Just because you don’t like what is being said, or don’t want to hear it does not mean Doctors should not tell the truth nor warn people about the dangers of a disease. No one likes being told by a Doctor that they have an illness or some activity is dangerous to their health, but that does not mean the Doctor should not be truthful. If you want to hear bullshit, don’t listen to a Doctor.
I shouldn't have mentioned masks because they are not a big deal in the grand scheme of things apart from say when it comes to child development but no one would actually be too upset or pessimistic about mask wearing and it's not the thing that depresses people.
What is detrimental for peoples mental health is talking about lockdowns for years to come and worrying when the next one will be and things like not being able to make plans to set up a business etc, starting a family etc. What a depressing world to bring kids into if this was going to continue on for years or forever more.
I personally can't see this going on indefinitely regardless of variants etc. for many reasons. Mental health has suffered for many people but that hasn't reached its peak yet, the country would be broke, they couldn't keep paying PUP every time the businesses were forced to close, birth rates will drop, there's loads of things
It isn't legally possible. You can't vaccinate someone against their will.
By random I mean that one doesn't know who's going to pop up next and cause people to be afraid because of what they say. In other countries it doesn't matter as much as it does in Ireland because there is a balance in the media and opposition and alternative viewpoints galore. In the case of Ireland you're dealing with identical newspapers, identical political parties, and no conservative media, which means no balance. That means people are exposed to the same viewpoints on a daily basis, i.e. T É, Newstalk, The Irish Times and the Irish Independent, all of which are indistinguishable from each other.
Do you agree with me that doctors and scientists are not supposed to sow panic? Dr Jay Bhattacharya said in an interview once that he was taught as a medical student that doctors are not supposed to sow panic or create fear. Do you think that was good advice?
I think even if a doctor is on radio they should tell the truth. Censoring the truth is a slippery dangerous terrifying slope.
Already got it. Double jabbed and natural immunity, guess I’m super immune now…
Choosing to wear them. Scientists in Ireland are saying they will be mandatory in Ireland for years to come.
Its to reduce A@E admissions when some drunk Muppets end up in rows etc and have to go to hospital.
They aren’t random Doctors and Scientists though.
I was in Japan a couple of years ago and was fascinated by the number of people, young and old who wore masks going about their everyday activity. I had assumed it was to protect themselves from others spreading germs, but it is actually to prevent those with symptoms from infecting others. It is part of their culture to regard the safety and well-being of other people (ironically the roll out of their vaccine programme has not been that impressive for a country that prides itself on efficiency). For us that seems to be a problem.
Do I think we will be wearing masks in future? Yes, I believe there has been a fundamental shift in people’s concern about the spread of germs, so some will wear them. I am certain that Covid is here to stay, and that it will mutate so that we will get more variants like the Delta strain. More people will die, more people will be seriously ill and the only defence will be modifications in people’s behaviour and vaccines. This in not the first time there has been a shift in people’s behaviour in responce to disease, HIV in the 80s is an example. Vaccines against Polio, TB, malaria etc have made diseases that killed or maimed less of a problem. As regards lockdowns, when the risks to society become so great that they need to be considered, then of course they should be. The alternative, letting people die or flooding our health system to the extent that other diseases like cancer go untreated is far worse.
If you want to do your bit to reduce the need for masks or lockdowns, get the vaccine and reduce the risk of spread to others by wearing a mask and washing your hands.
But that's why I stress that I'm talking about the media scientists and doctors (and academics and architects, basically anyone with Dr before their name) and not a person's private doctor. I just can't see how talking about restrictions forever, criticising people, talking down to people, giving people no hope, isn't to do harm. Of course if you're poorly you'd want your doctor to tell you what's wrong with you. But random scientists and doctors being in the media 24/7 sowing panic and creating fear is just wrong, in my opinion.
Class, will we change the name of the country to north Korea too?
Nobody knows.
The Oireachtas could legislate for it and the Supreme Court will let us know one way or another.
If Covid-19 is here to stay it is just a matter of time before that happens anyway.
Do you think it's the truth that years from now we'll still be wearing masks and having rolling lockdowns due to covid?
Would you not want your Doctor to tell you the truth? There would be a greater risk if the media only told the public what they wanted to hear.
I believe that doctors and scientists are not supposed to sow panic or do harm. I think it harms people to be constantly negative and pessimistic. And I'm referring to the media scientists and doctors only here. The ones who are on the telly every day, in the papers, on the radio etc. A balance is what's required. There are plenty of scientists and doctors in England who provide that balance. They give people hope. I can't think of any in Ireland. The problem is the lack of conservative media. For a democracy to be functional you need balance and alternative viewpoints.
I'm not saying they should lie, but they should stop talking about restrictions for years (Sam McConkey, for example) or creating a permanent dystopian society.
Is this even a legal possibility?
Indeed, In fact they should be all stoned to death imo, it's a tough measure, but it's only way we can protect the HSE
It's not an assumption, its my opinion. Its not up for debate.
Just to be clear, you think the people you list should downplay the seriousness of Covid instead of telling the public the truth, so that the public’s mood is better? In other words, you want them to lie?
A pessimist and an optimist are walking down the street, the pessimist says “Things are just awful, they couldn’t possibly get any worse”, the optimist replies “yes they can”.
I made this point in the other thread too but the people heard what the government wanted them to hear. This is not a case of a government being completely honest and the people just taking it up wrong because they heard what they wanted to hear.
Also the government DID lift restrictions as the situation was worsening. They have not been consistent at all.
When the government want schools open they tell us repeatedly that schools are safe.
When they're closed they don't want to open them because of the risk.
Then they're open and we're told they're safe.
Then they're closed....
You’re increasing your risk of getting the dose by doing that.
Not tongue in cheek at all. I thought it wasn't taken in Ireland all right. But I wasn't sure.
Would you agree with me that when Gabriel Scally, Sam McConkey, Tony Holohan, Anthony Staines et al are constantly negative and pessimistic that they do harm to people? To people's mental health and wellbeing. That when they sow panic they do harm? That when Tony Holohan talks about indefinite social distancing and mask wearing, he does harm? And then the question is: why are the Irish scientists, doctors, and academics in the media (tv, radio, newspapers) always negative? Why never any positivity? There may have been a scientist or doctor that was positive, but I don't think I've ever come across such a scientist or doctor in the media.
Ok
They won’t. I’ll be in the states for a while.
No. I don't have an issue with you believing that.
I don't think it's accurate... but it's fine for any of us to believe that perhaps if a certain part of society did something then the situation would be different. I believe that people don't 'have' to be going to nightclubs etc. but I don't think they are bad people for doing so.
My issue is with the assumptions you make and how you paint the unvaxxed as selfish people who only care about themselves. It's just not accurate.
Sure.
It's time to bring in mandatory vaccination.
The unvaccinated have proven they cannot behave themselves and are a societal menace.
It won’t affect me even if they do.
