Happened to me once, Im autistic, I had a shite day, specifically requested a taxi that could take card so I didnt have to go to a cash machine.

Arrived at destination, went to pay, driver told me he didnt accept card, I told him that I was told a car who took credit card would be sent, he contacted the company and they told me they didnt accept card.

Why the fcuk did they lie to me when I ordered the taxi then?

If a taxi company says they'll send a taxi that accepts card then I fcuking expect one

Perhaps it isn't a parameter on their despatch/booking software that it can specify a taxi with a card facility. Did you contact them since to ask what happened?

It definitely is not a parameter on their booking system. Because they told the OP they didn't accept cards. Which I find a bit strange because surely that's a decision for each driver?

The OP says it was Trinity Taxis. Strange then, that they have a Visa/Mastercard/Laser logo on their homepage. And there's this at the foot of their 'About' page..

online booking plus chip and pin payments make us the modern taxi firm of choice.

Perhaps the correct thing to do was to ask the driver as soon as you got into the car,if he took CC payments, just to confirm.

I use a taxi maybe 3-4 times a year. I set up one of the taxi hailing apps because I rarely have cash on me, although you have the choice to pay by cash to the driver as well.

There's a good reason why they hate taking cards.

It caught them out when Covid payments became based on your declared income and the payments to many taxi drivers dropped to 250.00

The excuse that it costs too much is just an excuse, even sum-up who give free terminals only charge 1.6% and they don't have to pay the bank 0.5% for cash lodgement or have to spend time making that lodgement

Many of the despatch firms take card payment over the phone, both for one off bookings or to settle payment on some accounts. They ~~should~~ could have offered the former option here, that way everyone is happy as the driver still gets paid albeit a week later.

The taxi driver did their job and got you to the destination so you have a debt and as card is not legal tender offering to pay with it is not paying your debt. Have the law changed to make cards legal tender or require PSVs to accept cards, but until then there's no requirement for a taxi to accept a card regardless of what you requested from the company.

BTW booking a taxi over the phone is useless. How many people complain that they ordered an accessible taxi or 8 seater only for a saloon to turn up or book a taxi for the next morning for no taxi to turn up. What happens is the dispatcher looks for the nearest taxi at the time and sends it to you the taxi driver has no idea what special requests you made to the dispatcher. Like courier companies what the taxi company says to the customer is now what they have the drivers do, but the drivers get the abuse so the dispatchers don't care(they still paid).

I believe the NTA were going to make it a requirement for all taxis to accept card payments, as part of their license, back in 2020.

I suspect it was put on hold due to Covid, however I'd assume it will happen eventually. It is ridiculous it has taken so long.

In the meantime I'd recommend using one of the apps like Uber, Free Now, etc. if you want to pay by card.

Why should a taxi driver take a hit financially if they use credit card facilities? 1.6% you say Sum up take, its still 1.6% which all adds up.

What happens if you’re robbed and all your cash is taken. It’s hard to steal credit card receipts.

As an example Bank Of Ireland charge 0.6% to lodge cash and 3% to lodge coins.

Of course when the NTA last suggested this back in 2019, they were going to increase fares by 4% to cover the cost of taking cards. Of course 4% is a lot more then 1.69%, specially when you consider the fare increase would apply to cash fares too, not just cards, so it would be a nice extra earner for drivers, they wouldn't be out of pocket at all.

That fare increase was cancelled due to Covid, but I assume they will do something similar this time around.

One of the many reasons I avoid taxis unless desperate or there’s no other option. Last time I got one was from the port into the city centre to catch a bus and had to be there to meet the bus on time. Needless to say it was cash only…

Neither do most taxi drivers, to remain in business as a taxi driver has a requirement that you are tax compliant. IE A Tax return has been filled in and filed, regardless of whether payment is in cash or card it is the declared income not what is paid into your bank.

If the meter is on in a taxi and you pay cash, that doesn't mean the cash is going into the taxi drivers pocket and he/she isn't paying tax on the cash. The meters can be checked by revenue so it would be pretty stupid to not declare this income.
