Some Dublin players really let themselves down yesterday.
When the defeat came as it had to some season, you had to wonder would the Dubs lose with dignity or not.
I think we found out. Ugly stuff.
The Mayo player was left wide open for that horrific challenge. The real question is would a Fenton or McCaffrey have done what small did? He has form and it's well known . All counties have a player with a dark side but a true supporter is able to call out their own . If we had a proper review of incidents where money/appeals did not impact it would have prevented a hit like that from previous punishments
I did not realize that. However citing in other sports are for rough or dangerous play. The expectation is that referees will deal with all other matters on the pitch. The Aidan O Shea incident you described fall into that category
He shouldnt have been on the pitch at all, even after full time cos teams head back to the dressing room. But Lane blows up after the point goes over, you can see him blow up and signal clearly in the video of the James McCarthy incident that was posted above.
It only seems like he runs on then but he was definitely only there to cause a scene. I don't think he should face any kind of ban for it though.
Brilliant! (from a Dub who is slowly coming to terms with last saturday)
It prompted me to check the original - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqZTP8-8wIs
Goo dluck to Mayo in the final
So did anyone win big by betting on Mayo winning on Saturday. I would have if I was a gambler but I am not and very rarely go into a betting shop.
Don't think I would have enjoyed the game as much if I had money on it but maybe my finances would look a bit better.
He should never ref County football again
He had no problem saying it was a fair challenge live on air despite seeing multiple replays
Problem is you'd have to have backed Mayo to qualify for the final. Backing a straight win would have resulted in a loss due to the 70 mins ending as a draw.
Barney Rock was the culprit, IIRC.
I’m sorry to say this ‘thuggish’ element has been running through Dublin teams for a long time.
I would kind of exclude the Jim Gavin teams, but the others before and after certainly, in my opinion, had this element of thuggery embedded in them.
This standing on toes, sledging, sly off the ball digs, leading with the elbow in ‘tackles’,pulling and dragging.
It really was a disgraceful performance vs Mayo in ‘21.
The mask came off and culminated in what we saw on Saturday.
Not saying other teams are completely innocent either, but as I see it ,Dublin carry a lot of baggage in that realm.
Have a lot of form, a lot.
Philly McMahon eye gouge in the 2015 final to add to the above
The most unlikable team in a long time for sure. No characters, no grace and no class.
Mayo are a godsend.
Such an obvious pick up off the ground, so frustrating
Still won 6 in a row tho
Stop living in the past, maaaan!
You can actually see how his panic and indecision lead to the melee around him. A terrible referee.
How did he come up with a free out for Dublin?
Shoving the physio, real classy
Then walked off like a coward when a few big Mayo men showed up to the scene. Real tough guy..
Ah jaysus..
He didn't need to see them again, he saw them when they happened and gave out yellow cards.
Anyone could have missed the shoulder. It would have been a sickener for Mayo if Basquel had finished the chance, but those things happen.
Amazingly, he didn't see any refereeing errors that actually benefitted Dublin...strange, that.
"You only see what your eyes want to see" comes to mind.
Honestly thats just click bait. Running it to create clicks
Insert trollface meme here
So its been evident in Dublin teams for a long time but you'll be kind by excluding the Gavin era, so thats close to the last decade then yeah?
So a team who have always been "thuggish" but not so much the past decade? 😉
Suppose if you look back further the Dubs were fighting with themselves not Meath and sure no end of other counties were harder too, the game changed since. Not just one county.
Fair play to Mayo. They took full advantage of a shocking collapse by The Dubs. It was surreal. At half time it looked straight forward, maybe that was the issue. I'm a Dubs fan myself and we all knew this crazy run would end one day and some might even say it needed to end fast for the good of the game.... But you envisage it ending in a close hard fought encounter and miss out by a point in a tight game.
The way it ended with a 6 point half time lead and scoring 4 points in the next hour was what disappointed me. It had to end eventually but the manner of it was unfortunate for us. And probably thrilling for others.
I fancy Kerry now myself and I was leaning that way anyway even if we had beaten Mayo. It's a good Kerry side, very young and maybe regardless of which side wins this was needed for the GAA as even us Dubs were aware that nothing lasts forever.
Besta luck to Kerry or Mayo.
What I don't see mentioned all that much, which is a factor in the pack catching Dublin, or Dublin falling back to the pack is conditioning. Dublin got a financial push others didn't, and the set up was far more professional. They were 10 years ahead in conditioning.
Now other teams are catching up, their set ups are becoming more professional too, but it took a generation for these players to come through. Now teams can live with Dublin for 70+ minutes, where before Dublin beat teams in the last 10-15 minutes as they tired. That was a major factor in their dominance really, won cheap All-Irelands on the basis of that head start they got in modern conditioning, but hopefully that's done with now. Teams can go the distance with them, their free ride is over
Hickey is a doctor he would want to get his eye tested. Of the four incidents he is only slightly correct on one. The O'Hora/Howard /Ruane is here
All three are going for the ball on the replay you will see it was Howard that hit O'Hora and came out worst.
It seem that the reason the 45 was retaken is that the lineman told Hennelly as he was in the process of taking the 45( actually running up to it) not to take it but he was committed at that stage so he put him off
On the Basquel black card it was border line however Basquel as he was laying off the ball moved into the path of the Mayo player but more importantly he turned his back into him its a classic impedeing tactic. It a deliberate body check some day the ref give it some days not. However at that stage of the game Connor Lane was all over the place. Basquel should when he layed off the ball and put his hand in the air and made an effort not to impede He probably knew he had missed two red card offences and 2 black card offences in normal time so was not giving Basquel the benefit of the doubt at that stage. It is at 1.30 on the match video at the bottom
Believe it or not Commerford took 5 maybe 6 steps, its at 1.56 on this video, borderline but he was taking small steps ref are more likely to give steps in that occasion.

Pretty sure I saw the same man trying to pinch one of the Mayo players om Saturday. With that cheeky grin on his face.
Only thing missing for him now would be to do a Mike Tyson or Luiz Suarez and bite someone. Better not give him ideas!!!
He's been a nothing player for a few years now so has to do something big everytime he gets a few minutes to keep his name in the media. Selfish player.
