Any decent petrols going?

Hi all,

The missus is on the hunt for a petrol 2016-2018. 1.6 to 2.0L.

Price range up to 17k.

She'll be trading in 2010 golf 1.6 deisel.

Looking on Donedeal there seems to be a dearth of decent petrols about. A couple of Mazdas, and a Volvo V40 were really all that stood out.

The Mazdas were the 3 and the CX3.

Are these any good or to be avoided?

Any reason you're limiting yourself to 1.6 to 2 l? A lot of the newer smaller capacity turbo engines are excellent and well worth considering.

Lack of knowledge to be honest. Just assuming that you'd get more poke from a larger engine.

My feeling on overtaking is you want to be on the 'wrong' side of the road for as little as possible.

A lot of them now go for smaller capacity but throwing in turbos to make up the power differential. You should get the same/more horses from 1.0-1.2 turbos as you would from your naturally aspirated 1.6 of old. Mazda are possibly the only ones that come to mind that are sticking with the n/a engine types - and they have their fans because of it. You should probably look to bhp numbers instead of engine size at this stage.

If you can find one, the 1.4 150 TSi engines are great. There were never many in Ireland but they've great power and response.

Small turbo engines are a poor replacement for a standard 2.0 DOHC Naturally aspirated. More issues, sensors, things to break and more cost when getting them sorted.

I do think a big lazy engine means you can ignore the miles compare to a hard pushed 1.0l Turbo.

Admittedly they are probably more comparable to a 1.6L petrol of old.

Diesel or Petrol I find bigger is better for longevity and ease of driving. Minor cost increase all told.

Then again I only have so much experience and then anecdotal to support this point.

you won't hear me disagreeing with your thoughts about the small turbo engines, I was just highlighting to the OP why they're seeing a lot more lower capacity engines than in the "olden" times

Toyota Hybrids - or at least the ones fitting into this price range - are a little boring but are bulletproof and very cheap to run.

Nice car and the price seems fair for the age and miles. Personally spending that type of money I'd try get a slightly older Audi/BMW in a petrol engine if possible I know the A4 has the 1.4 150bhp petrol engine rather than a basic skoda, but to each their own!
