I don't visit After Hours very often but today I did and came across this thread... https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2058283309/aggressive-facial-features

I was surprised to see it closed as the moderator didn't 'see the point in it'. Really? Have they looked over the past 20 years of threads in AH? You'd have a lot of closing to do!

The way it used to be, if a thread had no interest it dwindled down the page to obscurity. If it had interest - it didn't. This thread was closed within 20 minutes of someone thinking it was worth posting in. Closing it seems counter productive to me.

Anyway, if this is to be the policy of Boards.ie now, to close active threads that mod's deem 'pointless', perhaps you could post some guidelines on what constitutes a worthy thread in AH and what doesn't?

Mods should just ensure posters "Don't be a dick", it's that simple.

Unless we're all assimilated by the Borg there will always be threads that aren't to our taste, but we can ignore those that don't interest us. No one should be trying to get threads moved or shut down to suit their own sensibilities.

When woke ideology enables convicted male rapists to claim to be female so they get sent to women's prisons it's not pigeonholing the issue, it is both horrifying and hilarious all at once that we have ended up in that situation. Let's be honest, some of the gender identity nonsense is the absolute pinnacle of 'woke'.

That's why it is important to keep highlighting the absolute ridiculousness of it all and that is why it was fun to watch the poster girl for that particular strand of wokeness, Nicola Sturgeon, squirm when reality struck. That issue is a perfect fit for the Wokism thread imo.

Maybe some of those who once bought into the madness are suffering from a sort of buyer's remorse now that they see real life ramifications from the ideology they cheerleaded and they don't like to see that pointed out.

There's been more activity in AH in the last few weeks than there has been in the last 20 years. The fact a thread has been made about it speaks volumes. @and in the morning Diamonds of Frost has made some valid points which you should take on board.

If After Hours is shooting the breeze and lighthearted posts then posts like yours and the discussion you are referring to, don’t belong there. It’s highly charged political stuff which is always going to read as very angry.

While you may feel the topic is suited to Wokeism thread, is the Wokeism thread suited to the After Hours Forum?

There’s absolutely nothing lighthearted about the topic, there’s nothing lighthearted about your post, that’s clear.

After Hours may need to find it’s identity, someone else mentioned that it’s currently a “one captures all” forum but it needs a direction. it’s either lighthearted or it’s not.

I would also say that the 'wokism' thread shouldn't be a place to debate the various issues. It's simply a place to laugh at the absurdity of it all.

And there are angry people on both sides of any of those debates, that is going to be just par for the course.

That s why my opinion is that it might be better suited to Politics or Current Affairs as by definition, it does not fit.

By definition of complaining about woke things and vice Versa , it’s going to get political which is at odds at what people were complaining about nonsense threads being closed.

I dunno if you’re only dipping in and out of the thread that you don’t see it, but that’s definitely not true. Only a couple of posts previous to the recent closure was the whole thing about trigger warnings, and that’s only the most recent example.

Anyone new coming into the thread could be forgiven for thinking the thread was a catharsis for people who wanted to rant about the latest obscure thing which popped up in their social media feeds, much less ‘funny haha’ silliness, and more ‘how dare they?’ sort of stuff that is designed to wind people up who take that stuff seriously.

But AH has always had serious threads too. One posted started a thread about a traumatic childhood experience and others posted about their own life-changing events. That stated in AH. There's a thread on Connor McGregor, should that be moved to a sport's forum? Sophie Toscan du Plantier, is there a crime forum? T.D.s, should that be moved to Politics?

But you haven't answered, if you don't think the thread belongs in AH why do you post in it?

I’ve asked for the other mods opinions here because it’s a long running thread but that doesn’t make it exempt from moderating.

Obviously if you like the thread you’ll want it open and if you can’t stand it you want it closed (or are indifferent). The fact anyone arguing for either is ridiculous because you’ll never agree with each other.

I saw those posts. The whole point of the thread is to laugh at excessive wokism.

Trigger warnings on everything is excessive, it's akin to trying to have a thread closed or moved.

Adults should be able to decide what media they consume, if they can't trigger warnings aren't really much use.

Surely the only purpose of mods is to remove any potentially libelous comments and stop people being abusive to others on the thread as long as that isn't happening they should leave thread alone no matter how nonsensical they are.

The Wokeism thread should have been kept open it was a busy thread that gathered lots of discussion and was humorous at times.Generally the only people in that thread that were causing trouble were AnCappaillDorcha but he was almost certainly doing it to get the thread locked (as he has now achieved) and he's just deeply unpleasant in every thread he appears on so he should have just been banned from the thread and the thread should have been left go on.

I got barred from AH for a week, unless that change, for the crime of the century.

It was to ask what mod in the CT forum seems to put up posts that are not in accordance to medical advice. Then I thought maybe that poster is correct and I suggested that poster could be a mod in the COVID-19 forum.

That’s what I was saying clearly wasn’t true, because it isn’t, given the posters OTT reaction to what was just the latest example of wokery.

The thread is littered with examples of posters taking the whole wokery thing far too seriously, well beyond the point of treating it as a joke or being able to have a laugh about it. It comes off like it’s only supposed to be a laugh and it’s not supposed to be taken seriously when anyone questions what is patently BS.
