It is absolutely lazy journalism and inspired by Harbison`s comment that there was 50 fractures. One good blow to the head with an axe, poker or stick would cause multiple skull fractures. The block with force would crush the skull. Ten blows with that block would leave hundreds if not thousands of fractures. The recent Mirror article is also lazy journalism where a hack with access to Bailey goes into the file and tries to associate individuals who were initial suspects in early `97 with what was said at the recent Garda press conference. There are two lines of information in the article. One is a "garda source", but that is just a regurgitation of what was said at the press conference. The other line is "

The breakfast timeline is interesting actually. For arguments sake, lets say Alfie had murdered her in the morning. If we say she had been up and was having breakfast at around 8:00 - 8:30am (based on breakfast contents in her stomach); then the altercation took place between 8:30 - 9:00am. Body was phoned in by Shirley at 10am. That's hour between the murder and phone call is a very tight timeframe - but not unrealistic either. How long could you wait before calling the guards if you had been Alfie/Shirley (if they were involved)?

My point exactly. The improbable happens. The odds of a two line ticket winning are approx 5.3 milliony to one, yet someone wins (eventually). Over a million two line tickets are sold for eah draw. What are the odds of nobody winning for 63 consecutive draws? Yet it happened.
Probability can correctly be applied across a suitably sized population sample but not to an individual instance.
