What do you not understand? Of course they did. It's generally elderly motorists who become confused with the way a motorway works.
It's been known to happen at full GSJs too. There's a reason that the wrong way, turn back signs exist.

The most worrying thing is, these are the people we share the roads with.
It's not just elderly motorists. I posted before about meeting a young one coming towards me on the slip road from the M17 to the M6(East) . She had taken the Dublin bound left lane but wanted the Galway one, so did a U turn on the slip road, drove towards me, and right in front of me swung round onto the Galway slip road.
Now that this road is open fully, how much time does it actually save, from East to Westprot.
Yes it's just that I don't understand how someone ends up feeling attracted to the RIGHT hand side of a solid white line, if you get me. I fully understand them taking the wrong exit at a roundabout and carrying on down an "off" slip by mistake, but the above described one just seems mad to me!
Depends on the time of day as at night I'd say you save damn all. But when ever there is traffic jams on the old Castlebar ring road you would save a decent bit. I have at times been stuck on that ring road for ages other times I just drove straight through. So yea how long is a piece of string.
I don't see as many traffic jams on the ring road now. Rarely see traffic backed up to McHale park now.
HI Mark , I took a look at it in google maps ,
the road isn't calculating correctly for the new road yet ,
the Ring road of Castlebar saves 3 minutes as it is.
I know that from the north of Westport ( Newport road ) to the east of Westport ( N5 road ) could take up to half an hour at certain times of the day .
I drove it from end to end over the weekend and it took 24 min aprox so it would save another 4 min off the journey .

Oddly enough google maps tells me it's a minute quicker taking the old route from the east of Castlebar the centre of Westport.
Am wondering is Google maps not calculating it properly. I drove it this weekend and it kept trying to bring me on the old road off it.
I would say it will take the algorithm a while to calculate it all out.
I drove it on Sunday and it knows about the part that opened early but is only partially aware of the second section. My guess is that it updates itself automatically based on a certain number of users traversing all the different paths on and off. At some point, the amount of new information will settle down and maybe after a quick review by a human, it can go live.

Signage very poor. First exit to Castlebar take you down back roads miles from the town. Went back on and next exit to Castlebar much closer to the town and on a good urban road.
Yes, I was expecting to see signs for Leenane and Louisburgh at the first Westport exit, but didn't see any. There was a brown tourist sign for Croagh Patrick though.

Some fair points raised here by a cycling lobby group. It is a joke that an underpass was put in at Attireesh - directly as a result of a planning condition from An Bord Pleanala - but wasn't connected to anything so is now unused. The underpass would likely have cost a couple of hundred grand.

I'm predominantly a motorist but I have to say it's your own comments that are harking back to the stone age. We live in an age of active travel and climate responsibility and cyclists have every right to share roads and preferably separate tracks where possible. The us and them attitude needs to change. We are all part of the transport system.
A lot of cyclists also have cars and are paying tax anyway. Even for motorists who never cycle it's better to accommodate cyclists safely and separately where possible.
This is for a greenway that is segregated from the road entirely? Not sure what your point is.
This is the underpass. There is a ramp to access it from the south side, but on the northern side it just ends in a field.
The reason why it goes nowhere is because the landowner won't sell up. I guess it will be CPO'd eventually. It'll connect up to the greenway in Attireesh fine but that ramp down from the road with the 90 degree corner into the tunnel is a pretty bad design and I doubt it'll be used much. Would've been better to just have a controlled crossing on the road near to the roundabout.
Not sure if you've found out anything on this since. I was on both roads this week. The new road is 100km/hr all the way. It doesn't drop down even approaching roundabouts- is this normal for primary routes?
The old road is 80 km/hr almost all the way apart from a localised area near Islandeady school. There's a 100km/hr sign here at the turnoff for Islandeady village where there is ongoing controversy over replacing the stone wall. It doesn't make sense having it 100 there though where the road isn't that safe so I'm thinking it will be replaced with 80 signs soon.

I've assumed your information about the 80 limits to apply only to the newest sections downgraded to R309. But I can also see that OSM still has The R309 on both approaches to Castlebar at 100km/h. I'm guessing that both sections were marked down to 80 when the Castlebar Bypass section was opened. Can you confirm?

Its been confirmed here it will be reduced to 80kmh.
Part of the N59 section is already an accident black spot apparently.
What's the issue? Article doesn't mention it. Blind spots?
