Modern movie recommendations from folks who think modern movies aren’t good

I got into movies in the 90s, loving movies from 70s to 90s, I got out of movies gradually from 2000 on as movies from that point on became less appealing to me.

if you think modern acclaimed movies are mainly very good then good for you but I’d rather hear from those who are similar to me in their movie outlook.

what modern movies from 2005 on really stood up to the best movies from previous decades?

To give my slant on what movies from 2005 on are really great I would say

No country for old men

Snowtown

Whiplash

Zodiac

the fighter

the wrestler

there are a few apart from that like Inglorious basterds, American Gangster, Drive, phantom thread, hell or High water , we need to talk about Kevin, wedding crashers that are very entertaining.

I’ll edit in more if I can think of any.

I can think of a lot more, those are just of the top of my head. I think there have been some brilliant films since 2005, they might not have got the releases or be in the English language or been big Hollywood films though.

Some of those I’d class as decent movies, some I haven’t seen but id know my taste well enough to know Volver is unlikely to be a winner for me. Some I didn’t get the fuss about at all like Let the right one in and Arrival.

I should defo watch the Prophet though.

Definitely will second No Country for Old Men. It really is a classic just released in recent times. Run time is 2hr 2 min and you will be checking your clock thinking it's all over in an hour and a half. Fantastic storyline with no padding and great performances from every actor.

Well if you aren't into volver and you want something different from Almodovar the skin I live in is excellent.

More recent ones Raw and Petite Maman (an absolute gem and only 70 odd minutes)

The Departed, 2006, really takes you back to an early Nineties style of movie with the feel of Goodfellas, State of Grace or Donnie Brasco, enthralling New York Gangland.

With Scorcese directing Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Leonardo Dicaprio on top form accompanied by a fine soundtrack by Howard Shore it is a rollercoaster.

It was fine, a lot way short of the Goodfellas, Casino, Carlitos way, Donnie Brasco. IMO

Mud from 2012 really blew me away. Matthew McConaghey puts in a fine lead performance but the camera work and style of the movie was really something else. Might have been one of the first movies I watched in modern 'hd' but it really was a beautifully shot movie.
