Food for thought alright
There are many solutions to tackle the SUV problem, which will need bold action from policymakers. These solutions – taxation, education and exclusion – have parallels with the successful campaign against cigarette smoking.
Unless your car has been lowered, all you have to do is take your foot off the brake and/or gently accelerate over speed bumps and you won't scrape your bumper off the ground. It's amazing how many people don't realise the effect braking has on weight distribution and ride height.
SUVs have no more clearance than saloons or regular hatchbacks, so your theory is nonsense.
Having spent years working on many SUVs, I can assure you, they do not clear speed bumps. Not a solid undertray or clean sump to be seen.
As for the boy racer comment; lol
Height affects centre of gravity: a tall vehicle will have centre of gravity higher up, which will negatively affect dynamics and handling.
For an SUV to have the same level of handling of a lower saloon or estate it will need a much firmer suspension, so it will be more uncomfortable. Or else, for an SUV to have a comfortable suspension with same level of smoothness of a saloon or estate, its handling will be worse.
Cannot deny laws of physics unfortunately, this is why I prefer a saloon or an estate for city or paved road use instead of an SUV.
I don't think anybody in the thread can agree what contitutes an SUV so this thread will go on forever
This thread, and the context of the discussions about the dimensions of SUVs in it, is about whether SUVs should be barred or restricted from the roads or not. The handling characteristics are hardly a reason to ban or restrict them.
Yeah, that’s a fair point. I guess that’s one of the problems. SUV can mean anything from a Fiat Panda Cross to a LWB Land Rover. The category is too large and broad to be meaningful outside of marketing, which makes generalisations about their characteristics, drivers or ethics meaningless.
You obviously are clueless about SUV’s, I had a Yaris before I bought a suv. The Yaris did 45mpg the suv does 50-56 mpg I wonder which is more environmentally friendly?
Are you for real?
Do you know the difference between an SUV and an SUV crossover? Obviously not.
Calm down Dan, take a cruise in your Tucson Jaysus
Take it easy Gant just Google the difference of SUV and SUV crossover before you post a rant 😀😀😀
Jeasus threads like this remind me how common bitterness towards other Irish people having better things is.
Don't get me started on the idiot's who wrote the article
Their larger size and elevated chassis which make them more comfortable to drive increases the "blind zone", making streets less safe for other road users, especially children
Pure boloxoligy, written by people who only have opinions, not expertise on a subject, and subsequently ran with by RTE.
Station wagon FTW
Never let a bimmer or Merc out from a side road on principal
Can we please get you started on this as its indisputably true. Your quote even includes a link to a paper... with data not opinions.... written by people with expertise on the subject.
Please get started.
your use of the word 'better' is interesting.
an SUV is not 'better' than any other car simply due to being an SUV.
Only want ranting is yourself. Don’t be a plonker all your life.
Took a lot less resources to make the Yaris. I assume the Yaris is petrol and the SUV diesel. Then you've smaller tyres on the Yaris which will last longer and tyres are very eco unfriendly.
That's assuming the mpg is accurate as well. Also depends how much mileage you are doing. Which is more reliable, needs less parts. Those Yaris seem to last forever. I wonder will that be true of modern cars with more electronics.
"What's more, the Yaris is the most efficient car we've ever put through our scientific True MPG test, averaging a whisker under 60mpg and managing an astonishing 80mpg around town. That makes even a Honda Jazz look thirsty."
in short, comparing an older car with a newer one is not a fair comparison.
Maybe people "...you know..." don't actually slow down....hence the problem. :)
Yes maybe.
First off...I hate SUVs. Just don't get them qnd think it's a way for manufacturers to charge Mondeo money for focus spec and fit out levels. But I don't see how they are seen as environmentally unfriendly as a group on their own. My workmates drive Qashqais, rav4 etc and despite being SUVs are more fuel efficient and probably lighter than my big Audi saloon that doesn't get the same bad press.
what's the engine sizes in the various cars?
SUV stands for sports utility vehicle. Very few of the so called SUVs we see in urban areas aren’t really fit for that purpose & most definitely never are used in that capacity.
IDC about driving around them on the motor way or even on a dual carriage, but ffs, I can not stand being stuck amongst them in the city.
I think they should tax them based on weight.
Visibility, in a "standard" car you simply can not see at a junction when an SUV is beside, so you have to creep forward to see, curiously the SUV drivers seem to insist on moving forward to block your view, despite them being able to easily see over your low bonnet / roof.
Market demand is what decide what manufacturers make it in cars. SUV's are in demand do they are made. Most modern SUV's are really only a crossover from s saloon car.
As you get older it gets harder to get in and out of saloons. What drove SUV's was that manufacturers were actually dropping the driving position if saloon cars from the early noughties on. Nissan brought out the Qashqai and it became extremely popular in a short time. It drove the market as it was followed by the Hyundai IX35.
I drive a Toyota RAV myself. 2010 2.2L. great yoke. 4wd button will go a lit of places an ordinary car will not
The qashqai are 1.2 petrol and 1.5 diesels. The rav4 is a 2.5 petrol hybrid. My audi is a 2 litre diesel and uses as much or more fuel than all the above
We simply copied US fashion, which was copied here at the high end then trickled down to everyone. It's a fashion trend not a practicality one.
In the US they get ridiculed for not having decent off road ability and being on road tires.
The reason the manufacturers are keen on them is they have a higher profit margin then regular cars.
No one's sees large diesel Audi's as eco friendly. There's as many memes about them as SUVs.
I think we should ban all cars on the roads, ban bicycles because of the emissions produced generating metal.
Instead the government should give everyone a recyclable bicycle made from cardboard that you can only use when it's not raining and even at that not everyone will be happy because people cycling up a hill under pressure will release to much gas by farting which is bad for the environment.
All this while they declare gas a renewable energy, ignore nuclear and turn a blind eye to large industries as they create jobs.
Now Where did I park my hummer.... that's what you call a real SUV not like those toy SUV's everyone is talking about on this thread.
