EmigratedEng wrote: » Hi guys, Is anyone else submitting an application next month? I'v prepped everything and have the core of most of my essays sorted, but the issue I'm running into is that nobody in my office has gone through the process. As such, I don't really have a reference for what's a good/bad application. Engineers Ireland also don't run any courses in the country I've emigrated to so I can't reach out to any nearby members. Does anyone happen to know of example applications floating about? I'm in structural engineering so something along those lines would be great. And any tips with regards the essays would be massively appreciated. Cheers
Bobjims wrote: » Hi, I'm applying for the January deadline. I've completed my application and submitted it to my sponsors before the Christmas. Just need to get feedback from them and make relevant revisions before making the final application. I don't have any example essays but I've had some advice from other Chartered Engineers on writing the application. The guidance documents from EI are key. Just follow them closely and your application should come out well. If you've any specific questions on the application I'd be happy to help. Btw, I'm a mechanical engineer with 6 years experience. What discipline are you qualified in? Cheers
Bobjims wrote: » Hi all, There doesn't seem to be much discussion around on this year's chartered engineer applications. Was just wondering are there many readers here applying for the January deadline this Friday or planning on applying later this year? I've my application completed and with my supporters for online verification. It would be great to get a discussion started here on experiences going through this process and if anyone has any advice for the interview stage. Cheers!
i know this is a 2018 thread but is anyone here due to carry out their Engineers Ireland interview in a couple of weeks time? Would just like some advice on how to study for this.
Thanks
I did it this year and posted my thoughts on the process in the 2016 thread at the end.

(a mod should probably merge them into a 2021 mega thread)
Anyway, let me know if you have any questions.
Did you get a date for your interview yet? I'm expecting mine but no confirmation yet.
No Paddy still waiting. I know the 3 days that it might be is all? Are you Civil? What preparation have you done so far?
Yes Timmy, Civil/Structural. Haven't done anything yet. Will the interviews be in October? I haven't done any prep yet.
I was provided with 3 possible dates 18th -20th October and responded with my availability. Got word of my date and time yesterday.
I assume if you haven’t heard anything yet then perhaps you will be later?
Do you know how you plan to prepare for it?
Did you get an interview date Paddy?
For preparation, knowing your submission inside out is the most important thing. The interview is like a validation exercise, they want to pass you and you've got to the interview stage on the basis that your submission is good enough for chartership. So be confident in what you've achieved as an engineer already.
If you're asked questions that you don't know the answer to be up front about it. Don't try and blag it, instead explain the steps you'd go through to find the solution.
Thanks BSharp. I am actually finding it difficult to study for it as I know my work pretty well and get bored of reading over the same material. Is it worth being aware of EI code of conduct and recent articles?
It can do no harm if you're keen to do as much preparation as possible.
You could also think about how innovation/technology/work habits have been changing recently and how they may affect the way you previously did things/gained your experience and how you would work in the future.
Both of the above may help lengthen your response to questions and allow you to provide further insight and consideration of the industry and your role into the future.
Sounds great. Just looking forward to having it out the way now. If it just more like a chat than a formal interview then I think that will help settle me in.
Mine was more like a chat anyway, bit of formality but all very relaxed. I know a few engineers that do the interviews and they'd be more that approach too.
Mine was like a chat, and although it was friendly, it still felt fairly formal. It was grand.
I was asked about my CPD in mine, luckily I had recently compiled it and was very familiar with the content so I could speel off a lot of it from memory, no harm compiling it before the interview anyway.
Glad to say I did my interview and passed 😀 thanks for the help folks
Ah brilliant, congratulations
