"Great news! 400 new jobs announced" - attitude towards more jobs

Why are we still acting like we're in 2012 where a new jobs announcement would be welcome news?

We have a massive labour shortage across all sectors at the moment. Anyone who wants a job can get a job.

Wages are going up, particularly in the professional sector. And they are going up big. This is not a good thing. This will increase property prices and those on the lower paid jobs will be hit.

I just fail to see the positives in new jobs announcements anymore. We don't have enough houses, public transport capacity.

We need inward investment to keep driving the economy so as to generate the taxes required to pay for houses and public transport.

As soon as these announcements stop happening, we're all f**ked.

Deffo,, the gov should come up with some progressive legislation that can stymie employment creation.

There's probably a few unused manifestos lying about from the previous century that FG could cherry pick from and cobble some sort of "Good Frankentein" Programme for Government from.

If there's a reversal of fortune and there's not enough jobs in the private market we can always jump on the hod or hoe or go netting sparrows.

I agree. What's lacking in Ireland is access to housing and public transport. More jobs compound these problems.

Our economy is a giant pyramid scheme - reliant on ever increasing population and number of taxpayers.

If the next generation have less jobs/less tax than the previous, then the whole thing topples over. Thats why people cheer new jobs

So wait.....more jobs.....a wealthier population and a stronger economy is a bad thing?

Housing and transport are issues that would be helped with more tax money coming in. More jobs mean more spending power and that means more taxes which can be used to fund housing developments and transport infrastructure.

A poster on another thread about this issue tried to argue that (1) there wasn't a labour shortage it was some sort of deception by hotel owners or hotel groups (2) if employers paid more they would get more employees how paying more produce more workers were not exactly worked out.

More jobs are a good thing but what's really needed is more housing. Having people waste half their income on someone else's mortgage/nest egg isn't beneficial to anyone who isn't receiving the money directly.

Thats not a fault of the increase in jobs though - its from short sighted govt policy, and a lack of any housebuilding for half a decade.

That and low interest rates causing asset prices to inflate.

At this stage there is a bigger chance of the employer providing their own housing for employees than the government or the market - and sure if they MNCs cant get staff due to housing costs/availability, it puts more pressure on government to sort their mess out.

This is it, the whole economic system is a disaster. Growth growth growth with no regard for anything else. Some kind of leveling out is required instead of just being slaves to GDP.

There are still thousands on the live register. Its not entirely true to say anyone who wants a job can get a job. Most people want a career in their field, not just any job. A positive new story is good to read among all the doom and gloom.

we need to stop this approach to running(ruining) our economy, we need to maintain our current approach, i.e. a perpetual deficit, use this money to create our critical needs, and then use the increased tax revenue, to ultimately service these debts, and of course to run our public services, i.e. money first, then taxation......

All functional economies are like that. But here and in the rest of the developed world there is a shift from the continuous increase in numbers (which is not happening anymore) to an increase in value added which leads to an increase in tax paid per worker.

So, 400 office or other skilled jobs including factory jobs - good, 400 amazon warehouse jobs - not so good.

our rising house prices are primarily due to running our economy primarily on private sector created money, we call this credit, and a serious lack of supply of houses, immigration is only a very minor entity of this outcome, if at all

Whoever might get the blame, the house prices are an indicator of Ireland having lots of people that earn enough to afford sky high rents and mortgages - this can't be a bad thing no matter how you spin it. There is a very simple solution, that is, build more houses and certainly not have less, and less paid, jobs.
