‘Game of Thrones’ Jon Snow Sequel Series in Development at HBO

The network has entered into early development on its first sequel to its blockbuster fantasy drama: A live-action spin-off series centered on the fan-favorite character Jon Snow, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Kit Harington is attached to reprise the role should a series move forward. The actor was twice nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal of an action-hero who struggles to uphold his family’s noble values in a brutal world.

In Thrones’ eighth-and-final season, Jon Snow discovered his true name was Aegon Targaryen, a potential heir to the Iron Throne. In the series finale, he was exiled from Westeros and journeyed North of the Wall with the Wildlings to leave his old life behind.

Since completing his work across eight seasons of Thrones, Harington has appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, co-starring in 2021’s Eternals. He also recently starred in the title role in the National Theater’s live production of Henry V. On Thrones, the actor was known for enduring some of the show’s most grueling filming, including the final season’s infamous 11 weeks of winter night shoots in Northern Ireland.

The development signals an intriguing new direction in HBO’s handling of author George R.R. Martin’s fantasy universe, a move not unlike Disney+’s management of its Star Wars and Marvel brands where the streamer has found success launching character-focused sequel series such as WandaVision (starring Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (with Ewan McGregor reprising his iconic role).

Perhaps most boldly from a creative standpoint, the project would upend Thrones’ final season as the last word on the fates of the surviving characters in HBO’s most popular and Emmy-winning series of all time. In theory, the project could open the door for other surviving characters from the Thrones universe to reappear – such as Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) and Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie).

This development news means there are now seven Thrones projects in the works in addition to the upcoming House of the Dragon prequel series, which debuts Aug. 21. Dragon tells the story of a civil war within House Targaryen and is set about 200 years before the events in Thrones.

This sounds like a very bad idea to me, the very definition of after the Lord Mayor's show. Can you imagine a LOTR sequel that tried to eke drama out of Sam Gamgee's life in the Shire after Frodo went over the sea

Seems pointless.

Part of the draw of the sometimes bland Jon Snow was the weight of hype around his lineage, and how he'd cope with the weight of expectation. And, well we know how that all turned out.

"Jon The Ranger" just doesn't seem that interesting at all. There's nowhere for his character to actually go (figuratively, assume literally he'll head north)

Any trip south is going to have very little consequence, he's hardly gonna be at odds with his "siblings" over their respective kingdoms.

From the end of the show I thought they were setting up a sequel for Arya and seemed the only logical one. Maybe Masie Williams is saying no. Do not see how they can do a Jon Snow one even if I do like the character

I get the feeling that they are doing this as a way to retcon some of the stuff in the final season of Game of Thrones. Everyone seems to agree that the last season was really bad so maybe this show is an attempt to give some more closure and change a few things. But I'm just speculating.

Her saying no? I highly, highly doubt that. That girl isn't going to have a career as an A lister. She probably knows this. GoT is her meal ticket. There is no way she would turn down her own show.

You are right that it certainly did feel like they were setting her up for a spin-off. I think the public mocking of "Whats west of Westeros?" and "I know a killer when I see one" probably but death to that idea. Who would want to watch it? Sounds just as poor as a Jon Snow continuation.

The characters had their story. Do a time jump and tell something new would be my suggestion.

They could reveal that the Night King was just the leader of the advance guard for the... Night Emperor. He'll have more sharp bits on his head and his death will be even more of an anti-climax.

Some flashbacks, maybe from Brynden Rivers, but probably best not to base a series on it. Another Targaryaen civil war, but without dragons, would appear too simialr to House of the Dragon.

The sories themselves are shortenough, I just hope they don;t stretch them too much.
