What would an average return or an average expected return for an investment in Ireland?

I know they obviously vary from investment to investment but is there a general rule of thumb?

Say for arguments sake somebody invests 40k over 5 years? If after 5 years they finished with 45k for arguments sake, would that be seen as being a decent return?

The S&P 500 returns about 10% annually. So you should look into ETFs, but the tax rate on realised gains is 41%.

Risk and time are the two big determinants when discussing returns on investments. I think the more details you provide about your potential investment, the better the answers you are likely to elicit from the good folks on Boards-Investments

ETFs are the easiest thing to invest in, apart from Prize Bonds. Irish Life offer a range of products too.

I just looked online there. 10% seems to be seen as an average return. Then I see its 55% tax on returns.
