Nothing wrong with having Renault involved if they are paying for advertisement etc....if RTE presenters are using that to fill their own pockets then it becomes an issue

Well more has already come out that no questions have been asked about in the committees. Example, Dermot Bannon, Lottie Ryan, Baz Ashmawy, Anna Geary, Carl Mullan, Doireann Garrihy and Hugh Wallace have all benefited from “ambassador” roles with car brands.
Here's Kathryn Thomas starting a new one with Peugeot just 3 weeks ago, having previously been associated with Audi (who dumped her over a penalty points issue)....
She's also a brand ambassador for Lupilu baby and toddler through Lidl

Agreed. If he had nothing to hide, no problem. The rush to return it though shows something could be amiss.
At the very least, the optics looks terrible and his statement about it being ad hoc was foolish.
He should have come out with a full statement declaring everything in detail including what tax was owed and if it was paid.

Really highlights the importance of letting your agent broker your deals, although we have seen that however the parent company “handles” the payments can wind you up in a mess entirely of their own making.
To be fair its a grey area. Marty is a paid public servant with RTE. He has obligations like all public or civil servants. I can't imagine a civil servant in the revenue commissioners for example doing gigs on the side and getting a loan of a car in return. They'd have to declare it.
Its only fair the same rules apply across the board. Public servants should not be getting substantial gifts or favours on the side, no matter what they do in return.
This needs tightening up by the new DG. RTE staffers need to decide if they are public servants or not.
Having RTE "stars" being associated with your brand must now be toxic.

I don’t think that’s the way it’s going- it’s simply RTÉ haven’t answered his original question- instead Marty was presented as the answer to a question that wasn’t asked.
If Marty has a tax liability no one is going to feel sorry for him but he doesn’t deserve to be hung out to dry- I imagine there’s a lot of RTÉ folk right now totting up what they may have to owe to revenue - I won’t feel sympathy for Marty but I won’t “condemn” him either- his punishment will be a hefty fine from revenue if he’s under declared or not declared- just like it would be for any of us -I imagine there will be many others in the same boat.
The list of “commercial arrangements” that RTÉ are now proposing is years overdue- anyone working in the corporate sector know full well the implications of not declaring interests and risk their careers for not disclosing- that for me is the bigger issue here - it’s the complete lack of governance in general in RTÉ
Agreed. The situation seems to be that if he'd been getting paid for appearances, he'd have to pay taxes on that. Instead he was given the loan of a car in an on-going ad-hoc agreement. Whether that constitutes a benefit-in-kind considering he's not an employee of Renault and there was no formal agreement, I have no idea. But at the very least it should be looked into and any money that should have been paid to Revenue should be paid.
I'd imagine there is a lot of "talent" consulting with their accountants at present!!
I want his travel and sub claims to be made public. If he was claiming for depreciation on a vehicle that he didn't have to upkeep himself that could be an awkward conversation. Also what vehicle was registered for his claims.
What was Martys salary? I can't believe that he wasn't charging for events in lieu of a poxy Renault.

He should receive a suspension of a couple months without pay, and get his tax affairs in order. As should anyone in RTE who has been found doing similar.

Is Marty a Rte employee or is he self employed doing contract work with RTE. Doesn't he also do work for GAA. Was the car 'loan' from work done with GAA and so nothing to do with RTE.

This is why you have to take what a politician says with a large pinch of salt. Blows with the wind..every day is a new day. Always said no need to spend big money producing dramas, just promote Oireachtas TV, best fictional drama in town and no additional production costs (far from free of course but it's a sunk cost so may as well get some actual benefit from the spend)
He is described in media at the moment as 'RTE staff' or 'employee', so seems like a direct employee.
Regardless though, RTE should have had a register of interests covering both.
In addition, RTÉ’s Interim Deputy Director General, Adrian Lynch said he has agreed with incoming Director General Kevin Bakhurst that the station will develop a register of interests for both staff and their contractors - starting first with its on-air presenters.
The fact, though, is that RTE is not part of the "Public Service", and it's not up to RTE staffers to decide if they're public servants or not.

As you can see RTE is not a part of this. Legally, RTE is a "statutory corporation", the same as the ESB, Ervia (formerly known as Bord Gáis Éireann) and An Bord Pleanála. Legally, they are specifically not part of the public service, despite people colloquially regarding them as "a public service".

Marty was/is also an MC at Bank of Ireland sponsored events which I believe he would be paid for. I think Marty would have an accountant and declaring this income as there’s a paper trail.

It's a valid point re charging VAT but some plumbers / electricians may not thank you for shining a light on their intermittent practice of not charging VAT for their services😂.
It would be very helpful and save an awful lot of time and effort.
As a permanent employee of RTE, Marty is possibly subject to the same rules as for civil servants. Here are the rules:

I said no such thing. The fault lies clearly, and only, with RTE. And in this case one of their own employees who “acted” on his own instead of using his agent, who should be consulted, and included, in any business agreements.
People just seem to really want it to be the fault of Ryan Tubridy and Noel Kelly Management when, really, how RTÉ want to pay their payments is no concern of theirs.
From the outset I said this was an RTÉ issue and it’s only become more of an RTÉ issue since.
The end user is whoever buys a car from Renault, they will pay VAT as a consumer. But for this transaction the VAT wouldn't be passed on through the VAT chain. Its purely a bookkeeping exercise.
That said, Marty should have submitted a VAT invoice to Renault for his services provided, not done it for "free" and received the loan of a car in lieu.

Ryan Tubridy knew what money he was getting from RTÉ and he knew what was being lauded to the public as a cut in his pay wasn’t true yet he let the public think he took a pay cut. That’s bad enough to be removed permanently in my view. There are plenty of people that can do his 1 hour a day in radio for a lot less of a fee, and Patrick Kielty is already taking over the Late Late Show so it’s only the Radio show that’s relative at this point.
