So €35 per calf for meal feeding up to a max of 40 calves and €15 per calf for IBR testing up to a max of 20 calves.
No vaccinations or dung sampling.
Got results back from samples sent on aug 25th. 8 of 20 positive. Use to just vaccinate weanlings. Will be doing everything now.
Not good, were any of the 8 vaccinated as weanlings?
Signed up but i'm considering not doing the IBR, not sure yet, i'll have another think about it.
Bought a half tonne of organic nut the weekend (no minerals in it so will have to get the separately and get approval from the vet to use).
Eye watering. 880 a tonne collected in small bags and hard got.
IBR booked for next week.
The scheme will just about cover the cost of the nuts for my small few calves this year but sher tis a half tonne they weren’t going to get otherwise.
Look at it as free nuts and it’s more palatable then.
13 out of 20 positive here. Advised to just vaccinate the calves
Can I ask- were you having problems before now? If you didn't know about positives would you vaccinate? Just wondering is there IBR in every herd anyway? Would love to know what % of herds who test in this scheme turn up positives? ( Didn't join myself - just interested. See a lot of dairy herds vaccinating for multiple diseases. )
Is vaccinating for IBR basically vaccinating against pneumonia ?
It’s 1/2 of the pneumonia vaccine program. Bovipast is the other 1/2
When is the best time to vaccinate for IBR? I do it every Christmas on all stock and Lepto at the same time.
It would be better to do spring born calves earlier than that. Ideally before weaning or housing.
Calves must be 3months before giving the INR vaccine, ideal to give before weaning and housing
I went to apply online on Agfood.ie and it says that the closing date is now -
The closing date for receipt of a valid application is 23.59 on Tuesday 26th September 2023.
My vet thinks nearly every herd in the country has it at this stage.
IBR on its own isn’t a big deal, the problem is it’s a Trojan bourse for other things to get in.
I had suspicions. A few snotty noses but nothing really getting sick.
as vaccines go IBR is one of the cheaper ones so better to do it I suppose
What is the vaccine for ibr? Is it one dose or two?
Same as most other vaccines....Two doses starting off, and once a year after that.
Actually, it's one dose.. The other pneumonia vaccine is two
My Vet said IBR is in most herds too.
If you started vaccinating for IBR, giving a shot/booster every 6 months. When could you withdraw, would 4/5 shots be enough?
I vaccinate all my stores ( were mostly dairy cross until now) at or before housing. I do not vaccinate again before slaughter. Cattle are outside after that, and they are six months older.
I didn’t have any animals with IBR , just lucky I guess, I don’t buy in any stock, rear all my own.
Got results today. 11 out of 20 were haemolysed samples. So invalid. Not going to go to the bother now of redoing anything. Wonder will I get docked now.
Hardly your fault? Did you have the test on Friday and the vet was slow sending the samples to the lab maybe? (Not sure that would cause it).
I had the test today. Very efficient 30 minutes.
Wouldn't think so. Had an invalid genomic sample that had to be redone. The hair sample was invalid too. No penalty.
How long has it taken to get results back? Mine done 2 weeks now
Scheme about to close - 25 mins to deadline. I just applied there now. Last minute saloon and all that.
Me too, even though I had more or less decided not to apply. I don’t intend doing the IBR testing.
+1
got my results back , 16 positive out of 20 ,didn't speak with my vet yet but I never noticed anything wrong with these cows so presume it going to be widespread
got mine back, 1 positive out of the 20 which I was surprised by, I buy in a good few every year so expected more positives.
Vet is advising all clients to vaccinate, the one I have positive I bought in privately during the year a healthy 1st calver
Sure that’s what this is all about, vets advising farmers to buy expensive vaccines off them that they don’t need. IBR isn’t a problem in Suckler herds, the problem is in half starved dairy cattle that the country is polluted with now.
