I know of cyclists who don't use cycle paths full stop because they feel they get held up by other, slower moving cyclists. My own view is that, at locations where cycle paths are in place, it should be illegal to cycle on the road.
Good luck securing any convictions with that. The state some cycle paths are in, any half decent solicitor can get you off.
Alot of stuff is illegal but uinless someone made an example of, is pointless
God forbid they open it in time for a busy bank holiday weekend.
Although, maybe that's precisely why they're not opening it this weekend?
So is the road ready to be opened? And with the fine weather they’re not opening it for the June bank holiday weekend? Could be bad accidents on the old N5.
Can we change thread title to the official open date
Beautiful shot from upintheeire on Instagram.

Opening time is 1:00 PM on the 15th of June.
june?
It's June yes
Just putting these up for posterity. Courtesy of Mayo County Council.
Good video showing all the major structures on the route. Everything looks done, just as well considering it's opening in 2 days!
Drove the Castlebar section yesterday. Lovely piece of road! Is it a 2+2 or a DC?
Suppose there not much more life in this thread. Thanks all for the cool pics and the interesting info
Is tomorrow the full opening as in all works fully completed and contractors off the site, or will there still be bits of snagging and tidying up continuing over the summer?
Usually the bulk of the snagging will be complete prior to opening.
Just thinking on a previous job I worked on, we opened the road in October, and I was still there until December sorting as-builts, monitoring and small remaining snags on local roads and access tracks. By the end it was me, a foreman and a team of 5 workers.
The Christmas party was me and the foreman on the rip, as the workers flew home for Christmas.
I'd say the contractor will still be there to a lesser extent for another few months at least.
Still bits of the Greenway to tidy up. Signs up saying tomorrow at 1pm it's fully open.
Small bit on the RTE website about it, as usual giving column inches to the whingers rather than the benefits this will bring. Doesn't surprise me at all anymore.

What time did the ribbon get cut at?
Seems like a disproportionate amount of inches given to complaints alright. The contractor will see out all the contract items I'm sure. It's enough for the local papers to be highlighting local concerns IMO.
It's a day to be positive with a wonderful piece of infrastructure in place for West Mayo and Mayo as a whole. Hopefully the roads to and around Ballina will get the upgrades they need before too long.
scheduled for 10am
Pat Mc Grath giving space to the "major" controversy surrounding "The Great Wall of Islandeady" in the context of the overall project, is pathetic. (Words in quotes are mine).
The road is up on OSM now. On the closer-in layers for the moment.
Cheers. I see it's active on google maps too although streetview level option isn't on it yet of course. We will have to wait for the google camera car to do its stuff.
Travelled the road around an hour ago. Fantastic bit if infrastructure, should have been done years ago, it will transform the area for the better.
He'll be knocking Teresa Mannion's weather updates off the top spot for dramatic West of Ireland news at this rate.
What the hell is with a roundabout halfway down the road. Why didn't they do a flyover with entrance and exits?
I thought it a curious decision too. I remember reading in the design report that it was due to the high traffic levels coming to that side of Castlebar from the (now old) N5. But surely the vast majority of this traffic will now be using the new road?
Strange, I don't see it on google maps yet.
I stand corrected. It has the Castlebar bypass part active but not the rest of the road to Westport. Apologies.
Traffic volumes don't justify flyovers at that particular location.
