Economists agree that immigration has a net positive on the economy and this immigration is surely a wonderful thing for the county.

Actually that's not nearly so simple at all. Different populations can have positive and negative genes in the mix. Plus that assumes mixing occurs in the first place to the degree it affects the wider population. The general rule is that people end up having children with those most like them, whether that be educational standards, social class, culture and yes "race". In the US IIRC interracial couples make up around 10% of the population and within that that are differences and trends. EG there are more White and Asian couples than White and African American. Asian and African American is rarer again.

Some groups mix readily enough, others don't, even within their own populations. EG in some UK South Asian demographics they have higher genetic damage because of the culture of cousin marriages.

But again this "diverse gene pool" thing is another example of the exoticism angle as a positive in this political philosophy. The positives always come down to exoticism and charity, with a local flavour of "the Irish were immigrants once".

World fertility rates are crashing at an unprecedented rate. The overall fertility rate in sub-Saharan Africa is still huge but is falling there as well. The worldwide drop in the last decade is something to behold and hard to figure out exactly. From East Asia to India, the Middle East and the Americas we are seeing rapid declines.

I'm curious... you say that Wibbs keeps peddling this fact/opinion about the thread.. how many times has he done so? (Since peddling would suggest that he's bringing it up often)

As for the thread-ban list, I'm pretty sure the list was added well after the thread had started or wasn't updated much for a good while. There are names who were banned and aren't on the list, plus there's quite a few people who were banned but got their bans lifted (myself included). I wouldn't take that list as gospel for those who have been banned.

Not really. The Child limit wasn't seriously enforced since the 90s, especially in the countryside. You can find families all over China with 5 or 6 children grown to adulthood. I once had a student, in all honesty, tell me that she believed that women could get pregnant from pollen in the air, because that's what her grandmother had told her.

The Irish population has grown by 1.2 million in the last 20 years , it went from 3.7 million to 4.9 million since 2000 . We've a major housing crisis , health systems a shambles , overcrowded classrooms, we've limp wristed politicians who're letting foreign corporations/vulture funds rape the Irish people , also during the last recession we lost many hard working Irish people my age to immigration who've decided not to come home. Threadbanned users. If you're very bored - and lord knows you'd have to be very bored

- go through the thread and look for cards and forum bans(though a few posts ended up being deleted).

But OK let's take your position as it stands and say it's only a third that are pro-multicultural. What's the percentage of pro-multicultural posters on this thread? It's certainly not a third. The vast majority are anti to some degree. Even from your tally the pro side are still overrepresented.

Which is a pity as early on I really did expect a far more robust defence of the position. That for me has been the biggest surprise of all from this thread. Especially given it seems to be such an accepted and apparently obvious and promoted truth. Instead the overwhelming bulk of the pro multicultural defence has consisted of exoticism, charity, the Irish were migrants, a blanket "sure it's great isn't it" with precisely nada offered to back that up, wild claims that Ireland was always "multicultural" and a large dollop of nothing to see here, carry on. Then we have seen tangents hardly germane to the debate, the throwing around of the racist tag, all the way to attacking the posters not the posts.

In short; it's odd that for such a heartfelt truth that multiculturalism is such a positive, the antis have provided a more robust defence of their position and are less likely to run to deflection and insult. This may suggest it's not such a defensible positive after all. It would be my opinion that it became an accepted truth because of existing multicultural societies(mostly ex European colonies) trying to paper over the mess they found themselves in by painting it as a positive if we only worked harder at it.

As well as a possible environmental cuase that Klaz referenced, much of it is down to the world in general getting richer and women gaining equality in access to education and employment, but also more and more people are becoming time poor. We're settling down and having families at later ages, so you get fewer kids because the window is narrower and the costs are going up per child.

And that is the reason there is no robust defence.
Because people don't feel the need to, it is accepted and most people don't have any issue with multiculturalism. So, no need therefore to defend it.
The only people who feel so strongly are anti, so they need to point out what they see as negative points.

Ya, agreed with all that. I've been studying demographics for years, it's a fascinating topic and realistically one that is very hard to be perfectly accurate on. Some of the official Census Bureau of America's predictions just over a decade or so ago had America reaching 450 million by 2050/2060, there is a possibility now that they top out at 340/350 million.

The Middle East is another fascinating region and one that doesn't line up with most people's preconceptions.

Stories of low sperm counts are appearing now as well as a possible concern throughout the world

I hate posts like this more than anything. While I wouldn't rush to say that there's many people against immigration, you're quick to do the opposite. You've no way of knowing the support levels for immigration, yet you make these claims boldly, without evidence. It's not one bit rational, because you simply don't have any way to measure it accurately. On top of that, Ireland is in the early stages of the process, revolt, if there is any, won't happen for another ten years or so.
