I think we can clearly see by now that Bakhmut despite the Ukrainian officials repeatedly saying otherwise, is in fact strategically very important.
If it wasn't Ukraine wouldn't try so hard to defend it and Russia wouldn't be throwing everything at it. It's protecting bigger Ukrainian cities behind it and would become a new frontline hub for Russians as it connects to Lysychansk by motorway.
No doubt they've made small gains and closed in on the city but this has taken 2 full months and lost countless Russian lives. If Ukraine can hold out another month surely they'll hold it through winter.

Starlink, Military coms are all separate from civilian infrastructure. You not taking that down taking out power or cables. Modern battlefield is wireless. As long as you have end to end encryption your ok. Very hard to intercept best bet is trying to blanket block Via interference on all bands for example. And that's very hard with starlink for example each device is a separate entity. You could have two devices on one frequency another 2 on another rinse repeat. And blanket blocking affects your own coms but who knows its russians. On top of that you have microwave, RF, Mobile networks pick a G, You can even have line of site laser for example really fast bandwidth.
