Even the EU gets some representation, but I don't see Russia on the list.
It's a blunder all right. But neither country was interested in joining Nato until the invasion - the PM of Finland said in January "it's very unlikely Finland will join Nato during the term of this government". And if Russia had won the war in a couple of days, then Sweden and Finland might have stayed neutral in case they thought joining Nato would bump them up to #1 and #2 of Russia's "who to invade next" -list. Now it seems like they can both join since there's no realistic threat of a Russian armed invasion while they are getting hammered in Ukraine (or in immediate aftermath of the war).
So those Russian military strategists would have needed to be fairly clever in order to 1) predict the war plan is sh** and 2) that instead of scaring Sweden and Finland into submission, they'd both suddenly change their defense policy.
They didn't get 1) right, so how strange is it really that they got 2) wrong too?

More like a piece of s h it
Wasn't much to look at beforehand in all fairness.
I believe the countries/companies that we purchase arms from are for the most part sending arms already, but for what ever reason the government don't want to be seen to be breaking with the traditional stance of not sending arms to a country at war.
While in no way equivalent to the Ukraine and their war against Russia's invasion, the government have refused a number of export licences of dual usage materials from Irish companies to countries like Saudi Arabia due to the governments concerns about their use of these materials.
While these companies might have other customers that people would have issues with them dealing with, so far from what I can find no refusal for export licenses have been issued.
From the Guardian:
The regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine’s south are being transferred to “the ruble zone” and subordinated to Russian administration, Zelenskiy claimed in his latest address.
The Ukrainian president said Russia’s actions in the territories are following the example of the so-called separatist republics of the DPR and LPR.
The occupiers are also trying to tear off the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, following the example of the so-called DPR and LPR.
This territory is being transferred to the ruble zone and subordinated to the administrative machine of Russia.”
The answer to the attempted “ruble occupation” of the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions must be full coverage of the Russian banking and financial systems by sanctions, Zelenskiy added.
Speaking to Ukrainians directly, he urged residents in the regions to resist Russian orders.
Sabotage the orders of the occupiers. Do not cooperate with them. Protest. It is necessary to hold on so that Russia does not manage to distort life in other cities of Ukraine, like it did in Donetsk and Luhansk.”
If Ukraine had collapsed in the first week, this would have been the whole country.
Just to add, the '22 Constitution meant very little for issues like that insofar that it could be basically modified at will anyway
As you know, the current Constitution does not prohibit soldiers being sent anywhere. As evidenced by participation by many UN missions.
Relevant Article for those that don't know:
War shall not be declared and the state shall not participate in any war save with the assent of Dáil Éireann.
So could Ireland join NATO without needing a referendum? If not why?
The reason we are not in NATO is because of British occupation of the North. Nothing to do with the Constitution. That is a historical thing pre-GFA and Articles 2&3 changing
He should have mentioned his sons name in the tweet. Every little helps.
The original tweet does
How does the north stop us? I would have thought it would have restricted the UK joining as they were joining NATO with a conflict zone (the north)
But Ireland can't joint NATO because we had a conflict with a current member and constitutionally decided to give up our claim to the north?
**** makes no sense.
If the photos of the moskva are legit then it might explain the delay in the US saying it had sank? Everyone else was declaring it sank during the darkness of night during the storm
Ah you're right.
I kinda fear all those kidnapped/moved to literally concentration camps, if they don't fall in line.... what happens to them?
Seems the Russian propaganda is getting public to see Ukrainian citizens as sub-human, we've seen this before with the Nazis.
The Republic had a constitutional claim over Northern Ireland in its Constitution until 1998. It therefore refused, as a matter of policy, to sign up to any common agreement on defence until that was sorted. When NATO was being contemplated, Ireland always kinda half indicated that it would be otherwise amenable in principle to joining.
Why would you join up with a country which was, from your perspective, illegally occupying part of your territory?
Read this is you are interested:
Ireland does not have a constitutional claim to the north now, so why can't we join NATO?
Are you talking about why we didn't join NATO back after WW2 as if it is still a reason/restriction joining now?
I asked why we can't join NATO in 2022, you use a reason from 1949 as a reason why.
Clearly genuine.
Compare it to this photo of the Moskva. Look at the distinctive radar station and helipad, it's the same ship.
In the intervening time, there has been a specific Article inserted to prohibit us from accepting an EU common defence treaty. It is likely that we would need a referendum then to smooth that over or else there would be plenty of Constitutional challenges
The state shall not adopt a decision taken by the European council to establish a common defence pursuant to article 42 of the treaty on European Union where that common defence would include the State.
Even though that Article only specifies European Council.
I think that Article was put in to assuage fears for one of the European Treaties such as Lisbon or Maastrict when people were claiming it was to set up an EU army
I mean it's not the only reason. It seems unlikely that the citizens of the country would want to join, that is reason enough.
How does our involvement in the EU battlegroups come into it ?
I don't know anything about EU battlegroups. But I would have to guess that they weren't set up via a common defence treaty under whatever Article 42 of the EU rules say.
We can still send soldiers anywhere. Once the Dail agrees. We just can't declare war unilaterally on another nation.
EU Battlegroup (EU BG)[1] is a military unit adhering to the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) of the European Union (EU). Often based on contributions from a coalition of member states, each of the eighteen Battlegroups consists of a battalion-sized force reinforced with combat support elements (1,500 troops).[2][3] Two of the battlegroups were declared to be capable of being assembled for operational deployment at any one time.
Have we all missed something ?
I'm inclined to agree. I think a good case could be made that he should go on trial but realistically....
russian tank explodes
You're going to have to look it up and figure out where the conflict is between our Constitution and the rules where these battlegroups were formed. As I said, I'm not aware of them. But I assume that, if we participate, that they are not included in whatever in under the EU Article 42.
Ireland always sent plenty of soldiers off on UN missions.
Many US commentators (not just this guy) are strongly pushing for more action, I would say it's intended to get the US public onside

Russia showed its power here to resist western economic warfare. Cant bully a big nation like you can do with a small one. Fascinating here is Russia turned the tables around and asked countries to pay for fuel with rubbles. Undermines the petrodollar, which keeps the United States afloat.
Russian propaganda forums are over there to the east, conspiracy forum round the corner
