put some lime around water trought it might help
Just after having maggots in the feet of two ewes and in the backside of another. We were supposed to be dipping last Saturday but the weather didn't allow it .
We usually dip when the contractor is with a neighbour who's parttime and have to bring the sheep to him as the contractor won't move, we'll have to give it a miss now.
Going to footbath on monday also treat with vector and the dipping would've saved all that.
The rams will be put with them then
Found maggots as well yesterday. In a hogget which would be very unusual for us here.
And in a lamb, that was shorn just over 4 weeks ago - I didnt think they would get maggots with so little fleece…
Both didn’t have too many, but in both the maggots had started to burrow into the sheep, the dirty bastards…

No, although I am putting a half dozen Hoggets to the ram this year for lambs for the kids.
Lads were laughing at me, saying 6 this year, 30 next year 🙂
But, the way the price is going, I’d say every store lamb I have now could be on the hook next spring if the price keeps going up…
But we’ll see, counting unhatched chickens and all that 😉🙂
Maggots are vicious this tme of the year, destroy a lamb in 24hrs.
Even though I was getting the sheep in monday morning ther was no way I 'd leave that ewe till then, she'd be destroyed
I bought ewe lambs recently and the last batch I did not click due to rain. You have me worried now there is nothing more I hate than maggots.
Clik extra dluted at 5 parts water - 1 part clik will cover them for a mth if it's only maggots you're preventing.

Every area is different but copper cobalt iodine and selenium would be the main concerns here
For the ran effect can you leave the ram in an adjoining paddock for 2 weeks and then let him in. Would this work.
Have 50 sheep in nice grass and the tup in a wee garden beside them. Have nowhere to put this tup if I do move him. Which I don't want the hassle of either. (He's a lanork tup and is hard work handling him) Would rather just open the gate
i also have 2 rams in paddock beside field where ewes are always do it as you say very handy to just open gate and let them out next week
Often hear people on about sheep for breeding with nice sharp heads. What exactly does this mean? Is it that they have a narrow head and so may pass this on to any off spring and therefore be easier lambed?? For example i have attached a photo of a ewe lamb and wonder would this be described as a sharp head and therefore make a good replacement ewe
It's a bit like lads selling dairy bred beef cattle. They'll all tell you that they're out of British Friesian cows even though they might look more like a giraffe. I saw a lad advertising Texel sheep as having Sharp heads so I guess it's subjective.

I think it's based on looks. I honestly believe most farmers buy sheep that look well. You can't say she's a good looking ewe, so you say a ewe with a sharp head
Bloods gone off, should have the results back in about a week. Have three main parcels so sampled 3 ewes each from two of the parcels and I'll get the third another time when I have that better planned out.

Fella I know came home from Australia and I met him at the annual ram sale, we went over to look at the second prize winning ram lamb. I can be a little slow at times.... Talked at length about the head on the lamb, I couldn't resist, so rather furtively I leaned in (pre-covid) and said "You know what they do with the heads don't you?" He leans in "What?"
"Throw them in the skip".
Two years later that lad and another lad are shearing for me and I'm telling this to the other lad. To which Mr Sharp head straightens up "and what that fucker didn't know Jack, that was MY lamb!"
Some of my store lambs weren't doing great, so got a fecal test done - high score for Cocci (which I kinda expected)
But, also for worms ((STRONGLYE, STRONGYLE PAP &NEMATRODAIRUS)
Can I give two doses together? (Vecoxan for cocci, plus another white dose I imagine)
Or would I be better spacing out the two, especially as Cocci can be hard on the system I think?
White dose isn't working on a lot of farms now, yellow dose probably would be more sure.
What was the number. for worm eggs.
Whatever you use, do another FEC 14 days after you dose with a white or clear dose or 7 days after a yellow dose.to make sure.
A neighbours lambs lost more than a months thrive because of a dose not working

I didn’t think of doing another FEC in 2 weeks, but it’s a good call…
My cocci score was savage high (22500opg) but the lambs I tested were the bad ones, so I’m not surprised…
At those figures you need to have a dose that works, we dose for worms at 500 EPG.
Yea , FEC again 14 days after dosing with a white or clear dose or 7 days after a yellow dose. you need a 95% reduction to be considered successful
Worm innfections rise very quick this time of year
Where is the best place to get them tested or does any lab do it?
I dropped it into this place, but tis very local to me. Dropped it in Wednesday, emailed results this morning
Yeah, they are fierce high. But a few of my lambs got thin looking fierce quick - they are the ones I tested.
We'll dose and test again in 2 weeks.

Depends where you are. Farmlab in Roscommon are meant to be good. I use Oldcastle Labs, if they get the samples in the morning they'll have the results back that evening.
