When has a high-jumper completed their jump ?

A high jumper clears the bar and ends up in the landing foam.

At what point is the jump deemed to have been completed ? Is it when the athlete leaves the landing area ?

What I am thinking of is the situation where the jumper has cleared the bar but is still in the landing area when the bar falls off.

Would it be the same for the pole vault ?

The jump is completed when they have left the landing area. The same rule applies to the pole vault.

so why do some of them celebrate by jumping up & down on the foam - bit risky?

The foam isn’t connected to the bar. Have you ever seen anyone fail a jump this way?

no, but its not beyond the bounds of possibility - say if they fell backwards and hit the pole whilst celebrating?

That's not what the rules say. It's a myth.

From the rule book:

An athlete fails if:

After the jump, the bar does not remain on the supports because of the action of the athlete whilst jumping

If you clearly clear the bar while jumping and knock it off while celebrating that is not a fail.

I took that from the official Olympic rules. The jump is not complete until they leave the landing area
