How do people feel about this one? Will it be short and sweet?

They want a 7 day working roster so a shorter week will never happen, they can't fill the 5 day never mind the 7 day so can't see 7day happening.
There is a provision on one of the previous deals that we could be asked to work a Saturday? Thankfully it’s never been asked of us.
I know of lots of people working 4 day weeks or shorter days. They take a pro rata cut in pay though.
They take a pro rata cut in pay though.
The idea of a 4-day working week would be getting the same pay for 4 days work. Some of the trials suggest productivity remains the same or that the drop off in productivity is met by an increase in societal benefit. You can work a shorter week as things are through the SWY scheme but you will take a reduction in pay.
The reduced pay is often not as severe as people think as its at the higher rate of tax for most employees.
This. It's extremely prudent for people to get advice from salaries as to how much they will actually be down after moving to a 4 day week. But they also need to take into account potential impacts too.
The pension is a big implication.
Lots of job don't measure productivity so many will just do 80% of previous.
Annual leave will not be increasing - there was a deliberate effort to tighten up on it and cat at 30 days a while back
TBH we all need pay increases to deal with the reality of inflation, and annual leave and extra flexibility won't help pay the bills!
There is a widget now on the NSSO self-service site called "What If I Take"
You log in via NSSO self-service portal, input your details, and it will tell you what SWYS will cost you, based on your current earnings.
Note: To anyone thinking of applying for the SWYS on pro-rata pay basis for next year, the cut-off date is the end of next week.
I believe it is to be expanded in the future to also calculate shorter working weeks.
Just increase my base rate. I don't want anything else in the talks. Nows not the time for a 4 day working week or additional annual leave talk. Just help me pay my bills.
You may find that extra flexibility can reduce your bills. Especially when it comes to people with child minding responsibilities.
What about those who don't have kids, but still have to deal with inflation and the cost of living increases?
There are already flexible options available for parents.
Any increase needs to be a percentage of base rate, no dicking around with "flexibility" which will only benefit some, not all.
That's a great tool.
So for a 4day week I would only be down 87.5 euro.
Depends on what you plan to do for the day!
Absolutely. I easily make that during the week on a few bits I do on the side. So the plan would be to have the day to do my own bits.
I went down to a four day week so I could take care of my elderly mother's shopping and medical appointments, and eventually it became the day we used to visit her and take her out when she eventually had to go into nursing home care.
I was very glad of the opportunity to take it, though it does have an impact on service. Currently a four day week equates to 80% service.
Can anyone share at roughly what salary point dropping to a 4 day week becomes a lot more favourable in terms of reduced net income?
I’m taking one parental day every 2 weeks next year and works out about 2.4k off my annual wage, I think if your earning in the higher tax bracket it will benefit you more
Just did this too, if I went down to a 4 day week the amount I’d be down in pay for the year is just under 10% of my gross salary, I’m in the higher bracket
Anyone know when the talks are set to begin? When could a first increment be likely? I suppose there is still one due next week.
Increments are dependent on your start date and only last a certain number of years per grade.
The final pay restoration increase of the existing agreement is 1st Oct I think it’s 1.5%.
I'd say by the time it is ratified and voted on it will be early 2024 - first installment in March 2024 coud be possible something circa 2%
Sorry I meant increases.
October is good for me. Incremental and pay deal in the same month. Net is the same as everyone else but the Christmas timing works well
They need to look seriously at a 10 - 12% increase if they're to have any chance of recruiting and retaining the level and quality of worker the public service needs.
Broken record here but if they want to avoid another hack somewhere then ICT needs to be given a dedicated pay scale.
They won't be able to compete with industry. It should just be outsourced for critical stuff.
Which is a money pit. Plenty of people are happy enough to take the pay cut, for the balance and stability, but 50%+ is just too much.
Bring ICT out like engineers etc. It's an anachronism for them to be clerical staff
Yeah, that's what the HSE did.
I do agree they'll outsource rather than change anything though.
Yeah, I'm usually against outsourcing but i struggle to see the benefits of keeping it in house and I struggle to see the public sector retaining competent staff. I think keeping it in house is a bigger risk and also a money pit.
If you go for promotion to a higher grade do you think they would take the 5 day a week person over the 4, all else being equal of course?
Well personally I’d rather someone on a 4 day week than someone on 5 who then goes and takes an entire month off during the summer - which is very common in my business area, very few aren’t on a short working year so at least with the 4 day a week person you know exactly where you stand
