Things getting nasty in the east of Ukraine.
This one could go on for a while with the same atrocities we’ve seen the last few days.
Not good.
Sanctions, yes, I agree we should be willing to go far on those and I think many are, but plenty aren't too. You're already seeing political anger about energy prices, so I would wonder if there's a willingness to hold the line at all. I'm not necessarily talking about Ireland, but there are certainly some angrier electorates around that aren't showing that much appetite for solidarity beyond flag waving.
I am seeing Ireland taking a long time to figure out what to do with that alumina plant for example. We probably should be moving on that, but we haven't done so far and it could have big impact, but it might also mean a loss of jobs in the midwest which will have inevitable political blowback.
Will the state step in there and prop up or even potentially nationalise what is already a very fading industry?
There are a loads of situations like that where far away issues will have to be faced close to home and suddenly it's not just on the TV. That's where I would be concerned about limitations of sanctions.
You also have to wonder about how big an impact those sanctions are really having if Russia just side steps them through China and India etc..
I don't think there's anything fundamentally stopping individual EU members from sending whatever they want to Ukraine.
Estonia for example has just sent artillery (https://mil.in.ua/en/news/officially-estonia-has-sent-122-mm-howitzers-to-ukraine/); which nobody else has been willing to send.
And Chechia has reportedly sent tanks and infantry fighting vehicles (https://www.todayonline.com/world/czech-republic-sends-tanks-infantry-fighting-vehicles-ukraine-source-1865126).
I think the only tricky part is that certain military hardware would have been purchased from some third party; and often purchase agreements contain clauses which prevent further export without the seller's consent. So for e.g. Germany had to approve sending certain items from Estonia and Chechia.
mistreating Russian prisoners is only going to increase the chance of further atrocities against children and civilians
Did you miss the part where they've been doing this since they started attacking Ukraine??? They don't need any encouragement or reason, it's part of their mission
You really don't see that you provoked such comments and discussion with your unconfirmed video? Why did you do that? Are you a WUM?
you can't seem to even comprehend the fact that mistreating Russian prisoners is only going to increase the chance of further atrocities against children and civilians.
I can easily comprehend things, only I don't want to establish your false claim that Ukrainians mistreat Russian prisoners, what you just did in this sentence and at the same time accused Ukrainians of further consequences of your false claim. You have no proof of it.
And you are right. I don't want to address your false claims because I don't want to confirm them as true by discussing them.
Posting videos from unreliable sources is not helping and I really start thinking that you are doing it intentionally....
Hence why I said "increase the chance of further atrocities".
Jesus wept; at least take a second to try and understand what it is you're replying to.
I couldn't give a flying **** if you think I'm doing anything intentionally or not quite honestly. But if you want to suggest I'm pro-Putin or support Russia you can go **** yourself.
I posted a video to discuss the potential consequences of Russia's actions in Bucha on the ground; and to just share a video that was being circulated about supposed mistreatment of Russian prisoners.
If the topic of the treatment of Russian prisoners isn't appropriate for a discussion thread about the Russian invasion of Ukriane then what the **** is this thread for? So you can cry about the Polish government some more? Are we only allowed to post as long as the post clearly shows "UKRAINE AND UKRAINIANS ALWAYS GOOD" and "RUSSIA AND RUSSIANS ALWAYS BAD" without any room for any kind of discussion on any topic whatsoever?
Jaysus the whataboutery in you is strong - exactly how much worse can it get? Is not raping young girls while the mother is made to watch not the lowest form of depravity for you. Care to explain why the Russians would stop now with what they have been doing since the start?
How much are you getting paid to spread your Russian propaganda or is it all in the name of the motherland?
No, just discuss things, which happened. This war is complicated enough without your made up stories....
Thank you. I needed that laugh. It is also a very good insight to the origins of the tactics of the last six weeks.
These tanks end up in the strangest of places
This one could go on for a while.
An interesting piece I missed earlier in today's ISW assessment, not sure if already discussed here:-
"An unconfirmed Ukrainian military intelligence report suggests that Moscow could soon send the 64th Motorized Rifle Brigade of the 35th Combined Arms Army, a unit that reportedly committed war crimes in Bucha, into the fight in eastern Ukraine in the hope that guilty members of that brigade and witnesses of its war crimes are killed in combat with Ukrainian forces"
Long enough that you might have to trim your repeat post even more possibly...
There was a t34 appeared during the maiden protests in kiev ,
They are still effective as long as your not in one facing modern weapons
Right....I forgot that there actually was one country and one leader scummy enough to murder its own citizens as a stunt.
It's like calling Ireland The Free State
Interesting thread showing why Russian loses claimed by Ukraine may be more accurate than we think:-
Actually on tanks the Czechs are sending Ukrainians modernised T72 tanks and while challenging other countries to send theirs too
I'm in town in the morning on other business. I might drop by the Dáil around that time to lend support....I believe a lot of Ukrainian people plan to be in attendance outside.
I'm sure there's lot's of diplomatic pressure being put on internationally like before the Afghanistan war "You're either with us or against us". One likely problem we likely to see is a new cold war developing. We're hearing now of borders closing and transport embargos. Those countries who felt bullied and abused by the west may shift allegiances and many foreign policy chickens may come home to roost.
What do we do with countries that don't impose sanctions on Russia? Do we impose sanctions on them? Where does that lead to? A fractured disunited world and a weakened global economy. The long term fallout from this is surely going to be a lot more far reaching, disruptive and lasting than a local regional war in eastern Europe in the year 2022
Yanks are saying this could go on years.
Are you honestly trying to say that video was fake ?
What we do know for certain is Russia is invading Ukraine unprovoked and has 0 regard for children or civilians or the elderly or hospitals or theatres with giant signs outside then saying children inside.
I'm fairly certain who the bad guys are here and yes they deserve no sympathy they are literally child killers.
Not really. Calling Ireland "the Free State" usually has strong political undertones, whereas English speakers calling Ukraine, "The Ukraine" is usually just a habitual thing they picked up from older generations. I used to hear auld lads refer to Cameroon as "The Cameroon" as well.
There was a program on RTE about 10.30 pm on 31/03 about this.
It might be on their play back online.
Putin's Road to war is the name of it. Directed by Michael kirk.
I don't know. Do you? Do you know the context?
I only tried to say, that posts you are answering to might be a provocation. That's all.
Anyway this initial post with videos and the discussion that followed did more harm than good in my opinion.
Harm to who ? I know that video is real without a doubt. There are fake vids and real ones and that is most certainly real.
Context you can argue but again it looks real and there is no harm in discussing things about Russian vs Ukraine in this thread that's what it's for.
