Marty was/is also an MC at Bank of Ireland sponsored events which I believe he would be paid for. I think Marty would have an accountant and declaring this income as there’s a paper trail.
I don’t think Marty is the person being discussed at the committee the other day.

The fact, though, is that RTE is not part of the "Public Service", and it's not up to RTE staffers to decide if they're public servants or not.

As you can see RTE is not a part of this. Legally, RTE is a "statutory corporation", the same as the ESB, Ervia (formerly known as Bord Gáis Éireann) and An Bord Pleanála. Legally, they are specifically not part of the public service, despite people colloquially regarding them as "a public service".
He is described in media at the moment as 'RTE staff' or 'employee', so seems like a direct employee.
Regardless though, RTE should have had a register of interests covering both.
In addition, RTÉ’s Interim Deputy Director General, Adrian Lynch said he has agreed with incoming Director General Kevin Bakhurst that the station will develop a register of interests for both staff and their contractors - starting first with its on-air presenters.
This is why you have to take what a politician says with a large pinch of salt. Blows with the wind..every day is a new day. Always said no need to spend big money producing dramas, just promote Oireachtas TV, best fictional drama in town and no additional production costs (far from free of course but it's a sunk cost so may as well get some actual benefit from the spend)
Is Marty a Rte employee or is he self employed doing contract work with RTE. Doesn't he also do work for GAA. Was the car 'loan' from work done with GAA and so nothing to do with RTE.
I understand that this car arrangement is something which needs to be sorted tax wise, but that's separate issue. Or am I completely wrong
He should receive a suspension of a couple months without pay, and get his tax affairs in order. As should anyone in RTE who has been found doing similar.

I want his travel and sub claims to be made public. If he was claiming for depreciation on a vehicle that he didn't have to upkeep himself that could be an awkward conversation. Also what vehicle was registered for his claims.

Agreed. The situation seems to be that if he'd been getting paid for appearances, he'd have to pay taxes on that. Instead he was given the loan of a car in an on-going ad-hoc agreement. Whether that constitutes a benefit-in-kind considering he's not an employee of Renault and there was no formal agreement, I have no idea. But at the very least it should be looked into and any money that should have been paid to Revenue should be paid.
I don’t think that’s the way it’s going- it’s simply RTÉ haven’t answered his original question- instead Marty was presented as the answer to a question that wasn’t asked.
If Marty has a tax liability no one is going to feel sorry for him but he doesn’t deserve to be hung out to dry- I imagine there’s a lot of RTÉ folk right now totting up what they may have to owe to revenue - I won’t feel sympathy for Marty but I won’t “condemn” him either- his punishment will be a hefty fine from revenue if he’s under declared or not declared- just like it would be for any of us -I imagine there will be many others in the same boat.

To be fair its a grey area. Marty is a paid public servant with RTE. He has obligations like all public or civil servants. I can't imagine a civil servant in the revenue commissioners for example doing gigs on the side and getting a loan of a car in return. They'd have to declare it.
Its only fair the same rules apply across the board. Public servants should not be getting substantial gifts or favours on the side, no matter what they do in return.
This needs tightening up by the new DG. RTE staffers need to decide if they are public servants or not.

Really highlights the importance of letting your agent broker your deals, although we have seen that however the parent company “handles” the payments can wind you up in a mess entirely of their own making.

Agreed. If he had nothing to hide, no problem. The rush to return it though shows something could be amiss.
At the very least, the optics looks terrible and his statement about it being ad hoc was foolish.
He should have come out with a full statement declaring everything in detail including what tax was owed and if it was paid.
IMO, The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show is very very stale. But it's not a like-for-like comparison anyway. Tubs would fit better at Newstalk.
Well more has already come out that no questions have been asked about in the committees. Example, Dermot Bannon, Lottie Ryan, Baz Ashmawy, Anna Geary, Carl Mullan, Doireann Garrihy and Hugh Wallace have all benefited from “ambassador” roles with car brands.
Here's Kathryn Thomas starting a new one with Peugeot just 3 weeks ago, having previously been associated with Audi (who dumped her over a penalty points issue)....

There isn't necessarily anything wrong with all of this - But the questions should have been asked by now.
BMW to Renault? That's a punishment in itself.
Nothing wrong with having Renault involved if they are paying for advertisement etc....if RTE presenters are using that to fill their own pockets then it becomes an issue
He was a brand ambassador for BMW prior to this Renault deal so he knew exactly how this worked.
So the "oh he didn't know" is rubbish.
It was Marty himself who released the statement, and given that Sen.Dooley is saying he wasn't referring to Marty with his questions (as it seems to have been more about someone receiving a car allowance even though they don't drive and don't have a licence which is not what happened with Marty) and that with the amount of documents RTE are likely to have to provide which will be reviewed by the committees it's unlikely RTE are going to be able to protect someone else (and would be getting themselves deeper in the sh*t by doing so), I'd say the whole thing likely does relate to someone else. Marty was just coming forward with something that he should have been declaring. He also said he returned the car about 2 weeks ago and made RTE aware of it, but the Interim DG said the situation Dooley was referring to, that person had only returned the car the day before.
RTE might have to look at limits on time for sponsorship. Think Renault became part of the furniture and obviously way too pally with everyone.Lines have been crossed
Both RTE and RT have been found to use back door accounts to funnel tax payer money out to RT while declaring to the public a different story.
Since then the information been released is getting worse and worse.
Marty has clearly been pulling a fast one and got caught. He fired out a little statement with no answers so yes people have questions and based on the information from RTE so far and the trickle of issues, it fair to say that most people think that Marty wasn't exactly declaring correctly what he was up to. The statement itself ended up with more questions than answers.
Unless the public stay on top of this it will be pushed under the carpet and everyone will move on with no change in RTE. No it's not Best to just let it flow, and relax"
As a tax payer I wants answers in regards to what is going on and what reform is been made to stop it again. Any tax payer I have talked to have demanded the same
If RT or anyone else then wants to move on from RTE, best of luck to them and I hope they get exactly what they deserve to earn in whichever job they get
How aware Marty was or wasn't will not wash withe revenue.
If Marty has the use of a car in lieu of payment for MCing at events , then Marty has a tax liability.
Ignorance of the law isn't a defence.
Go try it yourself - go for a spin in your car after a few drinks, keep doing it until you get pulled over and tell the judge you didn't know it was an offence to drive under the influence of alcohol. Let us know how you get on.
If you have side deals, the onus is on you to ensure you're tax complaint.
We're now up to €300,543 costs that RTE incurred in order to make €150k payment to Ryan Tubridy. However, this excludes RTE staff time, producer and assistants etc. Probably closer to €350k.
