Eligible for Electricity Credit?

    A friend received the keys to their new home (a second hand house) on Friday 24th February. They moved out of family home so did not already have their name on any energy bills up to that point. They joined Electric Ireland as a new customer on the morning of Saturday 25th February and received the first bill this week with a billing period of 25th Feb to 12th April.

    They did not receive a government electricity credit.

    Electric Ireland say they're not entitled to one as the previous owner got the third credit and my friend should have received it from their own previous supplier - but as a totally new customer to the market they didn't have one.

    Citizens Information website states that "the supplier you were with on 27th February 2023 is responsible for giving you the third credit". But this is under the heading "Switching Suppliers" which doesn't strictly apply.

    Should he be eligible for the third credit?

    Yeah. The other person getting the credit from them is irrelevant.

    Need to chase it up with ei or cru possibly

    they most likely joined online with the actual account being processed on Mon 27th with previous owner getting the credit as it possibly credited at 00.01am and new owner registered at 9.30am on 27th.

    A quick email from your solicitor to sellers solicitor will probably sort it. But as most companies operate Mon to Fri its just a crap timing issue and you canlt exactly point the finger at EI.

    Seller should do the right thing and refund you the €200 they got

    But the billing period on the bill is from 25th February. And the starting meter reading is from the morning of the 25th. If he's paying for electricity used since the 25th then surely he must get the credit dated the 27th.

    Ideally yes, but in our Monday to Friday 9-5 world where unions insist on double or more pay for working a minute outside these hours, the account holder probably only got changed at 9.01am on Monday 27th, and as a 24/7 computer managed the credit, that was applied to the previous person at 00.01am

    The billing from 25th was probably a manually entered date and only would affect the standing charge.

    No, the billing includes the starting meter reading from the morning of the 25th. Not sure what your bizarre comment about unions has to do with anything tbh.

    Anyway, he has pursued this with EI and awaiting further response and will follow up with CRU if necessary.
