Hotel plans delayed by presence of bats Plans to develop a South East Galway hotel, destroyed by fire in 2011, are being delayed as planners are requesting a bat survey. And that has diluted expectations that the redevelopment of the Shannon Oaks Hotel in Portumna would commence this autumn. The property is owned by the billionaire Comer Brothers who have committed to reconstructing the hotel and have submitted a planning application to this effect. Is there any update on their plans for Eyre Square East?
From 2013:
Weren't some of the buildings listed making it difficult to proceed with the development.
This building which appears to have been part of the plan is for sale now so I'd say it's cancelled. Not sure though.

The Comers are a disgrace to Galway.
You said it, imagine being from Galway and buying Murtys, the Pucan and O'Connels for the sake of turning them into a shopping centre for your own pockets. Two absolute pricks, hope the house of cards fall at some point.
😮 hoorah for planning laws and planners, (even grudgingly?!).. otherwise Messrs Comer and similar ilk would be free to push their financial weight around to puff up their myopic egos.

Portumna's The Shannon Oaks saga has gone on for the past twelve years – but now the owners, the multi-millionaire Comer brothers, will be forced to pay a derelict site levy if they do not reopen or redevelop.
The fine will be just a drop in the ocean to them.
The town is an ideal tourist location with the Shannon right on its doorstep but tourists have no where to stay when they come to visit.
Its a pity Hayes didn't buy it instead, he at least might have done something with it.
Melodramatic much. Lots of AirBnB listings (I just looked). And not really that much to do: tour the workhouse, the castle and gardens. Play golf - sure you can do that anywhere. Boat trip on the river (yawn).
Mrs O'B calling someone else melodramatic is the most online "pot, kettle, black" thing I've read in ages.
Mark Twain said it better than I ever could.
Its a nice town. Forest park is fantastic and the town gets a lot of boating visitors who are travelling up and down the Shannon. The Hotel was a real bustling place any time I stopped there back in the 00's.
A real shame was not bought by the Hayes or Pat McDonagh. He has done well with the hotels he bought around that time like Castletroy and Charleville
Still unfinished, not even started.
It's not only Galway that the Comers are a disgrace to!

Worse argument Ive seen on here in a good while. (yawn)
Another great week for Galway's finest.

Absolute scumbags.
They're as big a surge on this county as the other ethnic minority.
Some info on the CGS site.
Playing the council at their own game, no better mentor for inaction.
We so badly badly need local Gov reform, its more obvious now than ever that its one of the big bottlenecks for development and innovation in the Country.
Good summary of the Comer's activities in this twitter thread. No regard for anything or anyone except themselves.
