Ok, fair enough, I stand corrected but I thought the person who asked the question simply forgot about Han Mi surviving so not sure what happened to the other 3 pairs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 86 ✭✭BeginAgain

The 3 other pairs were eliminated because both team members failed to finish with 20 marbles.

Was thus shown or said cause I missed it if it was. Or were we just left to presume. I mean I guess it is obvious but seems like a wierd thing to leave out especially given the conversation between 2 of the contestants in that episode

  • Registered Users Posts: 86 ✭✭BeginAgain

Presume, Gi Hun panic for the last marble was a clue to what happened the teams that couldn't decide a winner takes all in time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,348 ✭✭✭✭super_furry

Just finished it there, thought it was okay but it ended very poorly - peaked in episode six and was downhill from there.

All the big twists were sign-posted a mile off, the 001 thing was obvious from the moment he survived the riot and they really gave the game away when they didn't show him die after the marble game. Same with the cops' brother being involved and Gi Hun's mam being dead when he got back.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,716 ✭✭✭✭TheValeyard

Thought it was very good. Last episode could babe been merged with previous. Which was also strange, second last episode was under 30 minutes and final around an hour.

Say there be a fair Pink Soldier costumes this Halloween. Good music throughout.

Not as graphic or gory as people had made out. Far worse out there. But it worked well for what it was when needed.

Probwbe a sequel I'd say, seeing how big a success it was.

All eyes on Kursk. Slava Ukraini.

Binged it too over a few nights.

Decent show but not as great as many are saying. An interesting idea but quite formulaic as others have said. And also think that some of the twists were fairly obvious.

    6.5/10

Funny how people always claim these things after they have watched it and not called it beforehand.

People I have spoken to only had an inkling of the cop and the brother story. The rest was not that predictable and also who wants to see a pensioner get killed and how they showed his partner's reaction did not give it away.

Wouldn't agree it ended poorly at all and love to know what you would have wanted for it to end better.

it was a very good show, kept me hanging on for the most part, though there were a few things I wasn't mad about.

The episode with the marbles hit me the hardest, was on the verge of tears after it.

I quite enjoyed the bit in the last episode where they showed the pictures of the finalists taken for the first game and you can see how much they've changed.

Some of the topics addressed felt a bit cliched but they were done in an interesting way. Survivor's guilt, survival of the fittest, empathy vs. selfishness, class differences, treatment of immigrants.

I wasn't mad about the ending though I'd also wonder what would be a satisfying ending in this case. It didn't really do anything new for me. It felt like it lost the run of itself a bit towards the end.

Quite disappointed that they left the door open for a second season. I hope it doesn't dilute the quality.

That red light green light song seems to be getting popular. My 7 year old came home from school the other day singing it 🤣*

Do they use the song in the dubbed version does anyone know?

TBH I am surprised at the success of this. I enjoyed the show personally but I wouldn't have said it was any better or worse than Home Sweet Home, Kingdom or Alice in Borderland. I am not sure how it is Netflix most popular show ever. It seems to have captured the public imagination for some reason.

*he also asked me if he could have Squid Game as his movie on Saturday night 🤣

Kingdom was an awful lot better I would have said..

Aib was sh1te..I stopped watching half way through episode 5..

Well yeah that is a matter for debate but you get the point that Squidgame was nothing out of the ordinary so it seems strange that it captured the public imagination so much more than the others.

Home Sweet Home was my favourite of the 4. I watched a couple of episodes of Kingdom and gave up on it before being talked back into it by my brother. Really enjoyed it by the end.

Yeah true enough..And even moreso when you take into account cinema from that neck of the woods (movies like..) ..They've been knocking out some exceptional movies for years..

I think a lot of the hype is just that it's Netflix's series du jour..

I'll have a look for home sweet home..

I like it and still have to watch the final episode. But why are people saying it it so original and graphic?? To me it’s tame in its violent and gore. Battle Royale the Japanese movie from 10/15 years ago was similar story but far more graphic. And for me the movie Parasite was original (and great) but this Squid Game is neither original or great (it’s good).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,283 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

That's what I was saying. It's a pretty niche show compared to others in the top 10. Like why didn't Alive in Borderland get the same reaction? But it seems a series just gets talked about by people then others want to see. Wouldn't surprise me if it was due to some celeb or "influencer" or someone along those lines.

It might increase viewership for those other shows like AiB, Sweet Home and Kingdom. But we know Netflix counts those who watch the first 2 minutes, which is a strange idea, so how many actually like it enough to finish the series and seek out the similar shows?

Is Squid Game 'original'? No, not particularly - the whole 'death game' thing is basically a genre itself at this stage. What I would argue it does better than pretty much any of its predecessors is actually emphasise the moments of grim realisation and ethical dilemmas - when the games start, you know some of the characters we know and like (or hate in some cases) aren't actually going to make it out. I'm a big fan of Battle Royale, but this certainly benefits from having a TV-show runtime to explore the characters and relationships. It's not perfect - as I said earlier, I think it largely works around having the protagonist making some of the tough decisions other characters make - but there were certainly moments where I went '****' as I realised what the writer had set up. It's also a lot more gung-ho in its critique of modern class dynamics and the dehumanising impact of poverty that one might have anticipated, quite like Parasite in that regard.

I'd also say the massive popularity of the battle royale genre in video games helps explain its massive, unprecedented success over some of its competitors. But Parasite and the K-pop surge does show there's a big audience for Korean media. It helps that Korean TV/filmmaking is in rude health - there's a vibrant independent and arthouse scene in particular, far beyond the sort of shows or movies Netflix will buy up.

Kingdom is great, with the exception of that special they released earlier this year. That was godawful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,688 ✭✭✭✭Muahahaha

Finished it last night, I enjoyed it but equally didnt think it was that good that it deserved all the media hype. It being Netflixs most watched show ever is probably a function of them attracting more and more subscribers rather than Squidgame being essential watching tv.

As others said the VIPs really lowered the tone. Might have been better if they showed people all over the world betting on the characters rather than just this bunch of wealthy people. Their animal masks did remind me of the Wicker Man though so maybe a nod to that by the director.

I also wish they had of fleshed out the harvesting of organs more, I thought they missed a good trick there becasue in real life China there is a trade from poor people to rich for their organs. They could have made a good sub plot out of that

Id say 7/10 overall and will watch the sequel when ever it arrives

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,964 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

The VIPs really were brutal, sometimes I fire up that scene again just for how cringe it was. They should have had them face some kind of repercussions aswell.

I see some reviews are trying to compare this with Parasite. This was an excellent Netflix show, and we binged it over 3 nights. Parasite is in a completely different league though. It's one of the best movies ever made.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,899 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

    Thought this was really good.

Biggest let down was the VIPs. I couldn't care less about them and the dumb ass masks they wore, for some reason, annoyed me. Frontman, now he had a good mask.

Anyway liked or loved everything else.

    8/10.

Does it justify the hype? No.

    But then nothing ever does.

The VIPs made the ambient dialogue in Bethesda games sound like normal and articulate conversation.

Found Parasite to be very overrated myself. Loved Squid game, best thing on Netflix this year. Episode 6 was amazing, episode 7 was pretty intense too.

Disagree , way too many clues that I was hoping it was a double bluff.

    1. Was an expert on all the games

    2. The fact that his page was missing in the players blinder.

    3. That keep repeating about how things reminded him of his past like house/alley

    4. The fact that got killed off screen

    5. The fact that we didn't see the host face, it had to be someone we knew.

    Anyway some interesting fan theories:

1.The cards chosen at the train station decide if you are a player or guard. He choose blue which the players wear. The guards wear red

    2. The old man is long lost main character father. The fact that old man talks about his son liking chocolate milk, the same alley, the spanking that he gave son. ( personally I think not possible but grandfather might)

    3. The deaths are foreshadowed, the girl cut throat, the fall from bridge

Finished up tonight. Was really digging it up til episode 6 but the final two ran out of steam. Was an interesting take on a basic formula, the moral dilemmas faced had time to be fleshed out whereas in something like Battle Royale that's not possible. Some of the twists and turns could be seen coming.

There will definitely be a second season and I'll absolutely watch it but I hope ta fcuk the dyed red hair is ditched.

SPECULATION SPOILER TO FOLLOW, CANT FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET SPOILER TAGS ADDED ON THIS POXY NEW SITE.

The cop is 100% still alive, he was only shot in the shoulder and his drop to the water was very short, watch it back and is only a couple of seconds from fall to splash.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,480 ✭✭✭✭MEGA BRO WOLF 5000

It's a perfectly watchable show. I mean, its fine. It's definitely better than Netflix's usual content. The cinematography is gorgeous. It does suffer from terrible dialogue, bad writing in whole segments (the whole cop thing was told so so bad, and his brother etc...) Couldn't give a crap about frontmans character or any of the masked VIP's, honestly they didn't even make sence, they paid what 30odd million to watch two games at the end, which were the crappy games, marbles wtf. Then whole scenes with the doctor harvesting organs...hello...POINTLESS NONSENCE! Loads more guff that went nowhere but I can't think right now. I honestly didn't "get" a lot of why these things happened, and it's not like I missed anything. It's just poorly written. You'd want to be blind to not have figured out who the old man was. It tried to be clever but failed miserably. I'd recommend it to people who are used to crappy TV shows...

As one fella said in work when I asked did he watch Breaking Bad/Wire/Better Call Saul/Oz/etc... he said "no they're total shyte"...but he loved squid game! There's your demographic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,348 ✭✭✭✭super_furry

Absolutely. Frontman will be back running the game in the second series and the cop will be a contestant forced to play.

I felt the end had a feel of the Matrix and the choice that Neo was faced.

If the Frontman was a previous winner then it does give some credence that he too was "tricked" to return only to find himself the overall caretaker of the games. I wonder why someone who wins a fortune, like the Frontman, would return to oversee it all. The meeting with the original recruiter just before he gets on the plane seemed too controlled. Maybe

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,719 ✭✭✭StupidLikeAFox

On the organ harvesting, I felt it was included to show that the guards were poor/desperate as well as the contestants. It kind of distinguished them from being the unquestioning henchmen that you would have assumed them to be. I think the second series will focus more on that side of things (based on nothing at all)

  • Registered Users Posts: 89 ✭✭sheepondrugs

Enjoyed apart from the VIP segments which were brutal to watch.

Interesting none of them were Korean, all seemed to be American and one Eastern European/Russian.

If his drop was so short why didn’t he jump.

How did not one person out of all the contestants, not notice the huge clues on the dorm walls?

Because he suspected the front man was who the front man turned out to be and wanted to verify it.

I reckon it's well set up for a second season with a different dynamic as the main character sets about confronting the people behind the game.

Jung Ho-yeon is mesmerizing. She has one of those faces that are somehow beautiful and ugly at the same time (at least in this, haven't seen anything else with her in it). Those freckles are magnificent.

Overall, it's not great art by any means, but it's good TV.. as for getting snobby about this show compared to others, come on now, that's just comical. Enjoy this show, or don't (I did) - either way, it's nothing to get snobby about. :D

It's hard to figure how valuable this has been for netflix..

enough to get a bunch of money and subscriptions and to the level where folks who sound like they were less interested in it.. watched it for hype level for sure

that seems like a pretty good result

More seasons would clear that up a bit I'd say. I wasn't as pushed on the following Stranger Things seasons as much as I remember being about the first one.. but each Stranger Things seasons has certainly come across as being big successes for netflix.

So probably all about what the Squid Game creators come up for the next seasons and if they can figure out ways to keep they audience

I loved the frontman, his english accent was so cool.

You can tell the actor is from a rich Korean family with that accent ... the VIP's however ?? wtf was that ???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,506 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

The masked frontman was a different actor to the unmasked frontman, according to my wife. The unmasked guy is tiny in real life, whereas the frontman genrally towered over everyone. Doubt the voice was either of them as well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,246 ✭✭✭TomSweeney

Interesting, I do think this is the English voice , he is from a wealthy family - probably went to an English school.

    Slightly behind most here.

Episode 4 is one of the most fucked up things I have ever seen on telly, in a good way. Amazing.

Can't beat a wise old head, no matter what the game.

Was that the Tug O War episode?

I used to do TOW competitively and the 'strategy' in Squid Game was BS. The heavier team will generally win at TOW. If the male team had all just sat down there would be little chance that the team of tiny girls and OAPs would stand a chance. All the heavier guys pulling in unison will easily win.

The whole team should also be at the same side of the rope.

    Being pedantic here ;)
