Thats exactly what that activist blog you linked to does. It describes the left response as an "outpouring of sympathy" and then goes to lengths to call out the far right. Well what are bogeymen for? As usual the Right On import US notions and apply them universally as a tactic to quite different cultural setups. I nominated him just there myself. I didn’t mention anything about the incident per se but rather that he is a hard-working community servant out of work through no fault of his own and that he deserves to have a morale lift during this difficult time for him.

You're shifting the goal posts now. My post was in response to someone claiming it was a "black gang". It wasn't. Clearly the guy that attacked him is black. We know this. He is in prison. As for the accents, you can hear a guy with a Cork accent pleading with the attacker by name to stop.

Shortly after the incident the family moved from their 4 bed house to another part of Dublin by the councils.

And from my personal experience , when speaking to people/taxi drivers their attitudes change when they know you are one of "them".

The conversation changes quite quickly when they are disarmed and the "reverse" racism comes out.

I find it surprising how I can have one conversation and then a totally different conversation with the same person when my wife or friends are around.

Legally they're treated the same when it comes to discrimination, not that someone would be taken to court for than kind of thing. Personally I wouldn't be able to pick out a Nigerian name from a general African-sounding name.

That’s an interesting point. I’m not a racist and I have nothing against black people at all. But I don’t like Nigerians, much in the same way that I don’t like Parisians.

It is much the same as the behaviour of Trump in US. Portrayal of an event in a certain way causes the audience to behave accordingly. So the media whipping up racial tensions should be held to account equally.

To be fair, the Dublin Mayor Awards are a way for the community to democratically forward their gratitude and appreciation for whoever is the recipient in the end.
Because it's democratic and requires people to engage and provide their vote, then the result should also demonstrate to organisers what kind of community is around them and what the community espouses and would like to see.

With that in mind, I'm not surprised the likely winners are going to be the EUROSPAR store manager and the ASU of the Gardai.

It should be sufficient also to remind public figures that the community are not stupid and that by just providing them with a little support publically, there are plenty of reciprocal votes.

What are they afraid of.

Not living in Dublin but just wanted to ask, is the Dublin mayor elected by vote of the people or whoever controls the council?
