Thread title is "Will you be taking a booster" on a site with a .ie domain. DrFrost wants to talk about Israel.

Yes because the Irish government have explicitly said they look at the international situation when formulating policy, and even if they hadn't said that it is obvious that different countries influence each other's policies by their actions.

Israel real life data on vaccines and boosters is what has spurred other countries to do exactly the same thing. It's still a Pfizer test lab.

I'm all in favour of Ireland looking to their neighbours in Europe before looking to Israel. The need for a test when a covid cert and booster has been received is excessive.

"Hundreds of thousands of vulnerable Irish people dead" 😄 Now you're just being hysterical and ridiculous.

You must be listening to those "experts" who've been catastrophically wrong from the beginning with their fearmongering modeling, and who've continued to be wrong ever since. Start looking at the *actual* data.

Is your argument against taking boosters really going to be medical professionals in Israel advising that Covid remains an ongoing threat? What is your angle?

My post is as is, pointing out that Israel's data has been important to the rest of the world but you are free to draw whatever conclusions you like from the post. It is neither illogical nor fake news to suggest that if they go down the route of multiple boosters that other countries will not follow.

You've linked an article from March. He's not even PM anymore. If your going to try and counter someone at least have a recent link and correct information

While I'm not in agreement with Dr Frost regarding the influence or not over German politicians, we have seen throughout this pandemic that what course Israel takes tends to be followed by others in Europe. Boosters themselves first arose as a protocol in Israel and they're already talking about third rollouts. To dismiss talk of Israel in that context is more than a little dismissive and deflective.

Israel may be talking about six month health passports, France has already stated that people living or travelling to that country will not be elligible for their covid pass/health passports without a booster(from this month for those over 65, for the under 65's from February) and official vaccination status with a booster is only valid for seven months, down from nine from a few weeks ago. In France from February onward, the non boosted and completely unvaccinated will be treated essentially the same. PCR tests if they want to enter a list of premises and they're only valid for 24 hours now, when they used to be valid for 72.

I suppose now I'm talking about France, that makes me an anti vaxxer too?

I suspect the conclusions drawn will be along the lines of; if you're not slavishly following the advice of the authorities without question to save "hundreds of thousands!!!" 🙄 you're a conspiracy nut anti vaxxer.

He's hardly making the decision himself, is he. Let's be honest, policy direction will remain the same regardless of what puppet replaces him.

See Wibbs comment above re: similar moves being made elsewhere.

    Vaccines reduce transmission.

How are we still debating this!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,764 ✭✭✭✭stephenjmcd

I've read it, point is your the one on about Israel and you undermine your own point by posting articles from March and out of date information, pretty simple.

I couldn't care less to be honest about the booster debate, I'll be getting mine whenever the text comes, if someone doesn't want one that's up to them.

To cede this point means the battle\fight is lost for them.

If they were hoping for a magic bullet anti-viral then it might make some sort of sense but there isn't any other treatment to mitigate the effects of Covid coming over the horizon to save the day.

You expected me to ignore actual realities happening now in France and how that could well be a coming trend elsewhere, just as boosters did?

But I mean there is peer reviewed evidence which proves transmission is reduced in vaccinated vs unvaccinated.

I think this point is not made clear enough by the scientific community and this has allowed a presumption that transmission is unaffected by the vaccine. Which is wrong.

You cant keep a vulnerable person safe by solely getting vaccinated. Theres a good chance you will catch covid again, so whats stopping you from spreading it unknowingly to them? Nothing!

Everyone is going to get covid again and again regardless of vaccination status, the only way to stop the spread is by preemptive and regular testing. Even with vaccinations of all frontline HCWs we still have hospital acquired covid infections and outbreaks - did the vaccine protect those vulnerable people in hospital from catching covid? Did it feck

Nobody's debating that, but they only reduce it, they don't eliminate it, being vaccinated is great but it doesn't mean you can't get it or spread it, it just means you're likely to recover quicker and be infectious for a slightly shorter time.

A Manufacturer and Regulatory Authority being able to factually call it a "Vaccine" should be enough.

If it weren't a vaccine then the anti-vaxxers would be taking cases to court for misrepresentation of the product.

These are strange times we live in. If it weren't a vaccine the fight would be fought in a Court Room, not on Social Media.

surely reducing transmission of a virus which can be deadly for some people is better than not reducing transmission of that virus?

There's more recent comments by their national coronavirus czar, Salman Zarka saying vaccinations may be "every year, or even every five or six months".

I'm going to take a wild guess and say it will end up the latter 😉 Good luck with the booster anyway, genuinely.

Okay well on another thread a poster was saying they reduce transmission by 70% and then the other day on RTE.ie I saw a quote of the WHO saying they reduce transmission by 40%. (What's 30% among friends?)

Anecdotal evidence, within and outwith Ireland (e.g. Waterford), seems to show that some of the most vaccinated places have the highest transmission.

Without vaccines that give sterilising immunity, everyone will get covid.

They also potentially don't cover all strains.

Very underwhelming overall given the 'Vaccines Save' attitude taken by so many people earlier this year, including M Martin.

    Lost me???

I responded to your assertion that testing wasn't needed if you're vaccinated.

Actually there are a few in the pipeline, including new vaccines and things like nasal sprays that mitigate symptomatic disease in human trials as we speak. If and it is a big if at this stage, though it's looking somewhat optimistic, this omricon variant turns out to be extremely transmissable and much milder for the vast majority of people it will be a "vaccine" and "booster" rolled into one by outcompeting more dangerous strains worldwide using about the best vaccine drive of all, mother nature.

    What?

where did I say testing isn’t needed if your vaccinated? as in antigen testing?

I was pointing out transmission is reduced by taking the vaccines!?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,132 ✭✭✭✭is_that_so

There has never been a silver bullet although some couldn't resist suggesting this was the case with vaccines. As a public health message it wasn't entirely dishonest as it encouraged people to get jabbed. What we will see next year and beyond are more tools, including anti-virals. As others have said COVID will still be around and we will catch it but if it's the equivalent of a bad flu' we can live with that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,276 ✭✭✭growleaves

The vaccines may be somewhat effective in reducing transmission BUT to a execute a public digital lockout system and run a campaign of official disapproval/scapegoating around people who won't take them is taking the piss big time.

I’m not advocating a hate campaign but if transmission is reduced by taking the vaccine then it stands to reason people that chose not to take the vaccine spread the virus more, hence public health measures have to be applied accordingly.

By the way the elephant in the room is just how much virus is coming out of schools where kids cannot take the vaccine.

Im not sure how much virus is coming out of schools but I presume stats are all over the place on this as contact tracing has stopped in schools.
