England Lifts All Covid 19 Laws

From my knowledge so far only England has lifted all the Covid 19 laws and the wearing of masks or social distancing has become no longer required. This is not the case anywhere else in the UK and Ireland though. Seems like Boris Johnson was desperate to get some normality back.

Correct, yesterday was "freedom day" in England, ironically marked by the health secretary and Prime Minister in isolation due to being close contacts

There's two trains of thought here,

One is that there's another wave coming so bring it on now instead of later in the year and let it run it's through the population while the summer is upon us

Another is that a new variant is on its way and Johnson is playing with fire

Afaik the plan is let it run through the youth to achieve herd immunity since older age groups are vaccinated

It always comes down over the weekend, well 4 weekends out of the past 5 have had 3 days of reducing cases.

Going by specimen date you can see it's still heading up.

PCR positivity rate also rising, hospitalisation rising... Every sign is showing an increase.

England has a little over 10X the population of Ireland there so that's the equivalent of roughly 12,000 here! It might work out well for them and I hope it does but the scientists don't seem to think that it will, an NHS nurse was on with Pat Kenny yesterday saying they had to cancel some procedures because that particular hospitals ICU beds were at capacity

40k yesterday, 8k on the 19th of June, also 7 day average on 19th June was 7,600 while yesterday it was 41k so the figures could easily reach 120k in a few weeks time

That hearsay from the nurse is a bit odd (Newstalk and other media organs are very quick to give voice to hearsay when it fits a narrative but dismiss when it does not).

Did she state the percentage of ICU beds taken by Covid sufferers in the hospital? The story is really so often in what is omitted.

Yes of course, it's on Newstalk and it doesn't suit your narrative so it must be hearsay. I don't believe she gave figures, perhaps she didn't have them to hand as she was too busy calling patients cancelling their treatments but the segment is up as a podcast if you want to check it yourself

I'm still trying to find one single article from any news source at all that has a nurse or doctor from a hospital telling us "everything is fine" and we should reopen quicker... Don't suppose you've got one?

I am delighted for them. Covid is here to stay. All we can do is vaccinate people and live with it.

A lot of other countries have developed an almost stockholm syndrome like obsession with restrictions but we have to get on with our lives now.

You would swear that nobody died or hospitals were never overwhelmed before 2020.

What's the alternative when the other half of the population aren't going to get vaccinated? Transmissibility of Delta variant means it's pretty much inevitable that all those unvaccinated people are going to get infected at some point; more a question of when than if.

Nobody wants restrictions forever, and nor should there be, all the scientists and doctors are saying that it should happen just not at the moment while case numbers are clearly rising in a very worrying way.

Johnson thinks he can have the wave now and get it over and done with before schools go back in September so everything will be fine again then... He might be right, only time will tell

It's not "all the scientists and doctors". There's prominent members of both communities on either of the debate. May disagree with what Johnson is doing here, but he's not going off on one on his own here, there is scientific backing and modelling underpinning it.

Thats a misrepresentation since the UK hasn't actually completed their vaccination roll out yet, and many under 35s are not fully vaccinated yet. So it doens't really seem fair to those who want to be vaccinated.

David King, Chaand Nagpaul are 2 of the big ones I can think of who signed that letter in the lancet, and Chris Whitty and Patrick Vallance, didn't seem overly enthused by the idea either

Also notable that Scotland, Wales and NI aren't following suit despite having similar or better vaccination rates

No, nurses and doctors never really talked much about the virus before its existence, either good or bad, for a very obvious reason. In saying that I do recall chat shows this time last year after the first wave with medical professionals hailing the fact they could get back to working with chronic illness patients

In response to your second question, yes, it's definitely in a news organisations interest to publish such a story. News, good or bad, in a pandemic would get plenty of clicks. Just google COVID-19 vaccine and look at the number of news articles associated with studies on their efficacy, their approvals etc etc

I heard stories about vaccine deaths being higher than recorded. Will there be stories on that? If they want to interview a Czech doctor called Iveta Křížová they would have a lot to say on the matter.
