They Lost 10 in one day and seem to be averaging 2-3 aircraft shoot downs per day,as well as helicopters I'd say figures are pretty close ,I reckoned it as around 50 by around 1am this morning
I watched both that and its American counterpart, Testament. My takeaway is that feature length films on nuclear holocaust are a slog because they don't have anywhere to go. I would suggest The War Game as a more succinct warning. It's 17 minutes in total, I think, but here's a minute long excerpt. Nothing like that old RP voice to really put across the cold reality of a situation...
Again, nuclear weapons are a deterrent. The other guy needs to believe you will use them in retaliation so he doesn't use them first. If we haven't the will to use them in retaliation then we might as well not have them and just let Vlad take nuclear pot shots at us. We might not like this situation, we certainly don't want it's logical conclusion, but that's how it is. Vlad needs to know the West will retaliate.
Of course it appears Vlad has a god complex and believes the world can't live without him, so it's not like we're dealing with your regular megalomaniac psychopathic nutjob. Nonetheless, the logic still applies.
Note in the above "we" = the West, mainly EU / UK / US I suppose
Any early optimism I had that this could be over in a matter of weeks is fading fast.
The European Union is set to unveil a plan as soon as this week to jointly issue bonds on a potentially massive scale to finance energy and defense spending as the bloc copes with the fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Who will they be paying the energy for?
Yes I think we are in for some pretty big changes. One positive (out of this horror-show) could be a much stronger push towards renewable energy sources
And people might understand the benefits of being food secure too. Brexit Britain was all in favour of importing food from Australia or wherever - it was another argument for quitting the EU.
We are getting closer and closer to NATO been involved, they are absolutely pushing the boundaries of been in direct conflict with Russia. It will be a big question mark over Putin, will he react if Poland send jets to the Ukraine. If he doesn't respond, he will look weak and it could be the signal for NATO to push into the Ukraine.
Not sure I understand the question, but this is from the article:
The invasion has forced the bloc to rethink its most basic energy needs, as more than 40% of EU gas imports and one quarter of its oil come from Russia. On Monday, Moscow threatened to cut gas supplies to Europe via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline. But as the EU transitions away from Russian gas, it will have to turn to other, more expensive, sources.
While the bloc can still boost imports of liquefied natural gas from countries such as the U.S., such purchases will be more expensive. And refilling storage to an average level will be challenging due to soaring prices: The price tag could reach 70 billion euros compared with 10 billion in previous years, according to a report by Belgian-based think tank Bruegel.
The last tiome the Brits said they would stand with Poland, they lost over 5 million of their population, had their country moved Westwards and spent 46 years living under ruthless Soviet occupation.
Can anyone imagine any of our politicians doing likewise ?
Bs
I presume you mean weeks let alone months
I heard lat last night that 30 helicopters were destroyed in Kherson. I didn't post. I didn't believe it was true, It wasn't true it was 45 helicopters destroyed at the airport when Ukrainian solders took it back from the evil aggressor. Still not 100% convinced.
Tweet: Is from Ukraine’s Ambassador to Austria (2014-2021)
NATO is not an offensive force, it is defensive. Ukraine is not a part of NATO. The only way NATO and Russia will go head-to-head is if Russia strikes against NATO. Russia is not stupid, they will not engage NATO if they don't have to. Same applies for NATO.
This will remain a proxy war for NATO
Are they going to subsidise consumers by reducing VAT etc?
And a transition to a crisis/war time economy willl save manufacturing and renew focus on food security. There are always positives, even in the darkest times. I just hope we (as in Europe) don't lose ourselves and our values on the the path to er... 'victory'.
And while the response to the pandemic showed that people are, in the main, remarkably flexible and considerate there is a rump of people that will resist change as a matter of principle.
Weather may play a part in the Kyiv bound convoys progress, getting extremely cold there from tomorrow until Sunday .
I know that, which is why I am saying Putin will look weak if he doesn't react to Poland sending jets to Ukraine. Poland is part of NATO so would trigger a joint effort from NATO if they were attacked. We would see then how far Putin really would go.
They are defensive but they offensively intervened in Kosovo.
My first thought was 'balls' this will make the ground harder, allowing their tanks to travel on, but reading that article it seems the Russians may be having their own Napoleon/Nazi invasion problems.
A Russian fighter-bomber strayed close to, or ever so slightly inside, Turkish airspace in 2015. They sent up a couple of F-16s and blew it out of the sky, leading to the deaths of one of the pilots and one marine sent to rescue them. Russia's response was to ban some Turkish imports and stamp up and down. No nukes were launched.
They'll be using horse and carts in a few weeks at this rate.
Great morale boost for the Ukrainian effort there.
Cato Putin is all over the place with his demands. I think that he is throwing things out that comes into his head. IMO I think that muddling up his demands is a sideshow - as long as he he keeps bombing he is happy. For example , is it not a contradiction that he does not want Uk never to join NATO or the EU but did not add in CSTP membership also
. also , he wants to wants to reinvent the USSR again BUT with the oligarchs in place which would be an out and out contradiction
Lol, I said credible and independent doofus!

Did you not get a twinge of sadness in your soul posting that knowing you are unironically peddling propaganda?
A reminder about Russia's key ally in all this
Yanukovych bolted for Russia after over 100 protestors were murdered in the streets by the Kremlin sponsored Berkut and articles of impeachment were instituted. He was removed from the presidency following parliamentary assent congruent to the Ukrainian constitution having abandoned his office and fled the country.
Do you feel any shame in your heart posting disinformation? Where did your life take this wrong turn?
The claim there was a "coup" in Ukraine in 2014 is Nazi level propaganda.
There was no coup.
Yanukovych ordered mass murder and was impeached on a 328-0 vote by the Ukrainian parliament.
When posters claim a "coup" that never happened, just remember on whose side they are on.
They are on the side of the mass murderer.
Imagine, in some parallel universe, a Taoiseach ordering the Irish Army to slaughter a hundred people on the streets of Dublin. And posters here defending them. That's what we're dealing with with the "coup" conspiracists.
Yes, I've seen 'The War Game'. It's very good too. I think 'Threads' is the better representation though, as it has a less old timey Auntie Beeb feel to it. BTW, 'The War Game' was effectively banned for years. I remember when it was released on DVD in the early 00's.
Are you Rintaro Okabe?!
Seriously though, all those things are hypothetical. There's no actual hard evidence of these phenomona actually occuring, so I'd say a nuclear war is much, much more likely than what Martin Rees suggested in his book. The overall topic of which is doomsday scenarios, I might add. It's not like he studied the LHC and raised a red flag with how it is operating, he looked at it in the context of world ending events.
We'll survive but people need to be prepared for some big changes.
I can't remember if it was this thread I banged on about it before but even if you go back to 2007, things have been remarkably stable til recently. Food was already cheap and got stupid cheap. You can earn enough on minimum wage in 3 or 4 hours to feed yourself very well for a week but you'll need to work 3 days to rent a place yourself could use 80+% of minimum wage. The "most vulnerable" in society and the people who have bought have been insulated from the massive increases in cost of living that have come from rents in the last 3-4 years. Consumer electronics are stupidly cheap. You can order something on Amazon now and have it 36 hours later. It might only cost a fiver but some guy will drop it to your door.
There's been inflationary pressure building since before Covid. Covid unleashed a bit of it but then created more with shortages and supply chain issues. The constant call from chipmakers was "3-6 months" but now it's a couple of years. Fuel has jumped, food would jump due to this and will far moreso with fuel price increase. I really think inflation is just getting started (wouldn't be surprised if it touches double digits in some places) meanwhile the Central banks are still giving money out at 0 cost.
We'll survive and things will still be pretty good but I think we could be entering into a restructuring of how the "everyday" economy plays out for a lot of people.
Effect of sanctions beginning to hit Russia. Or not.
