I think it has been blown out of proportion. It’s bad but not as bad as they are making it out to be.

I don't even agree that it's bad. The reaction is absolutely awful, certainly. But the disease simply isn't that bad, and no amount of pretending will change that.

Define bad? When was there last a disease like it?

it is hard to know as to what alternative could be suggested. it can be argued it would have been exponentially worse if we did nothing remember how the numbers shot up over christmas and that was still a controlled loosening up of restrictions.

the reason it is not that bad is because a lot of us just stayed at home went to the shops once a week and did not meet anyone. So could not be infected
there were no pubs open there were few parties. that is why the numbers are not bad.

the idea of standing 2 metres from someone while talking to them and wearing a mask was completely strange to the population before this happened. but now it is normal there are reasons why it is not that bad

do you not remember the stories coming from Italy at the start of the pandemic? people were dying quickly their lungs absolutely ****ed it was young people as well

In Ireland at least, this whole thing has clearly been completely overblown. https://www.euromomo.eu/graphs-and-maps

Haven't been on boards in a while. Does anyone think that isn't the case?

Maybe you should stick with computer science instead of health science?

People have died of literally every disease ever known to man.

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,517 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

Government takes steps to mitigate a potential crisis - 'this was blown out of proportion'
Government doesn't do enough to mitigate a potential crisis. - 'They're absolutely hopeless.'

Government ministers make their own decisions - 'What the hell do they know about this?'
Government take guidance for appropriate experts - 'These unelected nerds are on a power trip'

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I'd say most of them at this point take criticism in one ear and out the other.

So what's your point? That's hardly evidence that this one is "bad".

Have you read your link there? Take us through your conclusion...

There is excess mortality cleary evident then, despite all our lockdowns and efforts.

    Have you misinterpreted the data?

Concerns about an excess mortality to date of 450,000 (and rising) are "completely overblown"?

That's a bizarre claim. You can't expect anybody to take it seriously if you just throw it out there and don't bother to explain how you can possibly think that, or make any argument in support of your views.

The mismanagement of cases in Bergamo (Lombardy) at the start of the pandemic was the primary driver of those scenes showing the overloaded hospital.
These video clips and subsequent deaths was a massive driver of the over the top reaction across Europe I believe.

What is totally ignored is that their neighbouring region of Piedmont had the same number of cases at the same time but one third the mortality rate, primarily because they didn't pack people with mild illness together into wards, they kept people at home as much as possible.

There is a high prevalence of private healthcare in Lombardy and this is suspected to have been a major factor in the outcomes there.

I'm firmly of the belief that the reaction to Covid has been the biggest breakdown of science and logic to date and all the data available supports this.

The lockdown is going to kill many multiples of what Covid has and have long lasting social and economic consequences for the Western world.

Lockdown was a nuclear option and it will be years before the full impact of it is quantifiable.

    Handled atrociously? Yes.

While the virus can be serious to those at risk, 100% it's been a nut with a sledgehammer approach how its been reacted to.

Time will tell and although hindsight is always 20/20 I suspect eventually the excessive lockdowns will be considered to have been a bad and costly error.

Yes OP, completely overblown. If we didn't overblow it, housing crisis would be probably sorted by now. And to hell with our useless healthcare anyway.

Over 9000 people hospitalised in Bulgaria. 750 in ICU. A country with population of 6.7 million.

Things also really grim in Hungary. ‘ worse than Italy last year’ https://hungarytoday.hu/hungary-death-rate-covid-deaths-coronavirus-healthcare/

This is what happens if virus gets out of control.

I can’t believe people still can’t grasp this simple concept.

Looking at the stats saying it doesn’t bad that bad.

The stats are the result of our whole country making huge sacrifices and changing everything about our way of life for the last year.

    The mind boggles

Then the gombeens, but it only really has a serious affect on a tiny percent of the population, eh no, not if the whole health service is brought to its knees, then it will have a serious affect on everyone, will all unrelated illnesses.

We really are ALL in this together

We're not all in this together.

Cancer resulted in over 3 times as many deaths as COVID last year.

Cancer healthcare services won't fully resume until the end of 2021.

That's just one of a multitude of non-COVID illnesses that are not being properly diagnosed and treated!

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/heal...plan-1.4517265

People who are able to work safely with no risk of COVID are being denied their right to work by a bunch of snivelling, ass-covering civil servants who are taking home 6 figure salaries.

So again, we're not all in this together. It's every person for themselves.

Plenty of threads where such claims can be discussed, including Relaxation of Restrictions which regularly covers this sort of sentiment
