He says it was a mistake not to link the recent summer weather to climate change. Vows to do better in the future.
A few hot summer days.
In July.
Has to be because of climate change surely?
Was it ever hot in the summer before?
my my, the ironing. you deliberately misquoted the article. you attacked the chap for something he clearly didn't say, and aren't willing to admit that a) you were wrong, or b) that the article you quoted was possibly misleading.
as is now clear what he said, you could change the thread title to something that's not wilfully inaccurate?
Oh grow up, the thread title is an After Hours thread title, slightly tongue in cheek, sorry if it upsets you.
I linked directly to the article in the very first post and accurately quoted it verbatim in later posts.
Go and find something else to be offended by.
Im having trouble reconciling this. If climate change is real and is evidenced by recent weather extremeness in other countries, and climate change and weather are intrinsically linked, then how can it be said with confidence that climate change had no impact on Ireland's recent heatwave?
Not being smart. It sounds like many posts are suggesting that even if climate change is linked, Ireland is somehow exempt from the effects of climate change.
But he did say it, he clearly states that "Irelands heatwave" was within a series of "unusual weather events" and that "people often want to know if climate change is to blame".
i don't think anyone is stating that on its own, a single weather event is evidence in and of itself. it's patterns or clusters which can start to form evidence.
RTE are simply filling the void of daily misery and depression that was left after the church finally had their necks wound in.
If Ireland was to start having prolonged heatwaves year in year out then you can see patterns of weather that go against the previous norms and therefore deduce that climate change is a factor. Warm weather is simply a part of weather. Our weather last week was not extreme or unprecedented but getting it all the time (as in every summer) would be.
If climate change wants to give us a couple of months instead of a couple of days of that weather yearly, long may it continue.
Slightly tongue in cheek....? It's complete bullshit!
Why don't you come back to us when there is actually evidence. Until then you are pushing an agenda without any supporting evidence.
But who the hell are they virtue signalling to???
What evidence will you accept?
Nobody is denying that climate change exists, it's being changing since the dawn of the earths existence. The way it is now with rte is that everything is bad, dying, or dead. I have an itch on my arse, oh, it must be climate change. All news channels regurgitate the same crap day in day out. Human beings are devolving.
No its not. In both articles the recent heatwave in Ireland is referred to as a possible example of climate change.
Can you tell me what exactly it is this man is apologising for?
Extensively Peer reviewed. You know, the sort of stuff sensible people use to draw sound conclusions.
So, you ask where I got the notion he lumps Ireland's recent warm spell with extreme weather events in Canada, the US and Germany? How about this sentence from his article:
'In recent weeks, we've seen a series of unusual weather events, from record hot temperatures in Canada and the northwest United States, to deadly floods in Germany and Ireland's heatwave. When extreme weather occurs, people often want to know if climate change is to blame.
Funny how you missed that, Scotty.
Can confirm. Back then though it was global cooling. That we were heading into a new ice age and any cold weather was due to this. The MSM just played the reverse card.
i don't think there's any point in asking that question. and the funny thing is, assuming climate change is real, by the time these people finally accept the evidence is sufficient, it'll be decades too late to do anything about it.
Following your reasoning then you are fine with RTE and media attributing EVERYTHING to Climate Change because, ya know, by the time your strongly held beliefs may be proven correct it'll all be too late.
Any chance we could get an apology for their disgraceful coverage of the pandemic too?

I'm sure in your head you are fighting a noble battle against climate change deniers here, but the reality is some of us are just fed up with every weather event being attributed to Climate change just to spin a narrative. I'm fully aware that climate change is happening, but here we have the head of News at the national broadcaster straight out saying that he will try harder to keep up that narrative at every opportunity. It may be for a good cause but he needs to just report the news because that's supposed to be his job.
Whatever happened to acid rain, seemed to die a death after we got out of the 80's.
a quick google suggests that current sulphur dioxide levels in europe are one sixth what they were at their peak around 1980, so that'd explain that.
You need to do more than a “quick Google” and link to a random gif in a Tweet order to disprove climate change.
There is overwhelming evidence for climate change, the problem is that accessing that evidence is too much of a challenge for the scientifically illiterate denizens of boards, who think everything can be explained by cartoons on Facebook and saying “sure we’ve always had weather(!).”
No actual real evidence will ever be good enough for them, and they wouldn’t “get it” anyway because they can barely read, and they’ll believe any auld shite that confirms their own prejudices so engaging with climate change deniers is just a massive waste of time.
Well since you put it like that, count me in!
Grand. let's dispense with the need for evidence collection because it is not needed.
It’s not needed because the overwhelming scientific consensus has observed that the climate is changing. The “prove it” merchants are just wasting everyone’s time by asking for evidence over and over again. And anyway I bet less than 1% of 1% of the people who use this site are scientifically literate enough to read any of the academic, peer reviewed papers proving it in any case, because nobody with any kind of real scientific background doesn’t believe that climate change is not real anymore. It’s like asking for proof that gravity exists.
In fact, in the spirit of discussion: when someone proves to me that gravity exists then I will prove that climate change exists. And before you suggest I lift something up and let it go: sure we’ve always had stuff fallin’ sure.
Too much or too little of anything now is climate change, you can't challenge something with the wide open definition that terminology gives. In my years on this earth I don't remember a single year where the weather followed a set expected temperature or rainfall for the year.
Newsflash.
The climate is always changing.
