Yes we will be given a quota similar to every other EU country. It will depend on the number of refugees and the relevant population per EU country.

I'm sure Putin is banking on this fact and the extreme strains it puts on any nation. In the last few years alone Europe has been the vent valve for Iraq, Syria, lybia and now Ukraine. The countries who started the conflicts were in the main unaffected.

Do people calling for a no fly zone have any idea of the risks involved, NATO shooting down Russian aircrafts...puts them in direct conflict with Russia, a country with a power mad, cornered dictator with the largest arsenal of nuclear weapons in the world, it just can't be done.
A lot of people, including me, thought that this might not end with Ukraine, that he might decide to push on to other countries...but I'm starting to question if they are actually capable of that, Ukraine is taking all their effort, it's not going well and has been rife with problems.
When and if they take Ukraine they'll have to keep it, it's going to take time and serious effort and time isn't something on Russia's side now, sanctions are starting to hurt, the effort is crippling them and it only going to get worse the longer it takes.
Heavy losses, tanking economy, logistical problems...long term it looks to me like they're digging their own grave.
Putin has said the sanctions on Russia are akin to a declaration of war. He also says any attempt to implement a no fly zone over Ukraine will be deemed active participation by those countries.
Catherine Connolly also mentioned that 60 people died in January alone trying to get into Europe from Syria and other poor or war torn countries. The flood of refugees from these countries has not stopped.

But we don't have a surplus of housing to take in anywhere near that number ,not even close and if anything a warm welcome would quickly turn cold when people want to know why they are left homeless but Ukrainians are given homes . I'd welcome small numbers of Ukrainan families but not in those figures

Everybody is aware of how unreliable Russian reports are. That's a given. Most people are suffering from a bizarre logical fallacy whereby they say "Russian media is full of propaganda, therefore Ukrainian media is reliable". It points to a serious problem in critical faculties, people who are only capable of understanding a conflict by applying opposite attributes to either side.

The West should try and hold their nerve here. The longer this war drags on, the more it seriously damages Putin and risks him losing credibility and face in Russia. A no fly zone would suit him and he could pitch it that NATO is planning on invading Russia.
Although it's not worth the risk, I actually don't see Putin reaching for the nukes if NATO engages in Ukraine. As long as NATO does not bomb Russian territory, I think he would engage NATO in Ukraine.
I don't see the chain of command agreeing to nuke Paris and Berlin because NATO forces took out Russian tanks and planes in Ukraine.
Not worth the risk though, so I'd stay clear. Ukrainians are doing great and Putin has lost this war. I don't think it's even up for debate now.
That doesn't mean that the big boys will come to the table Immediately. You'll see alot of analysis and risk assessment before that happens.
Pointless gesture tbh. You either see it as a humanitarian crisis or not, a feel good story on RTE news of a few families being housed would just be disingenuous. I don't know what the solution is given the capacity but this token gesture isn't it.
Essentially it's just a piece of paper. I do not believe the Americans or British will come to the Baltic's aid if they were invaded. I think Poland will, I'm not sure on Germany.
Indeed, two more weeks of this and it will be starting to dawn even on the Russian public that the invasion is going very badly and that Putin has messed up. Time is on Ukraine and the West's side and not on Putin's.
Because this is a thread about Russia, and the biggest story to do with Russia is the brutal war they're waging in Ukraine. If you want to talk about geopolitical hypocrisies or hypocrisy in the media, why not start a thread about it rather than trying to sidetrack this one?
That then leaves the doors open for conventional war between the two and the risk of one being used only heightens as something like that goes on.

I dont think so, like we seen in Ukraine it took quite a while for Russia to build up forces on the border before the invasion. US seemed to be pretty spot on with the intelligence about it all.
Now if say Russia starts the same trick on the border of a NATO country, I would have no doubt that NATO would immediately respond by bolstering up defences and sending troops in to reinforce it.
In essence any attempted attack would be doomed to fail before it even gets started. Hence why it wont happen.
I wont comment on his appearance other than to say that I was surprised that an elite fighting force has someone that's clearly obese in its active fighting ranks.
Italy defaulted from its triple alliance in WWI, with Germany, Hungary and Austria. They essentially had a NATO-type agreement. When war broke out in 1914, technically Italy should have sided with the triple alliance. But they decided not to. And then as the war progressed and the winds blew in the other direction, they changed their alliances completely and sided with the triple entente- France, U.K. and Russia.
Basically, there is historical precedence for countries putting their own national interests first and not partaking in their military defence agreements

I agree, more than likely nukes will only be used if NATO invade Russia itself. But like you said it is definitely not worth the risk testing that theory out.
