Personally I have more than a few issues with oul Zelensky before this shíte kicked off. He was 'progressive' enough for Ukraine, but that's a low bloody bar. Our collective amnesia can blind us to some of this now, but Ukraine was a well dodgy place. Corrupt as fúck. As I said earlier in the thread in a horrific way this war could, and should, be the saving of that nation for Ukrainians. The beady eye is on them like never before and if the movers and shakers in Ukraine want to leave Soviet thinking and corrupt criminal thinking behind and move forward as a great nation this bloody baptism is it. IMHO anyway.
Again I agree Wibbs, Ukraine was an incredibly corrupt country. I read of an Irish farmer who leased a farm sowed his crop and went out to find it had been harvested, police shrugged their shoulders. The point is much (not all) of this corruption was a result of Russian influence and domination. It was the choice of the Ukrainian people to assert their sovereignty and begin the arduous journey of reforming their country and moving away from the financial corruption imposed by Russia that lead to this point.

However corrupt Ukraine is, toilet robbing russia is reaping what it's been sowing for decades in the West now and that in itself gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. I'd like to believe Ukraine will grab the opportunity to change and that we will help them after the war too, it'll be hard for them but not as hard as liberating their country.

We all saw what the progress was like in areas where the Russians took control....murderous rapist evil barstewards.....and even worse. I believe you might be very naïve. This is the most fantastic war America has ever had to fight. They haven't had to commit a single boot on the ground and by proxy they have their decades-old arch enemy committed to fighting in a tiny corner of Europe with all of their available piece-meal resources. This war was manor from heaven for the Yanks and they are going to prolong it to their advantage. Their whole armaments industry's order books are filling up. The likes of India who have been buying RU military hardware over the decades are going to have to switch suppliers now that they realise their military equipment is deficient compared to American suppled Pakistani purchases. The EU is going to have to finance military budgets in excesses of their spending on education on American hardware to meet their new NATO commitments. There's only going to be one winner after this military blunder.
And I guess, that there are Countries who are only too happy to have a way to dispose of their obsolete weapons and kill the murderous Russian ORC's at the same time. Unexpected bonus.

I'd say that if after the shooting stops they're still serious about EU membership, they'll be in the light of a very strong spotlight. The EU will surely be wary of the prospect of assimilating another Hungary and even Poland, who don't seem to have grasped that when in the EU, you get stuff but you also give stuff up. However, if cronysim and corruption can be linked with the old Russian/Soviet way of doing things, that might help the process.

You are correct that there will be more deaths this way, the difference is that most of them will be russians, those who have fallen either for putins propaganda or too afraid to speak up about the regime (lest they fall out a window).

Remember Mariupol? The death toll their is looking to be massive, the place absolutely raised to the ground, yet many Ukrainians stayed and fought against hopeless odds and held out for a long time.
Just my theory but I believe if the west never sent any weapons, and left the Ukranians to their own defence, we would be now looking at far more cities and towns, perhaps even Kyiv raised to the ground something like Mariupol was, I dont believe the Ukranians would have surrendered, they may have kept fighting but with far greater destruction and casualties on the Ukrainian side. I think its a real possibility their would be far greater loss of life, along with far more raping, looting and the likes from the Russians had the west not helped supply advanced weapons.

If they nuke the West of Ukraine to try minimise the effect on Russia they effectively nuke Poland also thanks to the fallout and thus NATO joins in.
I get it's possible but nuking a country that border's Western Russia where most of the upper class live is not a wise move.
