Steven Spielberg's West Side Story and Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog were the standout champions on the movies side, with the former winning Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Supporting Actress (Ariana DeBose), and Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical (Rachel Zegler), and the latter scoring Best Picture (Drama), Best Supporting Actor (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Best Director for Campion's work.
We'll see the most banal boring comedic presenter next year then.....
The Oscars may decide to take that Oscar off him to make an example of it
Very strange seeing Will Smith smiling away now live on Sky News while Jada has a face like thunder. She was very vocal a few years back about so few poc getting nominated and she boycotted the awards. I wonder will he be asked to give the Oscar back.
From what they are showing on sky news It looks like will Smith was relaxed, laughing away at the joke until the wife gave him hell and then (and only then) he ran up to the stage and hit Chris rock.
Fair play to anyone that watches this tripe, these people live in a bubble.
Will a bad boy, Jada rules that relationship
Poor Lupita sitting next to them
I think you are being melodramatic there.
He lost his temper. Nothing there was “unhinged”.
I accept this of course but I've listened back, there's a reference to GI Joe and far as I can see the joke was tame in comparison to previous Jibes on this and similar shows.
If I recall, will Smith certainly wouldn't be up for husband of the year and there's a stench of hypocrisy here.
Clearly a very Angry man and I hear his acceptance speech was a little unhinged also.
A compete and quite disturbing over reaction
GI Jane....GI Joe wouldnt make much sense.
It was a tame joke, not exactly a hot take....bizarre reaction will seriously damage him.
The optics of this are dreadful for will Smith
He should have kept the head and realised he could say something in interview or at the podium if he won. Like how presenting is the nearest Rock would ever get to an award or something else cutting.
more kept the smack for backstage
but sure movie stars are people like the rest of us.
it was a nasty thing to say - my guess is that the producers will not allow personal remarks like that in future
A deeply unhinged individual.
So that happened...
I mean, it's not that tame... it's mocking her for having an illness... It's a tame joke if she had chosen to be bald, but she didn't. (obviously still doesn't call for that reaction though).
Was wondering if that was Rock's own joke, or if there was a writer back stage shītting himself after it 😅
Would have thought their material would at least be vetted though.
Always something a bit weird about him
Most people
How is what Will Smith did the same as what Kevin Spacey did?
I really do believe it was a complete over reaction
It's a pretty classless joke tbh. Pinkett-Smith has been very open about her alopecia. It would be different if she had just got a short hair cut. Would Rock have made the same joke if she was recovering from cancer? Nope. Would someone have made a joke at the Oscars about Chris Reeves in a wheelchair? Nope. Pretty simple and universal rule that you don't take the piss out of peoples' appearance when they have an illness.
Also not the first time that Rock has taken a pop at her from the Oscars stage, despite her not exactly being an A-list or high-profile actor. Possibly some history there that Rock is sore about.
Smith losing the head doesn't reflect well on him, but Rock totally deserved a smack.
What happened in 2017 ?
I googled it and there is stories about propel walking out of a French awards ceremony when Polanski won but nothing about the Oscars
And that's my own take on him, very disturbing.
I disagree, the assault was bad enough but the follow up rant suggests he's certainly a very angry person.
Ah I dunno now.
Better ways to get even than running up on stage like a lunatic and slapping him
especially on the night you are given best actor at the oscars ffs like
time and a place - WS should’ve made some comment during his acceptance speech and then get even with Chris rock behind the scenes at a time of his choosing not in front of millions on live tv
They must be praying for Ricky Gervais to come back.
Was he ever offered the Oscar hosting gig, he was great at the Globes
My point being around more of a general cancelling if modern society turns against someone. The film world doesn't want negative controversy, so if this story develops along those lines, may we see a shift away from Will Smith as an A lister? Initial reaction appears to be critical of him, it's a violent act, but I can see him and his wife turning this into more about them and some good old PR kicking in. What next for the Smiths, a Harry and Meghan type interview with Oprah?
He got angry.
That doesn’t mean he is an “angry person”.
Because he is famous and it happened on live TV doesn’t mean he has mental health issues.
when you get angry about about some thing or lose your temper it doesn’t mean you are an angry person or unhinged
I always feel when someone is OTT on every talk show, craving centre stage for all the attention as the "funniest nicest guy in the world" , there may be another "real" side to this person. May be he let the mask slip a bit last night. Like others have said, he could have dealt much better with this with words.
Smith 100% in the wrong but as people have said his missus had a hand in it. It looked like he felt if he didn't do something there'd be hell to pay later.
Smith needs to do a "Stu" from The Hangover:
Forgive my absolute ignorance, but I did not realise that there was a difference between those awards 😬
Deserved, wow, it was a classless joke whether or not Rock knew about her condition but the reaction is lower again.
If he wanted to take the high ground, the 2 of them should have left the building and explained to the press why at a later stage.
