See what happened after communism fell? Russia was falling apart. People felt like outside forces were destroying the country. Many people began to look back fondly at the USSR. Along came Putin to make Russia feel strong again.
If Russia was to be so hobbled that it had to get rid of their nukes, how do you think they'd feel? Do you think they'd care one whit about the west. Your opinion is that they would blame Putin. But in a country with no free press and a massive security apparatus, that's hard. People in the soviet republics like Estonia rose up against the USSR but the Russians never did. And it was an internal coup that got rid of Gorbachev. Not the people. And he was a moderate reformer, not an autocrat like Putin.
If push came to shove, Putin will do anything to stay in power. That includes using nukes. That includes turning the army on his own people.
And his own people do have a lot of pride in Russia. they won't want to see it humbled and beaten.
What is going on in Putin's mind is very much mindset psychology. If one goes back to WW2 Stalin and Communism and onward to Fascism both Russia and China are very similar. Leadership in Russia in WW2 did not give a fig for the death rate within the Russian army or civilian life. Stalin just kept sending men forwards no matter how many died. Likewise, China in a similar mode did so later in support of the Korean and Vietnam wars. No matter how many died they would send more. Putin would not blink an eye if Russia lost 100,000 in the Ukraine invasion over 12 months. He would send 100,000 more. Against that mindset what can be done? What is best for Russia now is for all political prisoners [there are plenty in jail] to be released and for a proper democratic election to take place. Breaking up Russia or dividing it up like what happened to Germany after WW2 might be a foreseeable prospect. The problem is... what to do with all those missiles! If Putin is not removed from Russia along with his band of Orcs, he will keep sending in the cannon fodder. One possible situation to develop would be for commando runs on Gas and Oil facilities in Russia on a big scale to put an end to Russia's ability to sell gas and oil.

There are massive differences involved. A rellie of mine dealt with Soviet soldiers in the immediate aftermath of Germany falling and he noted the average Soviet troops he dealt with were almost all dirt poor farmboys from the provinces, illiterate to a man, even fascinated by things like electric light and indoor plumbing*(their officer class was far better educated). From another planet. That planet is long dead. Sure you still have the low IQ morons and people from the far flung provinces, but the majority are far more exposed to the world today. You could fling near cavemen at German forces in wave after wave back then, egged on by their "betters" at the point of a gun. They knew little better. IMHO today that will only work for so long and for a lot shorter time than back then. putin might not blink an eye at 100,000 dead Russian soldiers, but the country would, especially if they were made up of their blue eyed sons from the west, rather than Asiatics from the east.
The Chinese would be different too. Back then they didn't have the one child policy so big whoop if you lost a son, you had spares, now they don't.

I believe the problem with these exploding tanks is that it is the munitions on board the tank itself that keep blowing up when struck - either the tanks were badly designed or the Ukrainians have identified a weak spot in the armour.
Judging by that river crossing massacre did it come under precision artillery attack? All that destruction can't have been by drones.
