I've opened a sterling account on Revolut to add to my existing Euro account and I converted a small amount of Euros so I now have Euro and sterling balances. If I go to the UK and tap my (physical) Revolut card in a cafe, on a bus or the Tube, then, assuming there's enough sterling in my account, will Revolut charge that automatically against my sterling balance?
I know I can make my Revolut card the default in Google Wallet and then tap the phone to pay but the question is the same - will Revolut automatically take the money from my sterling balance when the vendor is looking to charge me in sterling?
Apologies if this has been asked before but there's now more than 150 pages in this thread.
Here’s the error I’m getting .
Do you not get this @awec ?
yea don’t think you can recategorise those ones unfortunately.
the linked account thing is pretty poor at the moment IMO.
Have people been getting communications from Revolut about the credit card? I’ll be closing my Ulster CC next month and happy enough to wait a couple of months for Revolut rather than going with one of the usual options but haven’t heard anything directly from them.
EDIT: I see some people have. I somehow missed a page on the thread.
This story about revolut account fraud and the two fingers they gave the customer shows how it should never ever be a primary bank account
https://www.irishtimes.com/your-money/2023/02/27/the-anatomy-of-a-sinister-digital-banking-scam-as-it-happened/
Wow
I don't mean to blame the victim but first thing I'd have done was freeze the cards.
Still maybe that's also what Revolut should have done in this situation.
FFS - fraud happens with every bank and Irish legacy banks are hardly known for their ground breaking customer service, even when it comes to fraud. This could easily have been AIB of Bank of Ireland.
Revolut refunded the customer in full...
Is it a sponsored article from legacy banks here from the piss poor Conor Pope?
They only refunded him AFTER being contacted by the Irish times. Prior to that they had refused to refund.
Yes, fraud happens in all banks but their staff won't go home in the middle of a conversation just because their shift ends
Revolut customer service is appalling. This is simply an example.
their staff won't go home in the middle of a conversation just because their shift ends
😂😂😂😂
Do you really believe that?
Have a good day in the office , sorry I mean one of the legacy irish banks!
I always laugh loudly when someone make a comment like this. Especially when it comes from a cheerleader for the company in question
It means they have lost the argument and have no answer. - Very much what you see in a school playground.
BTW - if you check the BUNQ thread you will see I bank with them. I had my own experience with Revolut where they suddenly stopped paying direct debits and then claimed that they could not do direct debits, then claimed I had set them up incorrectly (I hadn't), then accepted their systems should have paid the direct debits - that was 6 weeks after the initial issue.
Revolut customer service is appalling. There is not getting away from that. They are not in any way suitable as a primary bank.
Yes - the person with the query sent the full transcript to the Irish Times and here's the pertinent part that you obviously didn't read.
22:07 MICHAEL: Dear Peter, unfortunately I am reaching the end of my shift now, but I will transfer your request to my colleagues, who will help you further with this matter. Thank you very much once again, it was a pleasure speaking with you today. I wish you a good day.
22:50 RODERICK: Hi there! My name is Roderick and I want to start by appreciating the time you spent waiting. I am here to assist you today, so please give me a moment to check everything and I will do my best to come back shortly with the reply.
The customer spent FOUR HOURS on chat to revolut without resolution. If you are happy with this level of service, then great, it suits you.
that isnt what was asked. Do you really believe that a customer service rep from AIB or BoI wouldnt leave a conversation and go home because it is the end of their shift? The revolut rep did go home but they passed the call on to another rep.
Indeed, it seems @walterking is the one that "obviously didn't read" 🤣
I would suspect that any other bank/fintech that had even a basic level of customer service would have had the fairly simple issue dealt with well before 3 hours were up. Even if they had to leave, it would not take 45 minutes for the colleague to take over.
btw I have a revolut account. I use it when I go to the UK/USA for the good value currency exchange, but I would never use it as a primary account because their customer service is so bad and their systems are not robust.
You have no idea how simple the issue was and again you have ignored what was asked.
.
I read and responded. I doubt it very much if someone would leave a conversation just because it was the end of a shift especially as it was a very simple issue that should only take a few minutes. That it takes revolut 4+ hours shows how poor their service is. And Revolut is known for poor service and an inability to make contact with anyone that can actually do something
Thanks for your opinion re Revolut as a primary bank
I would have thought cancelling the card and sending the customer a new one was the obvious solution here instead of hours and hours of over and back with support. I don't know why Revolut didn't do that. It is usually the first port of call, when a card has been used fraudulently.
When I started reading this article, my first reaction was that it was an old article.... except it is actually from yesterday. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I think we've had this story before a couple of months back... of if not one very similar although I can't remember which bank or even if I heard it on boards.
I didnt realise the story was from yesterday until you mentioned it. I have definitely read something very similar on this thread not so long ago.
Giving how simple it is to suspend or even terminate a card in the App I wonder where the complication is.
If a charge shows up that is not valid, I suspend the card and if don't get a satisfactory answer, I terminate the card.
Plus, even if someone calls and claims to be my financial services provider, I don't entertain it, even if they have parts of information. Especially financial providers which usually on have a chatbot or CS via online features.
Sure the service was horrible for that person, but seriously, suspend/terminate is an easy click in the app.
A poster on here willingly transferred all his money from his bank to revolut THEN Transferred it to the scammers revolut, then tried to call the banks incompetent.
that is what i was thinking of.
That's what I thought when I read that article. You can individually turn off contactless, online purchases, swipe and ATM withdrawals and you can freeze or terminate the card. But I still regard their support as weak and would never have more than €100 in my account.
That may well be what I'm thinking about.
There has been a lot of those fear mongering type articles as of late. It's good to have people aware of what can happen, but most of the issues come down to an external scam and user error. If you're not sure how something works don't keep 1000's in there
Gotta keep in mind there's more users than ever using Revolut and there's more features than ever that are dead easy to use, maybe too easy to use for some who aren't sure what they're doing. In that case maybe the legacy banks are for them but they will have to accept the lack of features and the monthly cost.
The legacy banks may have better customer service or fraud teams, but they have far less features available and accessible in comparison which will naturally keep fraud lower. As mentioned there's also simple ways to block cards and cancel online transactions and ATM withdrawals in the Revolut app that takes seconds.
A combination of both is the best way to use Revolut for me but if you know what's what you should be fine. If not, don't keep 10k in there
You also have to remember that Revolut probably have more active customers than any other bank so they are probably more likely to be scammed as a result.
Yes.Or they stop talking/texting
