He says he is President of Ireland, not President of the Republic of Ireland and he won't commemorate partition by the sound of it.

Do you agree with him?

How does one make a poll here?

My own view is he is mostly correct but I'm not sure is office is suppose to this political? The govt says they not instruct him not to go.

How is it political? Article 4 of the constitution clearly defines the name of the state and even British officialdom refers to the state of Eire. Are you suggesting that he should ignore the constitution and claim to be the president of a non existent state? Now that would be political!

The Uk have no vote thanks to the gfa. No one can remove ni except the ni people and it’s clear that’s not likely in the foreseeable future. That’s what the ira signed up to when they payed down their arms. Shocking isn’t it. What did everyone die for?

Oh the irony!. I don't know whether this has been picked up in previous pages, but in to-day's Irish Times there is a letter from one Terry Walsh, writing from Spain, which takes Michael D's side. In it the following appears "...President Higgins, as head of state and President of the Republic of Ireland ..."

If a supporter of the President can make this mistake, maybe the DUP could as well. Overall this debacle shows that there is plenty of life in old-school republicanism, at least in this discussion.

I am not aware of the spike. But I will have no issue getting an Irish passport if it smoothed the way for me to access stuff in Europe , but it will just be for convenience. I will maintain my British passport as that is my nationality and identity

You are showing a lack of understanding of the Uk. We are the Uk. Nothing is perfect but the majority of our people desire to remain as part of the Uk.

100 years and the only change is that an increasing number of ‘nationalists’ want to remain in Uk.

The biggest irony is that unionists have been (pretending to be) taking offence over the polite declining of an invitation and yet think that a celebration of 100 years of government endorsed segregation, impression, apartheid and even military dominance (including internment without trial) over a large proportion of the population is something to celebrate.

It will take a lot more time for your eyes to be opened. Pity!
