I applaud Senator Craughwell for dragging this issue into the light of day and insisting that the people and the Oireachtas are fully informed of and must give their approval to any such deals. We must face reality and either accept our position as a UK protectorate or take urgent steps to be otherwise.

Leaving aside the Defence aspects there is a hugely important point to be seen: who decides on the direction of the country? Is it unelected officials or the Oireachtas? Has an illegal and unconstitutional agreement been reached by civil servants?
This next one won’t happen but if the answer to the last question is yes then someone should be out the door with no pension.

Deal or no deal, secret or public, if a rogue plane is in Irish airspace and heading toward the UK, you better believe the RAF will be sending fighter jets into our hopelessly unprotected airspace.
That seems to be the argument: that if such agreement has been made it needed Oireachtas approval and not having that it is unconstitutional and illegal.
Easy fix. Swap the British for the French. But I wager the French would actually want paying. 🤔

What influance. They would do it anyway. You think the cute hoor politicians will pay when they can get it for free. It's probably something like this. Ireland will not complain about them in the Airspace on condition they also come when called in certain situations.

True but I don't know what the persons angle is. All laws have been passed so a deal is nothing to do with them. Senators can't barge into the Revenue and demand to be shown everything. It's not a constitutional issue. It would be easier to actually just ask the British.

Good to see Craughwell doing his best for his former buddies in the Defence Forces. I'd say the DF Chief of Staff (and former ace Air Corps pilot) Seán Clancy is delighted with him.
His angle: any such deal with the RAF needs Dáil and Senate approval first. Any deal done without that is illegal.

I'm not sure.I'm happy to have the Brits keeping an eye on the Russians around our seas and skys .We cannot do it ourselves and no matter what to think about the British they are a friendly nation to us now.
