perceived historical injustices
Cor blimey :)
You'll need accept the historical realities before you can attempt preach to those of us grounded in plain fact.
How will we ever 'unite' with the partitionists who now exclude the facts of history?
Your own source gives the figure as 60 across ALL of NI, not just Belfast, and while I'd imagine they won't all be removed by 2023, the number is falling and will continue to fall.
Viewed in isolation, that of course isn't a positive thing.....viewed in the context of what NI was like, it certainly shows great progress. Outright dismissal or disregard is certainly bad; ostrich-like head-in-the-sand acts won't get us on the pro side any closer to Unification. Overstating their import and pretending it is still 1970 is just as egregious though.
As for, 'a fair few people' not getting Ireland's Call, there's more than a fair few; like I said I don't get it myself because it is sh*te....the number who don't like it because it is sh*te vastly outnumbers the people who don't like it with, 'why should we have to tolerate it because of Rory Best'. Anyone who holds that opinion, I'd consider an absolute bell end, but it is very much a minority opinion so again, I feel that you're overstating their import with that too. No matter the country, you'll have ar*eholes with nasty views. We probably shouldn't plan the future of countries based on a small handful of people holding horrible views though.
The thing is everyone will never be united until the border is taken away, the dispute about the border will always remain until its gone.
Only once the border is removed can people finally begin to move on.
Well they practice what they preach...about others :)
Huge rugby fan here. Ireland's Call is symbolic of the inclusivity triumph rugby is. A concession worth making and for that reason, as far as I am concerned, easy listening. Doesn't bother me in the slightest, nor would a change to the anthem or flag.
The Irish flag includes all the provinces, including the Irish province of Ulster but I don't mind if its changed. Same for the anthem. "Reunited and it feels so good"?
I agree with you. The peace walls have to go, as does the sectarian education system protected by the DUP and SF, opposite sides of the same sectarian coin.
I don't lump them all in together, you don't understand that.
There is a certain kind of nationalist - the exclusionary type - that I have particular disdain for.
No explanation needed when so many are able to respond and discuss the ideas in the post.
So remove peace walls and we are good to go for a UI? All 'united' and fuzzy?
*Inventing 'hundreds of peacewalls' in a sensational post is hardly 'discussing' your nebulous ideas blanch.
Because with other SFers in the South like me, SF would be almost unstoppable, and FF would have to either jump on the SF bandwagon or admitted they are not a Republican party & make an alliance with the UUP or DUP
Agreed on what?
Spot on
I know. You can't discuss NI without bringing these alledged people who exist for defo in significant numbers, up.
I get it, you don't understand the concept of uniting the people. You have claimed in the past to having been fooled for 50 years into voting for FF and FG and only recently converted to SF. It seems you may not have understood the GFA either when you voted for it.
It is a simple enough idea, once you reflect on what it means.
So you are going to steadfastly keep this 'concept' or vision secret? Is that it?
Hmmm I suspect you dare not let the concept see the light of day...or can't because it is so utterly bizarre.
And I bet it contains a good healthy Unionist veto like all your other alternatives for blocking a border poll.
Unite the people before you united the territory???
That hardly needs any special elaboration, does it? I mean, some of it is fairly simple stuff. Get rid of the peace walls, get rid of the sectarian education system, desegregate housing, those are necessary enabling steps towards uniting the people, but the likes of SF and the other exclusionary nationalists can't seem to get on with it.
Ultimately people with your distorted world view will only discourage people on both sides of the border from voting for a united Ireland.
No reason all of that cannot happen in a UI. We could take the chance to reform education on the whole island. Take the education out of the hands of churches down here too. 'Unite' all the people in that.
As I said, your visions always seem to have a handy Unionist veto built in...all they would have to do is resist reform...and no UI.
Why wait for a united Ireland, when it can be done today? The inability of Sinn Fein to deliver on small changes like that in the North show the poverty of their thinking when it comes to a united Ireland.
Because the statelet has failed blanch. It cannot work because of partition.
By the way, were we 'dis-united' when we had segregated education here under the power swap?
Excuse doesn't wash, Francie, the power is vested in Stormont to make those changes, the failures are those of individual politicians and parties.
There you have it..Stormont has failed blanch...have a long look at what has been blocked for years in those chambers.
You know the GFA you taunt me about? Read that and see how much of it has not been implemented and then ask who is primarily blocking change and normalisation in the failed statelet. Ask those who have been deprived of rights who they blame.
We all know the answer to that and you do too but will you ever admit it?
To say that Stormont has failed, you have to be able to point to the attempts of the parties to change things. Sinn Fein and the DUP have had it in their power to change education, but they haven't. Why? Because of their inherent sectarian nature and their desire to keep people thinking like them.
Don't worry, change is coming, but it is not the change you want, of a united Ireland. Rather it is the change of the people in the middle rejecting the rancid coin of sectarianism and its two disgusting sides.
The Alliance are calling for changes in Stormont, the removal of the segregation of parties, time to listen to them, rather than swapping one set of sectarian bigots for another.
We still have segregated education here....are we sectarian?
This is a routine snide insinuation of yours about teachers and schools. I have direct family members who work as teachers north of the border, it is a nasty unfounded insinuation you are making here.
Can you point to any instances of a 'sectarian' curriculum being taught in these schools, Catholic or Protestant? Are you saying they are controlled by sectarian interests?
What are you saying? That NI's problems are solved if Catholics and Protestants go to the same school?
I can never understand why SF who promote themselves as progressives would be for peace walls and segregation..
Oh, well I know why of course. Bums on seats, on the gravy train and ministerial cars and drivers...
Solved? Maybe not 100% but if children, kids and teenagers were educated together then it would make a massive and I mean a MASSIVE dent into the sectarian attitudes and bigotry that is mainstream in the North. The differences would be seen in a generation.
Any decent right-thinking person should be for it, but then I guess you want the status quo..

So do you have any evidence of teachers or schools (Protestant or Catholic) promoting sectarian attitudes and bigotry?
There are religious schools everywhere not just in NI.
It's a cheap shot at teachers and schools IMO, they are not the cause of the problems.
While you are at it, could you supply evidence that 'sectarianism and bigotry' are 'mainstream' in the north? This is more of the 'hundreds of peace walls' sensationalism.
Francie, its not about the content of what they teach, but the segregated nature of it.
It is not good for any society that children are almost exclusively educated in separate schools due to their religion.
93% of children are educated in this way in NI. But surprise surprise you defend it.
Would you defend it if it were based on race? Say like Apartheid South Africa? Actually, you probably would as you dont like to admit you are wrong.
