Heard that.
But surely if the family had tens or hundreds of millions in wealth stashed in other countries , how would they manage to make use of it to live now at home?
Are they still being monitored or are they free to move millions around Bank accounts from India to Ireland? Would that incur the possibility of more court cases?
Agreed, that was the mistake, saving the two reckless banks. Most of the debt can be traced back to those two.
It's much lower than that.

This bit was a bit mad near the end.
Ignoring the slip of the tongue where he mentioned Sean quinn and the paymaster in the same sentence, is he still caught up in his own conspiracy theories that he is still making out that this is some personal crusade against Sean quinn? Because they are going after the "boys that done it" *and* the lad paying for it
That lad can barley handle children on a toy show
It did. Dukes said he believes with very good reason that the Quinns have money that they put out of reach of the irish Tax payer in India and Switzerland. And a substantial sum at that,
Tell you what, walk into a place of work in Dundalk, Monaghan, Cavan and tell them violence is in their blood.
You'll walk away unharmed, but you won't forget the response you'll get.
Dig up.
Like I said, carry on the choo-choo train if you wish, but Dukes' comments have been noted, and the FG party have a PR problem on their hands courtesy of a grandee and former leader.
You don't get to tell people from the region what level offence they should take from these comments. That isn't how it works.
Between 10 and 20% of the Monaghan population are Protestant
But he’s not wrong and there are a load of people looking for offence here
I would have liked the film to end on what the current situation is with SQ and his family.
Is he getting some sort of allowance to live on? What income has he? Did they let him keep the family home as a small gesture?
Do his kids get an income? I seen a piece in the indo saying they have to account for every cent on groceries. Maybe a bit of hyperbole there, but are they also being given an 'allowance?
Yeh the same priest surely had a slice of the 100k wedding cake.
"Shouldn't be entitled to have a vote" ? Which FG Cumann are you representing?
Yeah objectively speaking that was needless and would have been better left unsaid.
A scan across twitter yesterday night and a lot of people had switched their focus off Quinn and onto that comment.
The optics are awful and creates a real us vs them in Dublin (a mindset which already exists but the net has widened now).
Terrible from Dukes.
I never said he did. I wondered how he appeared to have no qualms about pontificating on rumours and gossip from his altar but didn't have the balls to resign in protest at the horrific abuse perpetrated and covered up by his fellow priests. Selective princeples I call it or as his jesuit buddies called it when found to be lying through their teeth at a judicial inquiry " mental reservation " !
Don't deserve a vote? Charming stuff. I happened to be on WhatsApp this morning with a colleague of mine from Louth (white collar professional, father of 3, homeowner), who would be a member of a coveted demographic for FG, and not prone to fissures of emotion on anything generally.
He was disgusted with Dukes' comments and he signed off with "typical Fine Gael".
If people don't think a lot of "ordinary citizens" in this region aren't p*ssed off with Dukes and that it hasn't confirmed lingering thoughts they harboured about FG, then I'm afraid to say they are tin-eared political illiterates.
Again, no-matter, FG will get their thumping at the ballot box up there, and as always, they'll have earned it with their arrogance.
Bailing out Irish Nationwide was ridiculous as well both that and Anglo should have been allowed to go bust.
A lot of "ordinary citizens" whatever that means, of the border counties have been grossly offended by Dukes' remarks, and his party of which he is still a backroom dealer will pay the price.
The fact that Dukes is part of a set that wouldn't be in high-regard by many in provincial Ireland compounds the matter.
Boneheaded comments, and boneheaded defence of them from usual quarters.
The fact that certain people were on a roll bringing SF into the mire (with some success I might add) in recent weeks, and now a FG stalwart back-room big beast makes the headlines about him and unacceptable commentary should give pause for thought with the brains trust.
Will they actually pause to think? Doubtful. No matter boys, carry-on regardless. Talk about spunking momentum up against a wall.
Would you cop on? Currently most people who heard the comment don't give a crap and come the election anyone who still bears a grudge agaisnt Dukes for saying it probably shouldn't be entitled to have a vote if that's how easily they'll choose who is worthy of it
Dukes was appointed as chairperson of IBRC because the governemnt knew he would defend the state and ensure that the state had some recourse to all the developers and Quinn that were up to their eyeballs in debt. Ultimately Dukes would always look to protect the state.
His political pedigree speaks for itself as a true blue FG. On the whole his reputation is honest and has put the interests of the country before him and his party (think Tallaght strategy). However, let's not forget that he also helped Michael Lowry climb the FG ranks. Plus he succeeded Lowry as minister for communications (who resigned) after he awarded the controversial mobile phone license to Denis O'Brien. There was a huge smell off that process and despite calls to revisit it, he point blank refused. Plus as chair of IBRC he was caught up in the whole siteserv mess and of the bank giving lower interest rates to O'Brien during the financing of that deal.
For me, Dukes called it right with Quinn and had the inside track. What was telling was that IBRC had made a provision for Quinn and his family and they refused it!
Quinn is no different than Dukes or any other politician and has the neck, lack of morals & mefeiner apporach to succeed as a TD. If Mike Lowry can top the poll in South Tipp, why wouldnt Quinn run as a TD or for Europe and put it up to them?
Interesting to see that the Quinns still hold some sway & sympathy in the border community up there. There'll be a lot of water under the bridge yet, before we ever have any sort of normal state that encompasses all the counties of Ireland. A lot of water.
I think you'd be surprised comments like these do to a party when they don't distance themselves from them. This is a former party leader and still a behind-the-scenes soothsayer.
FG supporters in walking themselves off the end of the pier shocka.
It'll be a long-lonely night in the border count centres for FG candidates. Humphreys doesn't rely on a Protestant vote btw. There isn't enough of them to go around.
That’s your game. At least have the decency to own it.
Did the priest say anything that was untrue?
Bar the Protestant vote which Heather Humphries harvests, the kind of people put out by Alan Dukes wouldn’t vote for FG anyway
Whatabouttery isn’t an original angle
How do you know?
Come the general election all FF,SF and the rest have to do is play Dukes arrogance and comments on a loop and that's it, no FG candidate will get In.
You're making some disturbing leaps there Andy!
Thats the level of character you are dealing with here.
Vile.
So what. RTE commission programmes from production companies all the time.
There will be zero interest in this series from outside Ireland.
