What Whisky/Whiskey are we drinking this month?

I know there's a thread on recommending Whiskeys/Whiskys but there's none on general tasting as far as I can see.

Similar premise to the beer thread, but we'll say month instead of week as drinking a €50/60 bottle of Whiskey/Whisky a week is probably not a good idea...

I picked up a bottle of The Glenlivet Master Distillers Reserve on my travels recently. No age statement.

Not the most complex Whisky in the world. It's quite nice though, smooth and fruity, very strong taste of pears, and a tiny bit of spice. Drank with a splash of water.

Watching the Ireland game with a Suntory Toki (not very patriotic!), had one with ice and now in a highball (based on below review).
"A blended whisky from Suntory's three distilleries: Yamazaki, Hakushu and Chita. Toki has a different composition to another Suntory blend, Hibiki, as its main components are Hakashu single malt and Chita grain whisky."

More in a Scotch style than Irish, reminds me of Speysides and Jura I have tasted.

Very good review here - to summarise, it is very easy drinking, hints of spice, and gentle smoke but lacking a bit of 'heft'.
Really shines in a concentrated highball i.e. use some mixer but don't drown it - you will taste this difference from using this as a base versus a basic blend.

Puca (from the blackwater distillery) second batch is now in Aldi.

For €25 it’s a steal.

I’m assuming they had an oversupply of bottles from the first batch as it says “batch 1” on the bottles I bought.

Surely they couldn’t have been stupid enough to get a label number wrong in print.

To be honest if for some reason it is the first batch I don’t mind as it was lovely.

Edit, just noticed the bottle and cork is different to the first batch.

Came home from work to a nice surprise, the wife picked me up a bottle of Bushmills 16. I'm a whiskey novice but I've tried some fine whiskeys so far such as Redbreast 12 & 21, Blue spot and the single pot still sample pack from Irish Distiller's.... I think the Bushmills is my favourite so far, I'm tempted to pour a second!

On further inspection the bottles and corks are different but the label is the same.

Looks like a f uck up that nobody bothered proof reading the label before it was shipped. It should say batch 2. Not batch 1.

Not that it matters still lovely whiskey for the price.

Well considering blackwater distillery confirmed it was the 2nd batch to a mate of mine through Twitter I’d say I am in a position to know that.

You weren't being accused of lying, however, you are no more than some random person on the internet saying something.

You said "It should say batch 2. Not batch 1", but you also have the tweet to back it up, insert the confirming tweet at this point and we can all see it's blackwater distillery saying so and not the random internet person.

I was having a little drop at home the other night and got to thinking about what actually makes a nice whiskey?

I would often see super expensive whiskey for sale and wonder what it tastes like, as I'd never be buying it.

Then I got to thinking "surely price doesn't mean you'll necessarily like it". So perhaps I could blind taste an everyday, run of the mill €30 whiskey, and like it. Then blind taste a bottle of €1k whiskey and think its not as nice.

I would guess people might look at it technically, and argue about complex tastes, production, aging etc, but I guess it all comes down to personal taste.

Beyond a certain point taste preference is going to come into it.
But along the continuum of the style of the whiskey, the more expensive whiskey should have more depth, complexity, layers, length than than cheaper one.

If the expensive whiskey isn't in a style you like (too peated, too sherried or whatever) then you would prefer a €30 bottle of the style you do like.
But if it's a rough young blend even in the style you do like, then an expensive bottle of the style you don't like would still have some qualities you might pick up on in terms of length, smoothness etc that you can appreciate

I think same would apply with wine.

I may not be a whiskey connoisseur but I know what I like.

Starting to understand the flavour profiles etc but it takes time.

Good excuse to buy and try loads of different types of whiskey. Think I have about 40 in the press at the moment.

It’s the same with beer which I would like to think I’m quite knowledgable about.

There’s some ludicrously expensive beers that just aren’t worth the money in my opinion but someone will think they’re amazing.

For me with beer the more you spend is similar to whiskey, tends to be more flavour, better balanced and overall a better beer.

That said if you’re new to beer you won’t be able to handle a double ipa or imperial stout so the more expensive stuff is wasted on you. Better off getting a base level of flavours.

One of my favourite IPA’s at the moment is the Brown Bear Double IPA in Aldi. It’s only €2 a bottle and it’s 7.5%. A nice dank DIPA.

I’ve had DIPA’s double the price that weren’t as good so all about what you like I suppose but developing a palate to understand what you’re tasting.

A rabbit hole if ever there was one.
