and Axa are the only ones in Ireland who deal with classic cars?

Then you need a standard policy - AXA are just about the only company covering cars over 15 years of age now I think. You also can't take out a policy for less than 12 months.

In relation to your dad - he can't insure a vehicle on his policy unless he owns it (or his spouse owns it) - and you generally can't be a named driver on a classic policy unless you have your own policy (to stop people fronting). So that's not going to be a way round this.

Well Chubb need a minimum of €40k coverage, so you’ll be well over that in an E30 M3. You can’t deal directly with them - Barrett’s in Dun Laoghaire are a broker for them.

Rang about 10 places, including Abbey Autoline, First Ireland, Carole Nash, FBD, Axa and some brokers.

I had to physically go into Axa as they dont do classic car quotes over the phone, waste of F'ing time.

The only progress I made was with Barretts, they said they would get back to me with a quote so I will see if anything eventuates from that.

Main reason for not quoting was it has to be a second policy, need to have a daily car policy and the next one would be that I have no no claims bonus, I've being abroad for quite a few years but have a full clean license. Im almost 40 years old and nobody will insure me on a **** car, This country is a joke.

Carole Nash (on an overall basis for vehicle one and two) have always been a good broker. Ageas underwrite my policies with them. My premium hasn't gone up on last renewal.

i got a quote for comprehensive cover for 2K driving per year for €350 from First Ireland.

hows that sound for value? Anyone dealt with First Ireland?

I've an '85 Toyota insured with Aviva thru Arachas (they took over O'Driscoll O'Neill who I was with previously). I picked up a 2002 2-door 1.6 Ford Focus with 28K miles recently. I chanced Arachas to see if I could add the Focus to my classic policy(some pain, almost 1 & half hours being passed around & being disconnected). Would not cover it. I know the car is probably too new & I'll put it into storage. When my current policy expires in May is there any company I should try?

We added a 2001 Mégane 1.6 to our FBD classic policy at the end of last summer. It took a while, several phone calls, but they accepted it in the end.
