What’s the point, this thread is about a vicious and unprovoked invasion of a sovereign nation. There is no moral argument that justifies that so why can’t we stick to its significance and fallout?
Whatever about the army and weapons they have now I can only imagine what they'll have once they rid themselves of the russians. They'll move from 22nd largest army to 7th or 8th. Their army reserve will number in the millions. Their hardware will be all Eurpean and American. Russia will never come near them again, NATO or no NATO.

I think the simplest way to think about it is that too much negativity is generally bad for the human psyche and the modern world has inadvertently made that negativity something that can be accessed with increasing ease.

Many analysts have suggested it may be impossible for Russia to 'hold' Ukraine. Even if they were to enter Kyiv and temporarily raise the Russian flag over the city, how on earth can they subjugate a nation of 44m people which hates them?
Fair enough. But you can see how that would look to those who actually experienced it in real life. I mean, there's a difference between the trauma experienced by survivors of real wars and someone getting PTSD from watching 'Full metal jacket'

An Italian male travelled from France with his 40 year old grand piano.
He set up a few meters from the border fence and started playing, when asked why he had done this, his reply was, he had nothing to offer to help but his music.
Surreal to see the constant flow of Ukrainian women and children walking in the queue behind him.
When there is a lull between sirens from emergency services I can here the piano from my house.

That's a very bleak assessment for the short and medium term for Ukraine.
Anyone that pushes the big red nuke buttons would know they are likely to be ending their own and their families lives too. Russia is more than one man, they will finish Putin before they pull the plug on the nation itself. He may be popular but he does not have a cult mentality where the identity of the state is transferred to a single person, as in Germany and Italy among others.
It is perfectly valid to compare and contrast previous precedents with ongoing events and the comparison of America's actions in Iraq stand as a valid talking point when it's stacked up against Russia's actions against the Ukraine. This is especially so when the current conflict is used by certain parties to take moral high grounds on behalf of nations whose own very recent history is littered with nefarious activities.
However...there are also bad faith contributors that will use such things to score cheap talking points, or provide simplistic excuses, or drag a topic off of the salient issue. So, at the end of the day, it's probably best avoided.

Vicarious trauma is a recognized issue.
The most extreme example of trauma being shared through modern media was 9/11, the majority of people who watched it live were nowhere near it geographically but were aware of it happening live in front of their eyes, the imagery was one thing but the understanding of the consequences also made it a traumatic event for those not present to experience the full horror of it.
Modern rolling news services have changed how traumatic events are understood. In WW2 it took time for events to be communicated to the rest of the world, nowadays its instantaneous. There's some merit to what the poster is saying.
I understand the temptation to roll our eyes and jokingly talk about "thoughts and prayers" as the true meaning of such statements has been watered down to a point where it means nothing, but there is an affect on the psyche from exposing oneself to constant bad news even if it seems trivial when measured against the loved experiences of those on the ground living the event in real time.
We all want to be up to speed at a times in these situations, but maybe there's something to be said for getting out heads out of that space from time to time.
