Why do taxi drivers drive off before passengers have fastened their seatbelts?

This happens practically every time I take a taxi, as soon as the door is closed the driver is off, tonight I struggled fastening the beatbelt and the driver was 100m down the road before I could fasten it

If a taxi is involved in an accident before a passenger can fasten their seatbelt the passenger could be injured or killed or injure or kill other occupants by being thrown into them

Surely this is illegal?

Exactly it's not rocket science to put a seatbelt on while moving. Now if he starts doing doughnuts and pulling off hand break turns while you are trying to get the seatbelt on well then I suppose you can complain about that.

I prefer them to be moving off as soon as my foot parts company with the path. Plenty of time to close the door afterwards.
