Haven't had much of a root around for other stuff, but the new Gen2 Google Hubs are reduced from €99.99 to €69.99

(They're £69.99 on the UK site)

We've a generation 1 in the kitchen and find it brilliant, so I snapped up two of these for two of my kids rooms as Santa gifts.

The newer ones have apparently even better speakers built in, and sleep trackers also.

Good price for something I've got great use out of for the last 2 years. My one gripe is that the screen is on the small side so it's a bit hard to see from a distance. Google sell the Hub Max (with a larger screen) on their UK site but don't on the Irish site for whatever reason and I think they've stopped updating the Max too which is annoying.

The Hub Max is £160 on sale in the UK store but not sure if it's worth the customs hassle or even the extra money to be honest!

I don't have this setup, but I read on here, first hand account from someone who had them said they were fantastic, they not only sorted out WiFi blackspots they had in the house, but also random disconnection issues they had, specifically with Google home cameras.

I recently changed WiFi in my house, which thankfully is problem free, otherwise I'd seriously be considering this myself.

Can I ask a stupid question? Not too tech savvy

Does the network all run with a single WiFi name? Or do the 3 nodes run with distinct names?

I bought a plug in extender (which is alright, but not great) and it has its own name. I find my phone won't switch as I move through the house, it'll stay connected to a weak signal. I was hoping the Google wifi effectively creates one large single network, rather than three separate ones which overlap. Tried searching but couldn't find anything

I have two of them they work really well. The app to control them is very good too. Easy set up a separate kids network and set time limits on particular devices.

At the price I'm tempted to get a third but I don't really need it as we have a bungalow, might be useful in the shed. I have one older model in a press in the hall in middle of the house where the Router is and one of the newer base points in the sitting room. Keep meaning to run an ethernet cable between them to really maximize their benefit. If I'm going to that bother though I should probably just run cables and fit a network switch in the attic and RJ45 sockets at the TV and my computer desk.

I dont have a google system but have another mesh system and its a one SSID (network name) for all 3 or however points you have. And if you change ISP, again the SSID stays the same so dont need to reconfigure anything

I don't know why there's such an issue with selling the Max here in Ireland. It works perfectly here, I got one in Sept. 2019 for £173 (via Google UK Store).

That's an absolute bargain even for just the Chromecast and a quality controller (though it only works wired for PC etc AFAIK).

From my limited knowledge of this, it seems that Chromecast is only useful to people who don't have a smart tv and the gaming part of the Stadia really requires a Pro account which is €10 a month, or you need to buy games individually.

Wondering if I buy this, do I need to spend more to get it working?

I’ve never had any Wi-Fi issues with this, it has been in a few locations and never had a problem connecting to the router.

I have the Nest Wifi units and a warning, you can't manually select 2.4ghz and 5ghz with the router. Can be an issue with some smart home devices only working on 2.4ghz.

Yeah this will only play on the TV with the Chromecast Ultra that is included (rather than normal Chromecast or a Smart TV).

Do you need to spend more to get it working? No, you don't need a Pro account for 10€ a month and conceivably you could just play the free games that are there if you really wanted. However you will likely buy Fifa or Call of Duty or whatever and play those instead. Usual price you pay for Xbox or Playstation.

I have had it for over a year now. I'm not a big gamer anymore but I love the flexibility of playing on the TV, or on a Laptop or Phone also. You can pause on one device and restart on another device.

Depends. We have a 4K Samsung smart tv and that doesn’t have Chromecast built in, so you have to rely on screen mirroring apps etc. and it’s all a bit too much of a faff, not to even go into the fact some apps can’t be cast that way.

€22 for a Chromecast Ultra makes absolute sense for us and is an unreal bargain. Won’t be the case for everyone, obviously.

If I picked up two Stadia I'm guessing the spare controller would work as a second controller? And then gift the spare Chromecast to someone else.
