Jeez, I really hope Verstappen gets a jump on Lewis at the start. I hate the shitehawk stuff Mercedes do to look after their no. 1 driver. I'm watching to see them race, not gift positions.

    Why?

Deals done, he's out the gap at the end of the season. Why not go out in personal glory?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,688 ✭✭✭This is it

I can definitely see Mercedes struggle to control Bottas as easily as before to be honest. Whatever about giving up a fastest lap point, if asked to give up a win or podium I think Bottas will tell them to shove it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,661 ✭✭✭quokula

It’s a huge oversight in the rules that Merc can basically ask Bottas to do anything they want in the sprint race knowing it doesn’t matter because he’s starting at the back tomorrow anyway. Whether he complies now that he’s got an Alfa contract is another matter, he already went off script by beating Lewis yesterday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,884 ✭✭✭Hijpo

Not like he's going to a merc customer team. I'd like to see this be the start of Bottas reshaping his career and garner some more fans.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,550 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Because he's a professional and he'll almost certainly do the job he's asked to do by his employer.

I doubt he'll tell them to shove it and I doubt he'll even delay in obeying any team orders they give him. I imagine the plan for the sprint race is already organised.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,381 ✭✭✭lolie

No way Bottas is going to disobey team orders, the only way he gets a win this season while running 1 2 is if the championship is over and Lewis or Mercedes gifts him one.

Any pity i had for him this year went out the window after listening to his team radio.

In Silverstone after the crash he came on the radio to say it was a racing incident and there should be no penalty, in Zandvoort he said his tyres were ok to do another few laps purely so he could stay out and try hold up Verstappen.

He showed no backbone the last few years so doubtful he'll grow one in the next few months.

Max getting a good start today on the clean side might hopefully mix things up a bit but cant see him staying ahead such is Mercedes speed with drs.

Very nice to see Felipe Massa on TV.

Being a professional is one thing. But when you've already handed in your notice and your employer is consistently instructing you to do things that are both detrimental to yourself and that most objective external observers see as quite morally dubious, you may think twice about carrying out those orders. That said, Bottas has shown zero backbone in his career to date so there's no real indication that he'll start now.

Norris on soft will make it am interesting start for him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,339 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

Missed qualifying yesterday evening but know the results and obviously the sprint race grid shows how it went. Anyway this should be good stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,292 ✭✭✭✭ctrl-alt-delete

    Lewis goes backwards.

Yellow flag for Gasly going off.

    Safety car out

    Kubica spins out.

    Some start.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,339 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

Well this was eventful from the start.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,292 ✭✭✭✭ctrl-alt-delete

Gaslys front wing comes off, lucky that didn't take anyone behind.

Hamilton back up to 5th, pity.

Lewis had a shocking start there. Great overhead footage.

Couple of Safety Cars could leave the McLarens with a better chance to stay ahead of Hamilton.

McLaren are becoming the fun team this season. :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,292 ✭✭✭✭ctrl-alt-delete

Norris with some balls going down the inside of Hamiltom there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,339 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

He did and then had Lando norris up his inside and as was pointed out he wasn’t sure what to do.

I think we're seeing some evidence here with Bottas running his own race rather than trying to back Verstappen into the McLarens and Lewis that his attitude has shifted now he has an Alfa contract, no way would he be driving like this a few races ago. How long before Mercedes are on the radio telling him he needs to slow down to "preserve tyres"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,339 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

Well bottas can run his own race because of Lewis getting an awful start.

I would hope Bottas would ignore any such request, but he is so obedient you never know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,292 ✭✭✭✭ctrl-alt-delete

Looking good for Max. Lewis can't seem to get close enough to these McClarens.

With Bottas starting from the back tomorrow it would mean pole, and unless the McClaren tyres drop off soon he could have a two car buffer.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,369 ✭✭✭Rossi IRL

Sprint race has been dog awful

Has ruined the significance of qualifying for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,339 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

So Perez is under investigation for not giving the place back soon enough.

Should make for an interesting race tomorrow. Hamilton ought to clear the McLarens quick-ish and should have the pace over Verstappen so it could depend on how much advantage he can take in free air at the start.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,292 ✭✭✭✭ctrl-alt-delete

Lewis will have a sleepless night tonight.

That is a huge gap that Bottas and Max have made over the 18 laps of this race.

He certainly doesn't need another start like today, and starts on the same side of the track.

Redbull with a good day, but might have hoped Perez might have made a few places.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,339 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

Right that’s the F1 part of the day done. Now it’s on to the all Ireland football final where hopefully Mayo do the business.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,688 ✭✭✭This is it

Well, Red Bull couldn't have asked for much more! Pole tomorrow and Hamilton stuck behind two pretty quick McLarens. Delighted for Ricardo

Bar the start it was a pretty crap race...

I enjoyed that, good result. Mercedes look quick. I wonder how hard Max tried to close the gap to Bottas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,661 ✭✭✭quokula

Pretty incredible performance from Max to start on pole tomorrow in a car that's half a second off the Mercedes and arguably slower than the McLaren around this circuit. Amazing own goal for Mercedes taking a tactical penalty for Bottas on the assumption that Lewis wouldn't completely mess up and throw away the car advantage he has.

Should be interesting to see how the McLarens fair tomorrow, nice to see Ricciardo performing well again. Another very impressive performance from Giovannizzi too, probably the star of the weekend so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,329 ✭✭✭✭namloc1980

He didn't try at all as he didn't need to. He knew he'd be on pole as long as he stayed in second behind Bottas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,814 ✭✭✭Captain_Crash

It was clear from the RB radio comms that was the case, no point in taking any risks when he was de facto leading anyway!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,871 ✭✭✭✭klose

Ricciardo starting on the front row just puts a smile on your face, hopefully he has the pace to keep it that end of the field for the race. Hamilton will obviously have his work cut out for him tomorrow, you'd imagine by the time he in theory gets past the mclarens max should have built up a decent lead.

  • Registered Users Posts: 387 ✭✭RunningFlyer

Enjoyed that Sprint, especially with the results. Feel sorry for Gasly though. I’d say Merc are kicking themselves with the Bottas decision but imagine Lewis will still be in the running for a win.

What’s the story with starting tyres tomorrow? Do they still have to use their Q2 tyres from yesterday or is there a free choice?

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators, Regional East Moderators Posts: 12,602 Mod ✭✭✭✭2011

Agreed, that he decided this. Howeve he could have opted to try to win the extra point.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,814 ✭✭✭Captain_Crash

The joys of Risk v reward eh! Max will likely need another engine before the seasons out so it makes sense not to run it more than it needs to be and try and build a lead before that change needs to be made

hamilton is expected to take an engine penalty at some point?

Would the RB strategy be to try take the engine penalty at the same weekend as Hamilton? It looks like even on a track suited to merc they can still stay within touching distance so it wouldn't make sense to me to pick a certain track to take it.

Poor enough sprint, after the first lap everybody settled down and kinda accepted where they were

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,492 ✭✭✭Harika

Its Monza, doesnt strike me as good opportunity for a spring race. DRS is not effective so low overtaking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,550 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

It's got nothing to do with morals or backbone. He's a pro. He knows he's not the best driver in the world and he knows his role in the team. Nobody would level this criticism against Perez for getting out of the way. Maybe, if Perez ever manages to be fast enough to be ahead of Max, he'll tell Horner to sit on a hard one. Bit the reality is he'll get out of the way because that's his job as a no.2.

What has Bottas done or been asked to do, that's morally dubious?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,550 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

They all get free tyre choice for the start tomorrow. Normal rules apply after that re using 2 compounds. It seems most will go for a 1 stop race with hards and mediums or hards and softs if they're feeling particularly adventurous and they think they can manage the tyres through the race. Presuming most will start on the softer compound that they intend to run.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,814 ✭✭✭Captain_Crash

You have to ask yourself tho, if your so often ahead of your teammate that you need to be asked to move aside with such regularity… might you be as fast a driver on race day???

Really surprised with Hamilton’s start but makes for a fantastic race tomorrow. Him versus the McLarens will be interesting early on. I expect the story of the race will be can he get by them, and can he do it quick enough to put a challenge into Max.

But I wouldn’t rule out a McLaren win either, they’ve looked great this weekend. Already can’t wait!

Remember what Daniel is playing for tomorrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,684 ✭✭✭Charlie-Bravo

Is nerves getting the best of Lewis now he's being challenged at the front consistently? It's been too easy for him for years, but now, little negatives such as a poor start are really emphasised when the other cars around him are decent challengers.

And it seems that the Merc isn't as dominant on the Monza circuit when running out of battery at the end of each lap. It's such a power track, that trying to regen for one lap will leave you far behind the driver in front on the next lap.

He'll have a tough race on Sunday, but suspect a bit of luck with pitstops and safety cars, with help team strategy will get him up a few spots.

You could ask, but the answer would be pretty apparent. Bottas is a decent driver and occasionally is as fast or even faster than Hamilton. He gets no hop in these threads but he's a good, decent driver and this has probably been his least competitive season against Hamilton. Yet he qualified in first while playing the diligent no.2 and ploughing the air for Hamilton. That's a great performance.

Who knows, maybe Perez will some day reach out of mediocrity and get ahead of Max every once in a while too. As it stands he qualifies so poorly that he's never likely to get ahead of Max in a race on merit.

Bottas and perez are held to totally different standards. Bottas has failed to be a genuine challenge to Hamilton as an equal driver. Perez is miles off Max but gets credit because he was a decent no.2 for the first part of the season. He's on a poor run of form in the last few races though. If you had the choice of Bottas or Perez I'd pick Bottas all day long, he's just a faster driver.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,550 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

It seemed pretty clear that Hamilton was faster than Lando, but he couldn't get past the mclaren with a Mercedes engine. The safety car helped the mclarens to preserve preserve their soft tyres. Softs were a gamble and it paid off. On the same tyre I'd expect Hamilton to have gotten past one or both of the mclarens. He can use strategy in the race and they'll probably all start on the mediums, so I'd expect him to get up to second after the pit stop.

Passing max with with Honda might be easier than passing the mclaren with a Mercedes engine. But catching and passing max might be too much to ask after being held up and passing the mclarens.
