A bit of criticism was being leveled at Leroy Merlin on France24 last night, because they owned that shopping centre that was spectacularly destroyed 2 days ago so the company was effectively paying Russia to destroy it's own store and to kill several of it's own employees, who were some of the victims.
Yes, people in Kyiv have been saying that the city has been surprisingly quiet and calm for the last few days (apart from that missile attack on the shopping mall).
It looks like the east and south will be the new focus for the Kremlin forces.
absolutely,
they need them plus rifles, machine guns and ammunition
There seems to be a disturbingly large gap between the assistance promised to Ukraine and that which is actually being delivered.
The American stuff should be arriving, but the Euro countries need to buck up their game and get that kit over there fast. Very crucial time right now.
Ireland is NOT neutral
Send them weapons, the more the merrier. The more the less Russian murderers and rapists roaming their lands
Thinking the same. They've just blow up a bridge between Chernihiv and Kyiv which firstly makes it more difficult for the Ukrainians to resupply the city and secondly would pose difficulties for themselves if they wish to progress south west to Kyiv.
Yes, any agreement outside of full withdrawal to pre invasion locations will not have 100% backing on the Ukrainian side. Look what happened Ireland in the 1921. Even pre-invasion locations such as Crimea probably still won't have 100% support but the vocal minority will be more minor.
Certain western countries happy to help Ukraine bleed Russia but don't want them to drive Russia out.
I can't see Ukraine agreeing to lose any territory, their country is already flattened so I'd imagine they'd take the fight to Russia and try and take back Crimea and the East. This will continue for months at this rate.
That's what I was thinking, it's a similar situation to us back in the 1920's.
Not 100%. Look at current Poland. Far right extremists are officially setting organised groups and are even subsidised now with public money and rising their ugly heads. And it is happening in a democratic (yet) country.
A friend of the OH is Ukranian. He sister arrived in Ireland from Ukraine, from the South East, and the stories ( and I must stress, unconfirmed stories) she is telling are shocking. She is saying that multiple women, all mostly over 50, in her village/ town, have been raped by RU forces. Plus her Aunt had a visit from Russian soldiers who were looking for alcohol, specifically a drink similar to poitin. She got the drinks together and then asked that the soldiers drink them in the shed outside instead of the house. They agreed. When they were all in the shed, she locked the door from the outside and set the shed on fire, killing all 4. Now, my jaw was on the floor listening to this, but listening to the pure hatred in the woman's voice ( she was basically spitting her words), I found it difficult not to believe the accounts.
Thank you for your service Auntie!
I’m sure we can just give them to the Brits or French or poles and they can do what they like with them then and we aren’t breaking our neutrality . It doesn’t need to be a big publicised gesture.
Looks like they are running on dirty diesel....
goodbye iPhone, goodbye sugar
That's all it would be, a gesture. It's not like we have the stocks of materiel lying about in armaments stores to make any difference. We are completely insignificant in military terms.
Can't remember where I read it, but Germans gave about 25% of what they promised publicly.
Basically what I would like to see done with the Russian embassy.
50 or 100 javelins whatever we have would take many multiples of that in Russian tanks. Why leave them gathering dust in the curragh.
Looks like previous reports of Russian encirclement of Ukrainians is going full circle:-
Hi from Germany. If you have something, send it! Don't be a stingy bastard.
If we can do it, you can do it.
I believe Russian soldiers have a history of getting quite rapey during war time. Lots of German women were raped once the Russians conquered. I honestly find it hard to believe because as brutal as the Russians can be, they're not quite ISIS material and I don't think the average Russian soldier would be into such crimes.
It would appear all is not rosy in healthcare in Russia:-
Ukrainian pm said on Sky news they have good stocks of weapons but not enough long range. Reports of what they have are to be taken with a pinch of salt because they are probably trying to mislead the Russians as to what they have.
Youtube has become the new training manuals in combat:-
We've just been to an arms depot in Kyiv. Juri says: "The German anti-tank weapons are as easy to operate as a German Volkswagen, we watch YouTube videos beforehand. We need more of it to defend ourselves."
Ireland is militarily neutral as I'm sure you're well aware; and providing offensive weapons is not consistent with that policy.
If you really think we should help with more military aid then let's empty out our stores of protective equipment, gas masks, field medical kits, body armour, ballistic shields, and so on and ship them over.
Until Ireland as a nation decides to abandon a policy of military neutrality we're not going to be sending weapons; and I don't really see why we should abandon that policy just to send Ukraine a handful of weapons of a type they already have and continue to receive in abundance.
