A chat thread for this and that.
Mount Marathon, Alaska. If you know, you know.
I've been watch Ollie Ostrander on youtube for a while, she does the hard work, and very funny as well. That 5k is no joke.
I don't know if it's the algorithm or just more ordinary people doing YouTube. Phily Bowden quit her job to go for the Olympics. Set a new women's record of 17:15 at Chippenham parkrun on Christmas Day, said she can probably do it faster. Looks like she has some sub 16 5ks and 32-33 minute 10ks in her back catalogue.
I've watched some of her YT vlogs. She comes across as a nice girl. I think she had some mental/health issues as well a while back.
Has a 2.35 marathon too a far as I know
Yeah, her pinned tweet mentions a Telegraph article and disordered eating. Looks like another case of this not being well handled by an institution.
Oh really I hadn't seen that. All too common unfortunately
Look at this hero
Not familiar with this Twitter account or the term 'super shoes'. I haven't tried any. Worth a read.
Make 2023 your best Strava year!
Great thread here from Steve Magness. Should be required reading for anyone new to running or indeed new to training of any kind.

Unfortunately, my local charity shop doesn't take electronics, so the Beurer watch and HR strap (with or without the earphones) are free to any new runners, willing to pick up in Swords, I would ask that you make a small donation to laura Lynn (purely on honour, no receipt required). The earphones are cheap and cheerful, old phone charger charges them. Long press on the power button sets pairing mode, they still work.
Now the polar watch and module are well used, strap for the watch is held together, so these are free free, if anybody wants to use the watch, on say a stationary bike or treadmill, you'll need a chest strap for the module. Again pick up is in Swords, but the watch is really in tatters (one button cap missing) so don't travel far for them, just don't want to throw them in a bin, module might suit someone for a spare.
DM me if anybody wants them, I'd hope the Beurer watch and strap go to a new runner, if possible.
All gone to a good home 👍️
Tracks well with a discussion somewhere around here recently, probably on the (one of the) shoes thread(s).
Beware of internet doctors ,
I really needed this video. I need to start really impressing my 11 Strava followers.
Wasn't aware of this guy, Dick Fosbury. High jump mould breaker. Heard about his death on a BBC news bulletin.
Protos of the gram (Instagram) (Protosofthegram) is for those on the other end of the spectrum, who know a bit too much about them and also want to know what's coming next down the super shoe track 😊
Anyone know this guy, Alex Schwazer?
Fair play.
Not entirely sure if I have taken leave of my senses. But I have just signed up for some running this weekend over here in Germany. Hanau to be specific.
Titled The "Brothers Grimm Run" (Brüder-Grimm-Lauf) it basically involves running 82km.
Not AS bad as it sounds though, as this is spread over 3 days, with 5 runs.
Friday Evening - 16km
Saturd Morning - 14km
Saturd Afternoon - 16km
Sunday Morning - 17km
Sunday Afternoon - 18km
I am not very adept at reading Height Profile Charts but it looks like a couple of steep parts here and there, though the first of the 5 races is meant to be relatively flat. The height profiles are shown here:
Anyway as the most running I have done to date is 21km with usually 2 days rest before I do another 21km.... any and all advice welcome other than "Don't do it!". :)
Looks fun, obviously getting a good feed(plenty of carbs) in a few hours before each one will help, and protein after to take the edge off. If the weather is good and your in OK shape sure why not.
Interesting article on changing the focus of your running from splits and times to stress reduction and time in nature (not for everyone obvs but an interesting perspective I thought. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/jul/24/slow-running-revolution-sexy-pace-enjoy-the-race?CMP=share_btn_tw
Absolutely anyone can run and there should not be any pressure on people to compete. No one should be excluded. But I think if you are entering races, and thats what marathons and 10ks are, you should be trying to improve your times. Otherwise whats the point.
I try not to ask people their times. But I do ask of they are enjoying it and getting better. Now I know there is a point where we all get slower due to injury, age etc. But for me, people should always be striving to get better in sport.

Eh, by that logic any experienced runner should give up, because we all lose athletic potential as we get older.
You ignored the bit where I called that out at the end then.
Maybe you're not getting better, but at least you're trying to
Ah yes, sorry.
An alternative view is that people should be striving to enjoy themselves more, and getting faster is only one way to do that.
There was a guy near me for a while when I was doing my half marathon in kilkee who looked like he was having a great time, he was taking photos of the runners up the windy road ahead, taking photos of the cliffs and other scenery, applauding the trad music players that were on the route and generally seemed to be loving life!
I actually really admired it, he was obviously comfortable enough with doing the distance at whatever pace he was happy with doing that he could just focus on enjoying the moment and the view.
Me on the other hand was more focused on my breathing, my form and my watch etc
I got satisfaction out of that race for the achievement of it, it was result of 4 or 5 months of putting as much effort into running than I have ever put into any sporting endeavour, but I sure didnt have as good a time running it as this guy.
So for me personally, I think I would like to be improving with each race, but I certainly wouldn't hold it against anyone for just going and having fun if that's what they wanted to do!
Yeah I should have said, I wouldn't knock anyone or put them down for it. Anything that gets people out and about is to be applauded and encouraged.
It's all subjective folks. Get what you want to get out of it.
The whole running easy movement may help engage people in the amazing sport of running. BUT why not push yourself, find your limits, pass them. There is nothing better than the feeling you get when you surpass what you yourself thought was impossible. Running is perfect for this. The lessons learned are beyond value. So yes, the real value in running is pushing your own limits, the psychological boost of doing something you thought impossible a couple of years prior solely through hard work and persistence cannot be measured and advising people against trying pisses me off. Running hard sometimes, test yourself, fvck it and fvck the begrudgers
